You could always stop taking the vit D for a while and see how you feel without them. I had my vit D checked in May and it was 26. I now take vit D supplements as I am taking steroids. In August the count had gone up to 52. I should imagine there are a lot of people on lower than 43 (which is pretty close to the suggested 50 minimum) who probably do not know they are defficient. My local  pharmacy were offering vit D tests the other day and the pharmacist discovered his assistant was 25!! He said he was sitting inside playing with his electronic games all the time rather than being out in the fresh air. The assistant was dark skinned and people with darker skin tend to have lower levels anyway.

Thankyou for taking the time to reply. I am not dark skinned but work shifts, nights and days and try to get as much fresh air as possible.I have also hypothyroidism and put the tiredness down to that but he said it was linked in to my Liver Function Tests.

I asked at my local pharmacy and they said the vitamin D supplements would not be making me feel like this.

the research shows that if you've had vit D deficiency, then it can take 3 months of supplementation for the positive effects to show.

i'd continue with the vit D (?and calcium ?) until at least 3 months are up. tiredness /lethargy can be as a result of the low vit D levels.

    Hi HEZ64

About two months ago I went to the dr because I was feeling extremely tired, off balance, and had a lot of joint pain and Im only 28!

After getting a blood test I found out my vit d level was 13. Yup extremely deficient. My dr have me prescription vit D3 of 50k iu and I have been taking twice of those for 8 weeks now.

I can tell you that I've started to feel so much better, even my anxiety and slight depression have improved tremendously.

He did recommend taking them with milk and also take.calcium for better absorbtion. I have to get rechecked in two weeks.

    Good luck!

It is suggested one should take vit D with fat based products for it to be absorbed properly. Milk but not fully skimmed, yogurt, even cheese.

      Hi r56198

I got my results yesterday and my level is now at 26 which is still low but much better than when I started about 12 weeks ago. The Dr says it generally takes a few months to get the levels up to a normal range and it might be about 6 months for you to feel relief from symptoms caused by the deficiency. Some of my symptoms are completely gone while some remain but I have seen improvements and are a lot less severe than before.

Are you having any specifc symptoms you are concerned about? what is your vit D level?

      Hi lizzyluv,

My D levels are 25.My symptoms are lack of sleep, tiredness,Muscle pain in calf muscles and back pain...I am taking for last 1 month D3 60,000 IU every week...slightly better..But,not fully recovered...Will take blood test again next week..

Which of your symptoms are still remaining?..What is the  D supplements are you taking?...What is the target level for you?

      Hey r56198

      These were my symptoms before supplementing;

Extreme fatigue (has improved but still there)

      Brain fog (now gone)

      Terrible anxiety (much milder now)

      Mild depression (now gone)

Off-balance/dizzy off and on (remains but I dont get it as often as before)

      Sleeping all the time (gone)

      Hip pain (gone)

General muscle pain all over (somewhat improved but still have it)

      Chest palpitations (gone)

As you can see a lot of my symptoms match yours. my doctor told me that vit d deficiency mimicks MS and Fibro symptoms. He says ideal levels of vitamin D should be around 50-70 so we both still have a long way to go. So hang in there!

      Hi lizzyluv,

For 8 weeks I took Vit D3 50,000iu, after my checkup I am now taking 4,000iu vit d3 a day. I am also making an effort to spend 15 min out in the noon sun every day,I'm in florida but unlike popular belief, is not always sunny. It has been mostly overcast lately but whenever the sun is out so am I. How much time in the sun you'll need will depend on your skin color, but I have noticed I feel so much better while Im in the sun.

Dr wants my level to be around 50-60.  I think that is supposed to be the optimal level

      Hi Lizzyluv

I know it's been a while that you were on this site but was reading your sympyoms and it looks like I have all the symptoms thst you had. Only issue is that my vitD test results done last year were 43. I am dark skinned. I have no real quality of life with these symptoms. Terrible anxiety. Feel like I am going to fall anytime. Doctor thinks it's all in my head.
