visual snow and tinnitus

I've been seeing really really tiny dots (?) not really sure how to explain it but its like there are millions of them everywhere and you cant really identify just one dot. It's white when i see black or when it's dark and it's a dark colour when i see white (like white walls, or other light coloured objects). I've done some searching and I think I do have visual snow, and it's really depressing for me because I've already experienced the horrors of tinnitus and now I'll have to go through visual snow too? I'm a very cautious person and I tend to worry too much when it comes to anything really and having these kind of health problems is really taking its toll on me. I never feel like eating and all i really want to do is curl up in bed and cry. What if one day I end up blind and deaf? There are no treatments or cures for these conditons and little knowledge on what even caused it in the first place. I'm only 13 years old and I feel like my whole life is going to be such a drag because I can't even read things properly without getting so mad at myself for not being able to concentrate on the words (my vision makes it hard for me to do so). I have tried searching things up about visual snow but I've only found that I only get more scared as I read these things. No known cause, no treatment, NO CURE, nothing. I feel like nothing has a solid answer (its always maybe its that, maybe its not) and I'm just going to end up killing myself in the near future because even though i can't notice the ringing or the millions of dots most of the time during the day, i can still hear it everytime I lay down in bed and that really scares me. I'm always okay and then not okay. I don't know if I'll ever "get used" to these things or if I'll ever be mentally stable because it doesn't seem that way right now. However, I am quite lucky for my condition to not be as serious as many other sufferers and I am very, very thankful for that. But I don't know if being grateful is ever going to be enough.

Can anyone please help me or give me some advice?I really don't want to die because I love my family and my friends but I feel like one day I will kill myself because somedays I just get so tired of the constant non-stop ringing in my ears and the dots that i see everywhere, all the time (even when I close my eyes). It's just really scary and I really would appreciate some advice or news on researchers working on finding the treatment or atleast some interest in trying to understand these conditions.

Thank you to those who took the time to read this and please do answer if you have absolutely anything you know about visual snow or tinnitus.

    Hello everyone,

    Just a brief update:

I have had the ear test today and she said my hearing was fine and that there was no pressure on my ear drums. She said everything was fine with my ears and all we can really do now is wait, and if I am still worried, I can get my doctor to refer me to a specialist. She told me it usually takes around 3-6 months before the ringing goes away after a flu so I don't really know how to feel about this. What if it doesn't go away after 3-6 months?? But I guess it is getting better as it's not as loud as it was 2 months ago. She also said there was some fluid (although not a severe amount of fluid) in my left ear but I feel like the ringing is louder in my right ear?? I'm not sure, I guess I'll just have to wait for the time being. My mum also brought me to the optometrists today and I have an appointment booked for tomorrow at 4:30pm. Also, I do dancing and it's been a passion of mine since I could even remember. I'm just concerned about the performances I'm going to have to do and the dance practices with the REALLY loud music that my teacher turns up during every class. (It's only one class a week, one hour, although dance performances go on for longer) Should I buy transparent ear plugs?? I'm just really scared the ringing will be permanent if I continue to let my ears be exposed to such loud music although I don't want to quit dancing just because of that.

You did not tell us that you are exposed to loud noise.

      TINNITUS.

      Thi is not nice.

?Are you prepared to tolerate tinnitus for the rest of our life to pursue your passion for dancing?

I know what my answer would be.

      FLUID IN THE EAR.

?Who did your hearing test today? Wsas it a dr? I suspect no becuse nio d would hve said what was said to you.

It is NOT usual to get fluid in the ear following flu/

The point is that you are not seeing the right people.

?You need to see an ear, nose and throat specialist for the tinnitus and fluid in your ear. Of course any luid in th ear will cause pressure. It should not be there. fdid this person take  a swab to check for any infection? Did this expert bother to t refer you to a specialist?

Please take note of what you know should be done.

      I would aevise the following.

      1. Get a copy of your audiometry test to see if you have any NIHL.

      2. Get an urgent appointment o see a dr about the 'fluid' in your ear.

      3. Get an appointment with an ophthalmologist for an expert eye examination .Alternatively go to casualty eye department.

Obviously you need to wearhearing protection. You still require it with tinnitus or deafness. You need to take this seriously.

Noise Induced Loss of Hearing is oermanent damage to the hearing beause the nerve is damaged. Don't let it happen to yourself.

      Hello again delirious,

With the dancing, I don't know. I really really really love dancing and performing and I don't want to ever give that up. Do I really have to choose between dancing and tinnitus?? Would it be okay if I wore earplugs during performances and classes?? I would just like to know because dancing is something I really do not want to give up. I've been asking my parents to send me to a dance class since 4 years ago and I'm finally in one, and I love it. I don't know though, right now, there is a new low humming in my right ear, and it's probably from the dance class yesterday. Do you think this low humming will go away soon?? I've read that exposure to loud noise usually goes away in a few hours. I just woke up with the sound, so I'm not sure.

The expert I saw did say if I wanted to go to a specialist, I could get my doctor to refer me to one. I'm going to ask my mum if she can get me to see one soon. My ears are really scaring me but dancing and music are what make me happy. I don't know, it's a hard decision.

      Hello again Christine

The body is an amazing structure with terrific healing power. One has to keeppositive however if it was myself or my son who was suffering from tinnitus especially following exposure to loud noise then as hard as itsounds I would have to advise that they keep away from any noise for a while to see if the tinnitus clears up.

However the decision has to be yours and yours alone.

      OPTIONS.

Is it possible to dance with a quieter musical background I wonder?

Have you told your dance teacher about your tinnitis?

I think you need to consider these points and to discuss them with your teache and parents as well as ear, nose and throat specialist and perhaps not go to dancing class for a while in order t see if our signs and symptoms disappear or improve.

Please try to talk to your parents .

      Please keep thinking positively.

      Hope the above helps.

      Take care.

Hello, Thank you so much again for replying to me.

Nope, I have not told my teacher about my tinnitus. I've always been very shy and I can't really open up to people easily. I have a new teacher and hes in about his 19-20's? He's in a dance crew so it seems like he is used to the loud music. Maybe I will try to talk to him so that I can still pursue my passion without having to live with severe tinnitus.

Do you think wearing ear plugs will be okay though? I'll ask my parents if I can see an ear, nose and throat specialist and see what they have to say about it.

I think you should abstain from any contact with loud noise. Also need to see and ENT specialist.

It is hard to advise without seeing your medical history as well as hearing/audiometry test results.

The fluid in the ear needs sorting out. Who did the audiometry test?

How did the prson who did the test know there was fluid in your ear?

I still think that you should be seen and examined by an ENT specialist and a neurologist/opthalmologist about the visual snow. If it were me I would not hesiate.

I am unsure as to why you are unable to go to A and E or ER and take the letter that you sent here which was very explanatory and well written with you .

      Hello delirious,

The person who did my audiometry test was some woman near the hospital in a hearing facility place (not really sure what they're called, but they do ear tests and have hearing aids and stuff), I'm not actually sure how she knew there was fluid in my left ear because all she told me was that there was fluid in there and it'll go away in a couple months time.

My left ear has been ringing louder than ever nowadays though, although it could be from stress. I'm going to ask my parents to take me to an ear specialist after we go to the doctors to get referred to one soon. I hope they won't freak out on me again.

I also had an eye test yesterday and the person said I had 20/20 vision. I don't think visual snow has to do with vision though so I think I should go see a neurologist or something soon. She mentioned that it could be a migraine but I don't think it is. I did have a few headaches here and there but I don't feel anything anymore and the millions of dots are still there.

christine ARE YOU IN THE us/ I ask because i get the impresson thqt yu are having to pqay for your medical care etc. IMHO the woman in the hearing place does not sound as though she knows what she is taking about .

Youmuwt not rely on these so called experts. You really do ned to be seen by an ear nose and throat specialist or at the very least by a doctor in general practice.

I would defintely go and see your dr. You can tell him or her what the lady at the hearing test cntre said about you having fluid in tour ear and tell the d that she told you to go and see a dr!!

ou Chrsitine you have to fiht fire with fire if you follow my menaing.

I am concerned that you seem to have to lead the way at home. I am not here to cause a rift between you and your parents but it concerns me that you make constant reference to having to ask their permission to see a dr when in actual fact it is your right to do so. Children which is what you are classed as at the moment have their rights. it says so in the Childrens Human Rights Act.

You must get someone to examine and assess your ear porperly. It is simply not good enough for an amateur who is not even medically qualified to fob you off by saying that your hearing is okay but that you hve fluid in your ear. How does that person know? You must keep asking youself that question and get it sorted.

You also need to establish the cause of the visual snow. I do not understand why someone has not ordered an MRI scan of your head etc.

When u say that u hope that they don't freak out on you again  who are you referring to? If it is the dr go to another one. If it is tour parents then go to a dr on your own. The ball is in oyur court. It is your health at stake not your parents.

Can't you go to social services about the obvious neglect of a child?

      Hello delirious,

I'm not sure how to go to the doctors by myself because we live quite far from one and what do I do when I get there?? Don't I have to book for an appointment first?? I'm not really sure on what to do once I get there, or how to get there, or what to say. I'm not a very good speaker. Maybe I could email a specialist? But I don't know who and if they are actual specialists or not as the internet is a risky place.

My parents are hard people to understand. It's hard to suggest things because they've already had bad experiences and tough times so I don't want to further aggravate them or stress them out. It's really my own fault but I can't really do anything without my parents getting stressed out and then it just makes things so much worse in my family. I remember my sister having a serious health issue (regarding her mental health) and my parents could not understand why she was being like that until after she recovered (which was about a year and a half later). I highly suspect they won't understand how it feels to have tinnitus either, so I don't bother trying.

I definitely want to get some help however, but I don't know if seeing a doctor on my own is possible. Do you have any people I could perhaps email?? I read an article on a man with severe tinnitus who emailed a specialist his brain scans and was able to be treated. I don't think mine is quite serious but there is a new ringing (as said before) in my right ear now that's a lot louder and consistent especially at night. Yesterday night was a nightmare, I cried so much my right ear was so loud and consistent (before that it was softer and stopped once in a while) and hearing that made me cry even more. It's a vicious cycle of stressing and stressing more because of what your stress is causing.
