Vitamin D - simple but effective

I do think further community based evidence should be sought to look at the scope of vitamin D deficiency related problems. I'm a relatively fit 58 year old who had increasing muscular-skeletal type problems over the last year. One shoulder, then one hip, then the other, then the other shoulder and ribs too. This caused problems walking, showering and sleeping (with pain in one shoulder rather severe). I've had a series of medical tests of all kinds plus physio. I'm a sceptic when it comes to complementary therapy and that includes over-blown 'nutritionist' claims. I don't take supplements but I do eat healthily and exercise. I heard about the Vit. D deficiency findings on Radio 4 and checked out the info as much as I could. For two weeks now I've been taking cod-liver oil caps after meals. This is not a high dose, but it does make up for not eating oily fish and working inside a lot. I have to confess the result has been remarkable. My 'bone-aches' have subsided and I'm no longer woken in the night by shoulder pain. Hip pain has disappeared. I'm fairly confident this is not a placebo effect.

HH can you please say how much cod liver oil you are taking a day, and if things are still going well for you. Also did you have a blood test to see how low your vit D was.I also have the same type of problems and I am very interested how things are going with you. Be careful about the amount of vit A in cod liver oil, I'm no expert though, just trying to find out as much as I can. Anything of interest you find out do post.

Hi I know I am a couple of years late, but have only just found this site. I to have been told by the Doctor that my vitamin D is very low. I had been suffering with a bad shoulder for over a year.Sent for physio but that didn't seem to help. Anyway I have been prescribed PRO D3 2500 iu I take one every morning, also he has put me on steroids and I have to say I feel so much better. The trouble is : Is it the steroids or the Vitamin D. I will keep you posted as the steroids are being reduce,so I will know which one works for me. It is great to be pain free.

    Hi,

Just want to add I was diagnosed with Vitamin d deficiency a few weeks after thyroid surgery because I was suffering aches and pains in the joints (I had weakness in the legs which I put down to overactive thyroid) as well. Vitamin D level was 16. Consultant wanted me to have 2000 iu daily but my own research led me to find it needed a high dose to rectify the deficiency much quicker. So GP gave 50000 iu weekly tablet for 8weeks. Another 3 weeks to go before I get tested again, but huge difference. Pain in the joints gone, still a bit of leg weakness but have had 3 infections (think it wipes out the immune system a bit) so not 100% yet but hopefully getting there. I think lack of Vitamin D was with me for a long time but just didn't know it. GP in general do not routinely test for it and think I was lucky just after surgery otherwise don't think I would know even now and would have to just have painkillers or something. Doctors are way behind the times with this believe me.
