Vit d deficiency

I have recently been made aware that I am vit d deficient , following feeling extremely rough for a considerable period of time .

Symptoms have included:

severe pain in my shoulders , elbows ,hips

loss of muscle strength

poor coordination , very wobbly at times

exessive sweats

fluctuating body temperature - sudden change from comfortable to freezing or the other extreme excessive Heat !!

extreme tiredness

lethargy..... To name a few

I have found this forum really informative ,and reassuring hearing that with vit d supplements a lot of writers have noticed a big difference in their symptoms.

my quesion is once diagnosed as vit d defficient is this something that is prone to drop in the future ?or following a course of supplements does your own immune system usually maintain its levels ?

Would love to hear from anyone who has a bit more knowledge than me

Wow, this thread just serves to underline the depth of problems associated with vit d deficiency , when we assume that people in the western world generally  no longer need to suffer such deficiencies. I my self have thyroid issues and M.E  , the symptoms described are similar to those I have suffered for almost 20 years, I am now 60. I moved to Spain five years ago because I was toil that as I got older and arthritis progressed, I would be better off in a warm climate. It's also. Low humidity where I live in the mountains and I have been. Significantly better since the move. I obviously get a lot more hours of sunshine but am not over eosed as I found that bright light is not so inviting to me since the onset of M.E.  I am beginning to wonder if  maybe I have had acute vit d shortage all along as I was never tested for m.e. To my knowledge, it was just what doctor came up with after I had been passed around various specialists.  My diet is as near perfect as you could get with an abundance of fresh organic  produce, I have lost three stone just from eating healthily rather than following a weight reducing diet.  I don't take any supplements  as analysis of my diet suggests I have sufficient of all micronutrients  but maybe I should try. My Spanish doctor looked blankly at me when I suggested that maybe I should have a bit d test so I a, going to go and have one done at the private clinic to put my mind at rest, I mirror so many symptoms mentioned here and have felt for some time that I was just abandoned when I could not be easily diagnosed  , it was simpler possibly to label it m.e. And pension me off.

Anaside, apparently vegans do take a supplement of vit d, there are even special vegan supplements available.

      Hi chris

awful to hear that you have been suffering for so many years sad

I would too go and pay to have my bloods done , just to rule it out (or in which ever the case may be).

I myself was very ignorant regarding the extreme effects of low vit d until I noticed this site .

I was amazed that so many others had or were experiencing the same symptoms as me .

i am seeing a rheumatologist at 4 as my symptoms have increased over the past week since commencing the vit d supplement !!! May just be coincidental .

let me know how you go

Hi I was in pain for a long time joints lower back tired kept going back to the doctors I have had a lot of problems with my blood count for iron so I think they put it down to that and I am on Thyroxin for an underactive Thyroid one doctor said it could be low vit D and she was right and I am on my third lot of vit D so I will after this course take regular supliments for both iron and vit D its more of a lifestyle change that I have to make I have bought a Nutribullet processor to do healthy drinks I am hoping this will make a difference for the iron but do not think there is a food suppliment for vit D not one that will give you the amount you would need daily

    Hi Helene,

I know this is way into the future now, but how are your symptoms? I was recently diagnosed with Vit D deficiency and I've been experiencing muscle weakness in my arms and legs, and leg pain. They prescribed me 50,000 IU per month and I too was also concerned that there could be some sort of underlying condition. Thanks for sharing!
