Vision can take months to settle after cataract surgery

Posted , 6 users are following.

I am posting this in case it helps others. It's been 4 months since my LE cataract surgery. At one month I was measured at plano. At two months, I was measured at +.25. At 3 months I was still +.25. At 4 months, I am now at +.5 -.25. Note that my current measurement was done twice just a few days apart so I think it's quite accurate.

Hi Deb - not sure if it is because

of IOL settling. Vision can vary depending on how much sleep you had night before, lighting, whether you were tested in morning afternoon or evening. Even those with their natural lens will see fluctuations.

Takes full 6 weeks with uncomplicated surgery for eye to heal and up to 6 months for settling to occur where eye is totally shrink wrapped so to speak. Major reason why exchanges encouraged before 6 months. Brain however may take longer to adapt - if it ever stops adapting.

Given that the number of tests I've had, I still think it's the IOL settling or something else with my eye. I've had 8 readings over the last 4 months and it has been consistent in its progression from plano to +.5. Additionally, since I have monofocal IOLs, I've noticed the loss of intermediate vision over time. Since many of us, myself included, have their cataract surgeries fairly close together, it's something to keep in mind. After my first surgeries, my optometrist suggested I wait 4 weeks for an eyeglass prescription. Now she says wait 4 months. 😃

im wondering why you had so many tests? Traditionally 1 week after , 1 month after and then 3 months after unless there is an issue . was this combining the 2 surgeries and being dilated each time that gave you so much testing? (8 visits per 2 eyes?)

Good question! After my surgery, I encountered postive dysphotopsia and have had a lens exchange in my RE. When I see either my ophthalmologist or my optometrist, they test both eyes. I have my LE exchange coming up next month. I look forward to the day when I will just have annual visits. It is very stressful going through all of this.

Wow, 6 months to be fully gift wrapped for Christmas!!!!

By the time wife goes back to her fitness job it would have been....

      Left eye- 7 weeks break

      Right eye- 3 weeks break

She will start slow. So if she was lifting 25kg during Bodypump class, she will lift just the bar with 2kg on each side. Just so that she can instruct her class.

We will obviously get the OK from the surgeon first.

It is so strange, we have trained 12 hrs per week for years and by the time we go back it would have been ZERO fitness for 2 months lol

I could have gone to train but I am too loyal and only go to my wife's classes plus showing solidarity 😃

Also good way to reset the body, unfortunately lack of gym is making my body ache lol

      Quite the process isn't it?

Topic of resuming your normal activities within a week or 2 (on OK by surgeon) comes up on the forums. Many of us including myself feel that the surgeons usually deal with much older patients whose normal activities would be quite different from that of your wife. She is likely itching to get back to her normal life and fitness I bet but no doubt easing into it would be best in long run.

    What is "plano"?

Do the numbers mean your eyesight is improving? What do the numbers mean?

Plano is 0 or 20/20 distance vision. So my numbers have not been improving. I've been getting more farsighted.

Richard, anything over plano means waste of range. Which is why some surgeons don't target plano, they target slightly under. It's a fine line as you can end up going too under too. I guess that is still better than going over I guess.

For example we will be targeting -0.25 in the far eye but it can end up at plano/0 or +0.25 or -0.75
