Vitamin E and Zileuton treatment?

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi there! I'm looking to see if anyone has tried using Vitamin E with Zileuton (anti-inflammatory drug used to treat asthma) for their GA? If so, any good results?

I'm a 21 year old woman and have had GA since I was 16 years old. It began on my foot and ankles predominately on my right side after I had been in a tanning bed. During the first couple years new spots would pop up regularly on elbows, left ankle, and knees but within the last year I have no new lesions and most of my GA is only on right foot and ankle. I've tried topical steriods, apple cider vinegar, dapsone, different birth controls, cortisone shots, and plenty of supplements with no luck. I've been allergy tested and have no allergies. Currently, I am on a low estrogen continuous birth control and the probiotic "pearls". I do believe both of these have helped to stop new lesions and have helped somewhat with inflammation. Being that I've had this frustrating condition for multiple years I'm looking to start trying new things to finally get rid of this pesky condition (aren't we all?). I've read a few studies with vitamin E and Zileuton from women who had GA over a year and all had clearing of their lesions within 3 months (although it was a very small study). Please let me know if you have or if you have some treatments that have helped you! It has been hard being a teenage girl with this condition and I know it has definitely hurt my self-esteem a few times, but it is nice to know I'm not alone!

Thank you all in advance smile

    Hi Madeley

Sorry to hear about your GA! Know exactly how you feel!

I haven't tried the Vit E and Zileuton but was interested that a tanning bed caused your GA.

I has used tanning beds for about 25 yr before I got my first GA on my shin in 2010. I continued using them and didn't get any more GA and that one went within yr. In 2914 I had a hysteroscooy op n then caught Molluscum Contagiousm all over my upper arms. This triggered the GA on my upper arms. From then it has gone ballistic n last yr I noticed whenever I went on the sunbed it popped up and also on the Sin. This has caused me such anxiety and now dread Summers!

Were you able to tan in the sun whilst you have had GA or did you have to avoid both.?

I also found it interesting you mentioned the low estrogen pill as mine all started at about 42 when I started perimenopause and has got significantly worse as menopause progressed. Are hormones at the root of it all? Tried HRT tho without success.

Hooe the treatment you tried works for you. Good Luck!

      Hi Kendra!!

To begin, my dermatologist does quite a bit of work with GA and absolutely believes it stems mostly from hormones. Basically, I have began doing the low dose estrogen continuous BC to try and balance out my hormones so they don't go out of wack. I noticed when I was nearing my period when I was not doing continuous BC my GA would flare up and become very inflamed- much like it does when I'm stressed. So by using the BC and probiotic the main goal is to just balance out my body as much as I can.

For the tanning beds I have stayed out of them since being diagnosed with GA. I notice my spots get much darker in the UV light...although that is a treatment method that works for some people. I guess it just depends on the person! I do lay out quite a bit though and notice the inflammation of spots somewhat dies down in summer. I know not many people care to cover their spots but for me I was always self conscious so I ended up buying "Dermablend" foundation and it has helped really well to cover my spots if I am going out or my GA is showing. Just thought I would share that as well.

      Hi Madelyn

Thanks so much for your reply. It's good to not feel quite so alone with this condition.

I am convinced there is a hormonal link as I had none of this prior the onset of menopause and have read there are a lot of women on here who have also started with GA in menopause tho I realise you are far too young for that! 😊. But also ppl say it goes away in pregnancy.

If I could lay out in the sun I wouldn't mind about not using the tanning bed but mine seems to flare in the sun too! 😢. As someone who has always tanned (although was sun sensitive which I conttolled with allergy suncream and got nothing on a tanning bed?) I am finding that as hard as having the GA.

Like you I cover mine although last year for the first time got a few little ones on my hands. I don't know if stress plays a part too as since this all started in June 2014 I have been continually stressed!! I did try bioidentical HRT last year but seemed to make things worse. Suppose the hard part is getting your hormones correctly re-balanced!!

Wishing you all the very best with your treatment and hopefully it sounds like you're on to something that will work for you!

Madelyn, I've been on vit E, but no Zileuton. If you are on FB there are a couple of sites for GA. Granuloma support, but another one I would get on is Bliss Kiss psoriasis, eczema and granuloma annulare. a lady developed this oil for fingernails, but apparently works well for psoriasis and eczema. They are going to be doing a trial for GA hopefully soon where you will get a free product to try, now they are getting more GA sufferers on it. Post on it you're new and are interested in a trial. They had some success with a 2 people with GA. I started it a week ago. I have it horribly all over. So I take a "bath" in it. Lots of people on the GA sites. It appears everyone presents differently and nothing works for everyone. I've had mine 1 year. Hope to see you on another site!
