Has any one taken Amitriptyline with pred please.

Had a call from doctors had to go for some medictaion, the above as the rhymi had written to my doctors.

Not ruled out pmr or gca now, but want me to reduce as much as i can with causing too much pain, gone from 10mg to 6.5mg (for the next 2 weeks) then if iam ok start reducing to 6mg from 6.5mg.(if this makes sense),

The doctor said the reason they  are trying this is because of the temporal pains, etc i have been having, as they want to make sure it is not the nerves that is causing this.

The doctor also said if she has any doubts she should arrange a temporal  bi-opsey for me.

We all i can say is i think i  am lucky that they are trying to sort me out, but i wish they could sort out my feet and the inflammation i am having.

Still i know i am lucky compared to some of you.

Best wishes, Mags

I tried it for 10 days just at night to see if I could get a better nights sleep. Pain was disrupting my sleep an awful lol.

It did help me get a few extra hours but I started going into urinary retention so I stopped it. I have suffered urinary retention in the past on different drugs so I am not suggesting it would happen to you. Just giving the reason as to why I stopped it.

I did feel it improves my pain levels slightly. Not sure if it was pain relief or better sleep allowing me to rest more? I would have stayed in it if not for the water works problem. Good luck with everything x

I was told to take Ametriptyline by the GP to help my orignal pain and to help me sleep.  Didn't help me at all.  My rheumy suggested Nytol from Boots which works fine, 25mg or 50 mg for a good night.  Didn't want to start taking anything dangerous on perscription and 25mg suits me fine. I am pain free at night on pred.

I started with 10mg and was told I could go up to 30mg.  Tried 20mg but this gave me a very dry mouth and I stopped it at once.

I was taking it prior to Diagnosis but stopped when I started on Pred. My rhuemy told me that I can take it if nessesary but haven't yet, although if it helps me get a decent nights kip I might soon.

Hi Margaret. I have actually taken amytriptyline for the prevention of migraines for years. I take 20mg at night. I know it is also used for chronic pain as well and when I was in such horrible pain and before I was diagnosed with the PMR my GP increased my dose to 30mg to see if it would help. I didn't see any effect on my pain level at the time. Since my PMR diagnosis I am on Prednisone but still take 20 mg Amitriptyline. It does cause dry mouth but also is good in aiding sleep. It was not effective in treating the pain of PMR for me.

And didn't work for pain or sleeping for me. It's a mild antidepressant  and relaxant.   We all respond differently to meds.

It is also prescribed for people with Fibromyalgia (like me, with PMr also) nerve pain and help with sleep....  Couldn`t tolerate it myself....but good luck and hope it helps!
