Vitamin D

I have opened a new thread with this posting, but would refer new readers to the post headed [b:5a87ca9228]At MrsK's request - ask about your vit D level and why![/b:5a87ca9228] for the background and fuller information.

Today, I received a letter from my GP and Consultant.

Luckily I live in Gateshead and Gateshead Pharmaceutical Group have recently agreed for Primary Care to prescribe Dekristol (pure Vitamin D).

The recommended dose for me, is 20000 units twice daily for 10 days.

I cannot wait to start it as this musculskeletal aching is really getting me down. I have had quite a few 'ten ton trucks clobber me' but this time the constant aching in every muscle and bone has really got me down to rock bottom. I thought the back pain was bad, but at least the brandy helped that - nothing has helped this time.

I now think that I have a vague idea as to what PMR patients have to put up with. I am full of admiration for you all.

I will keep you posted as to how I progress. 'The only way is up'.

    Good news Mrs K

My Dr is very good with PMR but when I mentioned Vit D levels nothing was really forthcoming so I dont think it is being done generally

You must be so relieved to have got rid of that pain......yet again with Vit D supplements. Not much fun for you to get so uncomfortable yet again but at least it has really proved the the need of extra Vit D for you - great news!

I didn't get around to asking my GP about Vit D when I saw him on Monday re my swollen salivary glands. We're only allowed to seek advice on one subject per appointment! I'd already overstepped the mark by asking if following this infection and whilst still on steroids, should I have extra Vit C during the winter months with all the bugs around - answer \"No\"! Also asked if I could have Doublebase moisturing cream on prescription - \"Yes\", so thought I'd better not tempt my luck any further! Have to see him again in a couple of weeks so will raise Vit D then.

    Keep well!

    Hi All

I recieved this email this morning - anybody else see the programme?

\"breakfast TV this morning was full of \"lack of vit D\" doctors on etc stating how much sunlight we need , how sunscreen stops your vit d and all the things we've already reported to our members - you heard it here first!\"

Looks like TV is catching up with us Patients.

    Hello Mrs K

Lots of things about Vit D on our local TV as there is a girl of I think 12 on the Isle of Wight ( sunniest place in the UK ) !! who has Rickets as her mother had always pasterred her in factor 50

They spoke to specialists at Southampton Hospital and they confirmed they are seeing lots of children with Rickets because of their lifestyle and the factor 50 problem Said we all need at lest 30mins 3 times a week out in the sun no sun cream Had my Nordic walk in brilliant sunshine this morning so thats one !!

Just told my partner that Mrs G said I had to have at least 30 minutes sunshine 8) 3 times a week so he agreed to book 10 days in Spain for next month. I'm indebted to you

PS: We'd been faffing around with dates so the Vit D debate focused my mind

Hello everyone I was just thinking I'd had my half hour sun just now and then realised how wrapped up I'd been

Lovely day here again like yesterday, but cold.

However here's the really exciting news, girls, - I saw several daffodils out in the local park.

Sorry, my son says \"girls\" isn't politically correct - what would you like to be called? Not including Rick and Bob and others of course :D :D

Let's hope for more sun, great for the spirits even if it doesn't make much difference to our VitD.

Hi Green Granny. I can't stand being called 'you guys' - 'mates' has another meaning now (!) and I hate dear, darling, sweetheart or love (especially from people I don't even know :yikes: ). So 'girls' does me fine! I live in sunny Basingstoke and our roundabouts will be smothered in daffodils soon, but nothing showing yet, so lucky you GG.

    Lizzie

PS: And what do I like to be called most of all? Mum and Nannie (but not appropriate here I know  )

    Hi Green Granny

In conversation with my new dentist last week, he said \"you girls\" to me and I'm fine with that - like Lizzie I don't like \"you guys\" and the etceteras from people you don't even know!

Mrs G and mrs k - I read about the Isle of Wight girl and her Vit D deficiency in the newspaper today.

It's a number of years ago now that I was told by a rheumatology consultant to ensure I got out in the sun as often as possible without any sun cream - he was obviously ahead of his time! The advice was to get the sun on to my face and my arms in particular - although the sun was shining on my walk this morning, I wasn't brave enough to bare my arms!

As for increasing numbers of children developing rickets, apart from the sun cream factor could this also be a worsening scenario because of the amount of time they spend indoors playing computer games and watching tv - like many of you I expect, I spent a lot of my childhood outdoors playing with friends :racket:

    Hello

Lizzie Ellen Im jealous now but glad to be of service !! Nothing planned till May I think I got more than 30mins today as Nordic walking was an hour then my horses were over an hour but not as good as Spain !!

    Mrs O

Yes they did say it was lifestyle as well as the Factor 50 Children dont even walk to school and it seems a lot of school sports have gone out of the window also and the rest of the time is computer games etc

    Lets hope this sunshine continues

    Hi 'Girls'

Remember also that as you hit 60, you do not retain or make Vit D as well as you did.

And if you look EileenH discovered about latitude so hey ho - we will have to move South of Tuscany.Eileenh can probably give us the latitude number - me I am hopeless.

I love being politically incorrect so \"girls\" is ok with me.

    Hello Mrs K

You must be making the news not writing about it as all I seem to read or hear about is Vit D !!

In the Mail on Sunday they tested several people and found all their levels were too low I can see it being given out at school soon like we were given Cod Liver Oil and Malt ( for those of us are old enough to remember) !!

    Best wishes

Mrs G - what amazed me about the article today was that they were all relatively young people - good job they didn't do the research on us 'oldies.........our results may have been off the screen'!  MrsO

Good morning everybody ! Me, no pain, hope everyone on the site, also doing well ! No pain, but blooming tired....soon will need a crane to lift me out of bed...Not enough VIT D ? I think I am going to have sardines on toast, and a bit of salad , every lunch time from today

Just spotted on reading What's on TV today : BBC2 - 9 pm HORIZON -

\"The secret world of pain\" : Report on the latest research into pain, including the impact on both moods and emotions in a person's body.

EileenH - Sorry Murray did not get the last ball.....I am so old I remember Little MO and Gussie.... We all young ones at the time, went mad on copying her Gussy's pants....tight white pants, almost to the knee, with wide band of lace....just peeping from under the very first Mary Quant's MINI !.....M&S cornered the market on that one !......

PS. By the fireplace I have a large \" lump \" of Dolomites from near Fusine Laghi....a piece of Italy for me to remember..... Love. Granny Moss.
