I do not know where live, but I feel the medical system is dire need t be more sophisticated!

Now about a year ago, I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis on my pelvis. I was 70 years old. . Well I first found out the results by going online to Kaiser Permanente, which I am a member.

I asked my doctor when he waits so long, he said he was just following some medical guidelines in the US. Recently I found out in Canada the age for men is 65. Also, when I had contacted about 6 month ago the Osteoporosis Foundation, they sent me a beautiful PDF document. In it they stated the age again between 569 and 70. I called the organization to asked how recent their data.  They informed me that they did not have the funds to update their recommendations. Well I first found out the results by going online to Kaiser Permanente, which I am a member.

I was prescribed some tablets, with vey precise instructions. All my life, as a retired engineer, I have always questioned everything! What he prescribed, would have cause me to bleed to death because have had Barrett’s Diseases for at for at least 40 years! Now on top of that he had ordered several endoscopies of my throat, to insure there was not a chance of developing cancer. When I call him and stated I could not the medication for the reason above, he then called the doctor that had done the endoscopies and he confirmed my observations! Mt general practitioner just said sorry twice to me! The consulted another doctor and I needed to get an infusion of Reclast, which the medical facility normally recommends. Now, it has at least 40 side effects. From my experience, I strongly recommend that you get a prescription for Norco (Hydrocodone), a pain killer. Tylenol doe NOT work!

The suggested that I take 1000 mgs tablets of Calcium Citrate three times a day and 2000 mgs of Vitamin D3, A day. Once again, my own investigation, I was allowed to take 4,000 mgs of D3. The doctor did not like my recommendation and stated that he would do a blood analysis after a few months, which he never put it into his Pc and forgot about it.

This year he did do the test for calcium and D3 and the levels were normal! About two months ago I has an X-ray, and it showed that the Osteoporosis decreased to Osteopenia which is thinning of the bones and told me to take the test in 5 years!

The only question I now have is that the body only can absorb 500 mgs of Calcium at one time.

It is interesting what you are saying which I think is about levels and can you take too much.

It sounds like you reversed your osteoporosis by taking a lot of calcium and vitamin d which you may have been lacking which was causing the osteoporosis.

Your doctor sounds shocking. I would get a new doctor as he could have nearly killed you with the fosamax that he prescribed.

There are some good groups on here with ideas on how to boost your bone health.

Read through other osteoporosis and osteopenia threads and share what you have said here as a lot of people will be interested. I nearly missed this so others have too.
