Vision

I am so frustrated with my close-up vision. I wonder if other people on prednisone are having problems with their close-up vision to. My vision has gotten so bad that I can only see up close for about 5 to maybe 10 minutes before my eyes start to blur. I have been treating for dry eyes and my eye doctor and ophthalmologist say they are good now and I'm continually using Restasis and drops. So I don't think it's dry eye causing the problem I really think it's the prednisone. I just came from the eye doctor yesterday and he checked my vision once again and my vision is fine when I'm in there because I haven't been reading for a while. So it's not my prescription for my glasses. I'm really at a loss and I am so frustrated because I can't read. . My eye doctor doesn't seem to have any answers for me either. I was hoping I might get some from this group.

My husband is lol saying this sounds like you. For me and most of us it is a side effect of the prednisone. As my ophthalmologists says my perscription will never be perfect. I can blink wnd be blured to blink and some vision.

I find the drops for dry eyes really help but still not like before. I'm trying to read a 900 pg book and it's frustrating. Our new reality.

I get my eyes checked now every 3mos it was 6mos.

My eyesight deteriorated about 10 months ago. Eye Dr diagnosed quick onset cataracts due to pred. Fortunately eyes did not continue to deteriorate so rapidly as in the beginning, as I had to wait months for operations. I had them both done a week apart in Jan. After 1st op, sight was perfect for a week in that eye. After 2nd op, 1st eye deteriorated and 2nd was not so good, but still better than with cataracts. I had to use two types of drops for 3 months. A couple of problems improved and now I only need dry eye drops sometimes. I did get new prescrition glasses finally last week ( only minor tho for up close and distant). I can now read again for more than 10 mins at a time. Such a relief after 10 months.

Again Im having exact same problem, watery eyes continuously and can only read for a few minutes before my eyes ache and get tired. I do wear glasses and have a small cataract but never had these problems with the eyes before I began the prednisone 15 months ago. I do notice however that once I reached the 5 mil of pred the watering slwoed down and seems to be better but now that I upped it today to 6 I hope it doesnt get worse. I dont know what we can do if it is the pred so maybe someone here can advise us.

If you have watering eyes it is a sign you may have dry eyes - yes, I know, doesn't make sense! And dry eyes can cause these sort of problems.

Tears should be viscous, thick, to be able to keep the surface of the eyes healthy. If for some reason your tears are not being produced properly your eyes will produce large amounts of thin tears in an attempt to replace the good quality ones.

It isn't uncommon in autoimmune disorders - and other people have said it happened to them on pred.

No it really doesn't make sense does it Eileen. Yes I suffer terribly from dry eye syndrome. I've even had my lower tear ducts plugged to help the situation and I use Restasis twice a day. I also use eye drops in addition and I also take omega-3 because that helps as well. And they tell me right now my dry eye situation is under control. So all that being said I'm pretty confident my vision is prednisone related rather than dry eye related. In fact for the longest time I was blaming it on my dry eye situation and then realized it was probably not my dry eyes. In fact since I have dry eyes and dry mouth I got tested for Sjogren's syndrome but it came up negative so I just have dry mouth because of all the medication I'm on. But thank you for the idea

There are ways of managing it fairly well if it is something that bothers you - and anyway to protect your eyes better.
