Vitamin D deficiency

I've been unwell for on and off now for almost a year. I remember phoning off sick a couple of times before feeling tired and 'achy'. I thought I was just being lazy and this was psychosomatic. Then I started getting really ill when I developed a sudden onset of neck/shoulder pain which is still an on going problem now although the pain has turned into discomfort/ache which I have learned to manage doing exercise and stretches. I also feel sensitivity on other parts of my body (like invisible bruises. For 6 months I was coping with my neck/shoulder problem (symptoms are crawling/tingling sensation in the arm, sensitivity to touch like its bruised and cold feeling and dull ache on my shoulder blade).

Then gradually I started developing 'flu like symptoms' without cough or cold but with tiredness/fatigue and dizzy headache which are intermittent throughout the day, until 2 weeks later I started getting throbbing ache in my legs and eventually I couldn't sit all day without getting restless legs and crawling/tingling sensation in my legs which caused weakness in my legs and worse when I'm going upstairs - and my knees keeps clicking. I went to my doctors who prescribed me with naproxen. And told me that I had something called Reactive Arthritis, which i thought was a misdiagnosis. Overall I though that it could be viral related

This time I've been off work for a week when I started to feel better after a week on naproxen. I came back to work for a week feeling like i thought I recovered. Then boom 2 weeks later gradually the flu like symptom came back with extreme tiredness / fatigue and I've been in bed since. I'm still achy all the time regardless. I have no energy to do anything, even showering is a struggle. Ive been in bed most of the time, sometimes I try to go out with my husband for a few hours but I come back home absolutely exhausted and the soreness/headache i get is a different level. Most of the time I feel like my body is inflamed.

So i decided to get a second opinion and i went to see another GP who referred me for a blood test. A few days later, my results came through and I have Vitamin D deficiency. Everything else they tested seem fine.I have a better outlook now though after the diagnosis, apparently it will take months for the treatment to take effect. I guess now they found something they will stop investigating further (which worries me a little bit) but i guess its process of elimination so treat one thing at a time. Would be great to hear from others who also has this deficiency and whether the treatment was effective?

I was taking 2x 20,000 a week. I am taking an A-Z multi vitamin. My levels were checked and were at 85. But my Dr said the reading was high coz I had just taken a tablet the night before. He wanted to check I was absorbing the vitamin d.

He did want to prescribe me vitamin d with calcium for my maintenance dose but my calcium levels had already returned to normal and I know too much calcium is bad for you. So I agreed with the Dr for me to just continue to take my multi vitamin.

I have been recommended by mine to include magnesium with it and I take calcium tablet just once or twice a week. Also look into vit a n k. There are all essential with vitamin d. Just do some research. Also I have read that while taking tbe vitamin if your pain increases it means you do need it. And what was your result before you started if you dont mind me asking.

I had bone pain and fatigue. But with 3 young kids that wasn't investigated. My liver function test showed a raised ALP. My Dr ran a bone profile and my calcium was low (it remained low for 6 months) when I complained that I had been doing everything to get it up he then checked my vitamin D my level was 25. I also suffered with reflux but that could be related to the other issues I have going in at the moment.

My reflux is much better but I know it should get better if my vitamin d would go up. Do you think your improved after taking vit d? How is your reflux now? Did you have to do aby special diet aswel?

I was scared taking the vitamin d tablets because I read it makes your reflux worse. I was highly stressed when i was taking the antibiotics for 3 days and a week after that too thats when it started but since i have calmed down so has the reflux.

Let me know your new results for vitamin d? I hope the pain improves its scary at this age. I was planning for a baby before all this started and now I am scared of getting pregnant too.

And which brand of vitamin d were you taking x

My reflux was worse if I didn't take it at the end of my meal. If I took it at the begining of my meal the. My reflux would play up. I cannot remember what brand I was taking, I threw the box out when I finished my high dose. My vitamin d levels will be checked again in a month after my maintenance therapy has finished. The only difference I noticed from taking the vitamin d was that I felt less tired and my anxiety level dropped. I still now suffer from bone pain. Which my consultant has now diagnosed as fibromilga. You should try and get it vitamin d level back to normal before you try for a baby. Mine dropped because of having 3 kids close together and breastfeeding them all and a lack of sun!

Hello , I have been just informed that I have a bit D difficiency after feeling so rough for many months !!! Levels 19 .... My symptoms have been extreme exhaustion , awful muscle pain and weakness , shoulder , hip and toe deep bone pain , poor coordination and brain fog ....... I am a little concerned regarding the underlining cause ! Has anyone any knowledge of possible conditions that may cause the sudden deficiency ?

Vit D is mainly got through the sun with a small amount from food. Do you spend a lot of time indoors or cover yourself in sun screen when outside? Also are you Vegan? People with darker skin usually have a lower vit D too. Taking supplements and spending more time outside should increase your levels over the next three months or so.  Hopefully you will then feel better.

They reckon half the population of UK are vit D defficient. Ricketts which had virtually disappeared seems to be making a comeback. Probably all those children (and parents) playing with their X boxes! Winter in UK is not too good for vit D. I started supplements last year with a vit D reading of 26 and my blood test last week had gone up to 62. I am sure the vit D supplements will improve things for you.
