Viral Labyrinthitis - New!

Posted , 6 users are following.

Hi I've been diagnosed with viral labyrinthitis. I've had it for 11 days, I hate it! How long will this last? The doctor gave be stemetil (prochlorperazine) which I have started this morning. How quickly does this work? Desperate! Thanks.

    Hi

Everyone is different....but it can last a long time. You will have to be patient and wait it out.

Looks like that is an anti-nausea medicine.  What are all your symptoms?  Too many questions to be answered with varying degrees of this illness/injury to the vestibular nerve(s). I've been dealing with this for over 14 months having had a serious attack that put me in the hospital.

Hi David, I feel lightheaded and I can't stay upright for long..I was very nauseous but I think the medication is helping. Not much appetite and just so tired! I'm also sometimes getting headaches and pain between my eyes, my eyes can feel like stones then. Thanks for replying!

      Hi

I highly recommend vestibular rehab ASAP. I am on my 3rd month but feel much better now that i've been doing these exercises.

The Stemitil is for the nausea. As for the rest of this vile condition, as my specialist said to me, 'It lasts as long as it lasts. Everyone is different.' Helpful, no? But that's what I live with, every day for the last 15 months. Now I just take one day at a time. No nausea but constant light headed ness and imbalance, but what the heck, one day I might feel normal again. Who knows. Just hang on in there. Could be worsesmile

Wow you have found us in such a short space of time - I found us a madness of 4 months - no time of your illness is predicted and if it does continue seek a balance specialist - the drug your on  I had for about 3 months dealt with nausea and vertigo! However I tend to switch back to this drug and not really giving any reasoning as I was put on serc as stermile was a heavier drug ( ho hum just another day)!

Thanks everyone, oh I'm so disheartened. I'm pretty much bed bound by it. I'm assuming it gets easier to live with if it does persist? I can't stay in bed for months! sad

Hi All well I'm still suffering, three weeks today since it started. I started Stemetil a couple of weeks ago and I think it helped, felt a bit better so stopped it, now feel awful again. Dizzy, nauseous.

I saw a private ENT consultant last week who diagnosed labyrinthitis and said the average length of time for this is 3-4 months. But it will gradually get better.

I'm going for an MRI on Wedbesday, hope that will be ok!

Trying to walk 15-30 minutes each day just to get out!

Anyway it totally ruined Christmas sad
