Vitamins, Supplements and Herbal Teas

I am 27 days post op I had right THR I've been off of for 11 days now and I wonder if it is a good idea to start taking my vitamins and supplements again, and same about herbal teas, I know I had to stop taking them 5 days prior; but never occur to me, to ask when Could I start taking them again. I had to visit the emergency room 5 days after the surgery due to a fever, one of the test they performed was a blood culture and  they took a ridiculous amount of blood, which made my body to  decompensate  and recovering from that one was one more to the list after the surgery.I'm eating healthy and foods that help me to recover, very low fat food, high in iron, fibre, many dark green vegetables ; but I still thinking, it'll be a good idea to be able to go back to my supplements

I'll appreciate your input on this one.  smile

Ask your doc.  Generally supplements don’t have much of an effect on outcomes.

I was told the reason to stop vitamins etc was that they don’t know exactly what is in them. They might contain something that reacts adversely with some drug you could be given during or after surgery. I imagine that, once you stop taking any other medication you were prescribed in hospital, you should be okay to start vitamins again. I still have about a week of rivaoxoban to take (against blood clots) then I’m going to resume my vitamins.

if you want to start earlier, then I’d either consult your doctor or ask a pharmacist.

      Hi Melody,

It makes sense, well I,ve been off of Garmin for more than 10 days now, so I can  assume it is ok to start now.

    Hi there

I started when I got out of hospital. Magnesium. Vit. C and D. Most docs know little about supplements. If you have a naturopath check in but id it were me I would do then. Good luck with your healing. It's a game changer

I started my supplements after I was off meds prescribed by surgeon.

I avoid the meds that are blood thinners such as Vitamin E because I was on an injection, followed by 4 weeks on higher dosage aspirin therapy to avoid blood clots. I also make sure I have lots of protein in addition to fiber and veggies. Since I'm primarily a vegetarian (eat fish and dairy), I am used to limitations of choice. I've always been a label reader and checked interactions of drugs and supplements, so manage it.

I've wanted to start a cleanse (I do that couple times a year) but know that won't be best choice since I'm still in "healing mode" from surgery 8 weeks ago.

I never had issue about herbal tea but careful which ones I choose for now. I avoid too much caffeine, too, with only 1 large cup a day if at all.
