Vitamin C Treatment (Detailed Experience With BV)

Hello all,
BV has been a terrible issue I've been dealing with on and off for the last 3 years and I've come to notice how much of a common issue it is for many females. I'm going to share my experience with BV in detail in hopes to provide a fellow female with a remedy.
The first time I got BV was in 2016 due to unprotected sex with my boyfriend of the time. About 2 weeks after, I noticed a white, runny discharge with an unusual odour. I figured because I had recently had sex for the first time without a condom that my body was adjusting and that it would go back to normal, but it continued this way on and off for months. I got treated with Metronidazole pills and I felt better.
In 2017 I had met someone new and after a few months we started to have sex. Whenever we used lube, within 24 hours I'd start to have symptoms of a yeast infection. I never treated the yeast infections because they were minor and would go away when the lube wasn't used. I then limited the use of the lube but the yeast was slowly building up and I developed BV once again, 3 months into my new sex life. The smell of the BV was fishy and much more stronger after sex. It was evident and embarrassing. I got treated again with the Metronidazole pills on the same 7 day treatment- 2 pills twice a day. Everything was perfect once I got treated. We continued with the sex again and were using condoms even with the lube and everything was still normal. Once the BV was certain to be gone we started trying unprotected sex. It was going well for a few weeks until I got BV a second time- third time total. I decided I was going to look for natural home remedies to help fix this BV from coming back.
I came across some popular ones and tried them everytime I had the runny discharge or noticed the fishy smell. The first remedy I attempted was the Acidophilus pills as a douche. I opened the capsules and made a sprayable paste but it didn't work. It gave me a yeast infection. The second remedy I tired was the tampon in the hydrogen peroxide with olive oil and that didn't work either. It burned my vagina soo bad I had to take it out. The last remedy I tried was a few drops of tea tree oil on a panty liner to be worn for a few hours everyday which I was already wearing everyday to capture the discharge. When it dried, that's when it smelled the worse and I found that the tea tree did help, especially on the days I had sex. On some days, you would be able to smell it through my clothes and sometimes the discharge would even be soo much that it would leak through my pants/tights. It came to a point where I had to totally up my hygiene. I increased the amount of showers I took daily and made sure to shower immediately before and after sex to rid of body fluids and germs. I always use plain ivory bar soap with a new wash cloth each time I take a shower. I was eating alot of yogurt and drinking only water. After a while the BV seemed to go away and we stuck to condoms for a year.
No BV all 2018 but in March 2019 I was hit with the most wretched yeast infection I've ever experienced. After a year of condoms we decided to have unprotected sex again and that triggered everything without delay. My vagina was dry for several days before an impact of yeast developed. After the yeast, of course the BV set in. In April 2019 I tried those CanesBalance Lactic Acid inserts from the pharmacy but the only thing they helped with was the smell. It gave me yeast but I was still taking them just to feel comfortable throughout my days. They were the only things that were helping me to feel clean. In May, I ended up going to my doctor and filling a prescription for a Metronidazole vaginal gel treatment for 5 days. I took the medication and it worked but after a week, I had a load of yeast inside. Soo much yeast that I could literally push it out of my vagina into my hand. It looked like clumpy lotion. Yeast and metro gel combined. I went back to my doctor in June and she prescribed the 7 day Metronidazole treatment with a gel treatment to be used twice a week for 6 months. I also had to take an oral one time yeast treatment as well as a 3 night ovule insert. The yeast cleared and the BV cleared as well. In July I waited 3 weeks to have sex. When I finally had sex, I received oral and the condom broke leaving me with a faint smell days later. Talk about suuuuuper stress
It is now August 2019. A month since the faint smell. It did indeed turn into BV. Classic runny white discharge with the fishy smell. I just got treated with the Metronidazole in June and I've come to realize that it only works temporarily. You feel super brand new but it doesn't last. I didn't fill my prescription--the twice weekly vaginal gel. I've done plenty research over the last month and I've learned about the biofilm that develops from the Bacteria. The biofilm needs to be penetrated to completely cure the issue. This is when I seen the Vitamin C remedy and decided to try it. As of Tuesday night, August 20th, Ive taken 1 Vitamin C 1000mg orally and 1 inserted. I woke up on Wednesday and did the same thing- insertion at night. Today, Thursday, I have done the same thing. I'm thinking to keep my insertion at 1 time nightly for 3 days since I'm using 1000mg instead of the suggested 250mg for 6 days. The pill is vegetable base coated. I bought it at a health food store. I have bought organic plain Greek yogurt, Oikos brand, from the grocery store. I'm drinking green tea-no caffeine, only water and have been taking a probiotic but I feel like it's too general to help provide to my vaginal health so I will be looking more into a Reuteri and Rhamosus based product.
The first day after insertion of the Vitamin C, the fishy smell and discharge was completely gone. There is leakage of a clear watery substance with no smell. The second night of insertion, I pushed the pill further than I did the night before. I felt some discharge and I positioned the pill in it. My finger when removed, had a white residue- no smell. Tonight, during insertion, I will push the pill as far as I can while searching for any discharge that hasn't been in contact with the vitamin C. I don't want to overdue the Vitamin C so after tonight I will continue with just 1 pill orally, one time a day. I will monitor how my body has utilized the Vitamin C. I currently have no smelly discharge, my vagina looks good on the outside and inside as far as I can see. Within the first 24 hours of inserting the pill I automatically felt better. BV is the worst thing we have to deal with as females for something which is not considered to be a disease or anything detrimental. I just pray this works overall and that I can finally return to having a healthy sex life and a comfortable life as a female in general.
Saliva, semen, lube and sometimes my period are my triggers. They irritate my vagina and bring on a yeast infection which alters my Ph and causes BV. I noticed that I've been yeasty after my periods so I will be using the Vitamin C inserts after my next period to test if it works for that as well or if I'd have to take a yeast treatment each time. I also drank alot of beer in July which makes sense as to why I got the last infection. The last period I had smelled way more fresher than the times when I had BV. That was another sign that the BV was silently lingering. I pray this treatment works and I will post the results. I decided to post my experience because the forums I was reading were from years ago or no updates were given. I hope my details were helpful in helping you compare and track your triggers as well. Take care and keep researching with patience to find something that works for you. We need to find a remedy to end this cursed journey.

Hi. Same here, tried all the stuff you've tried, including Vitamin C. It increases the acidity of your vag, which knocks down the BV, but it will allow for the rise of the yeast again. So get ready. The yeast is coming. Orally taken Vit. C will not fix the BV and inserting it will bring the yeast and the BV will come back when you stop the Vit. C which you will have to do because of the yeast. It's not a long-term fix. It's ok if you are experiencing BV symptoms and just need to gone for a day because it's a special day (you're gonna have some romance), but it definitely won't fix it. Here's what's worked for me (I've being dealing with BV for years and have finally had about 10 months of relief):
Get treated with the metro gel. Also get the pill you took for yeast (one should be enough). Once you're done with the metro gel, start inserting boric acid suppositories 2-3 times per week (it will give you a little leakage so do it at night). You should also start drinking about 5 ounces of kombucha per day (it has good bacteria). The boric acid keeps the biofilm from being able to infect you again. But you can't stop. You pretty much have to keep doing this. You may eventually be to reduce the boric acid to once per week, but if you stop, the BV will probably be back eventually. You can get the boric acid cheap on Amazon. This is what finally worked for me after seeing a gynecologist who is a vaginal infection specialist. The only times I've ever had any problems after starting these actions is when I got forgetful or I thought I was cured and could stop the boric acid.
It's a constant battle, but you can fix it. And don't believe any of the homeopathic stuff you've read. Like you've already found out, the tea tree oil, yogurt, vitamin C, hydrogen peroxide, probiotic pills, etc. don't work. They're maybe temporary fixes, at best. Good luck.

Sigh, makes me sad. Yeah if this doesn't work I'll just stick to the metro gel twice weekly for 6 months. I'm soo done with BV. Thanks for your reply!

So your gyn who specializes in infections basically told you that you will have to do a boric acid suppository at least once a week for the rest of your life? im not arguing..im just curious about the long term effects of boric acid on the vagina... 😦...i tried using it long term (21 days straight) after metro gel in order to eradicate the bv bit after about two weeks..it burned horribly.

It shouldn't be used that often. I think the bottle says not more than three times per week. All I know is this is the only thing that has worked long term. It doesn't give me any burning or anything. The alternative is what has us all here in the first place.

I understand what both of you are saying. That's the thing, not everything works for everyone that's why I've listed all my trials soo extensively to give an idea of what's not working for me. There has to be a time in which the boric acid should be fine without use though. Because if not, does that mean those with chronic BV are cursed for life? Lol

Don't you feel that way now? People post all kinds of weird stuff here (yogurt soaked tampons, tea tree oil baths, etc) and talk about how they have had no symptoms for a few days. I would bet they have not stayed symptom free. The treatment I spoke of (all of it, not just the boric acid alone) has kept me symptom free for ten months, after sex, after having my period, etc. Vitamin C will not do that for you, maybe if you also treat for yeast at the same time and use boric acid regularly after that but who knows. Again, good luck.

Yes, I'm scared but that's good you're honest. If you are going to try it please let me know how it goes. It seems to be the remedy that people say works best. I got the vitamin c pills from a health food store. All products are natural. The coating on the pill is a vegetable base

Okay, I live in Canada. I'm not certain how I can come in contact with boric acid over here but I'll find it when necessary.
Thats expensive for only ten pills, I think. But yes, the pills are just vitamin c alone. Ascorbic acid. Standard, but because it's from a natural health food store, every product is considered to be more healthier and safer. Even the material of the capsule is vegetable based compared to the silicon based ones the internet has mentioned. Everything dissolves naturally I do not have excess material coming out of my vagina.
