Vomiting during Peri menopause

Posted , 7 users are following.

I have been vomiting since past 4 months. Doctor says it's Peri menopause. I had an endoscopy & no gastritis was diagnosed. I was diagnosed with GERD. Am on PPI. Any one else experience this ? Does GERD subside after menopause?

Yes, but only take it when you need it. I had it bad too, diagnosed with GERD as well. But once I found the culprits, it was pepper and curry, 2 spices my body couldn't tolerate I was able to wean myself off the PPI but it took me a year to figure what was causing me to get so sick. If you can find the culprit(s) there's half the puzzle solved.

Thank you Sochima... I have cut down my diet to only rice , lentils, vegetables, watermelon & apples. I have cut down everything from my diet. The issue is I vomit at times even after taking PPI. I retain food in the stomach but throw up lot of white foam & liquid. This is what is worrying me. As I read in many places Peri menopause does not cause vomiting.

Have you had a complete blood work up? White foam is associated with several conditions not a part of perimenopause. White foam isn't normal, please go see your gp.

    Hi Armin,

I share your concerns and issues. I was diagnosed with GERD in my 20’s. I’m 46 now and was able to manage early with diet, but have been taking PPI’s on and off throughout  my 40’s since being peri. GERD can get worse while going through peri due to fluctuating hormones. I have also been very careful with my diet.  No dairy or gluten per direction from my dr.  If I slip up and don’t take my PPI or eat something I shouldn’t I truly pay for it with nausea, extreme heart burn (can’t even drink water), gas issues, etc. It is very painful!  I do find that the PPI, light meals multiple times throughout the day, and walking helps to keep the GERD symptoms in check.

Hang in there. You will feel better!!  Hugs!!  —Sarah

      Hello Armin,

Yes, I had vomiting from time to time and stomach pain, so I was referred to a gastroenterologist who performed an endoscopy and biopsy of my stomach lining. All results were normal. The gastroenterologist said I had a very small area of irritation in my stomach, not an ulcer, just irritated stomach lining. He recommended continuing on the PPI, diet change and small frequent small meals.

I would recommend following up with your gastroenterologist or general practitioner about the vomiting.  You should not have to continue to suffer with this and your doctors may be able find some other solutions to ease your discomfort.

Please keep us posted on your progress. Hugs—Sarah

Thank you Sarah .. Hugs to you too.. I thought I was the only one who had this .. Yes I'm under treatment ... But I guess my anxiety is making things worse... I pray to God no female should suffer like this.. & everyone should be blessed with Good health always .... He says it's due to hormonal fluctuations...

Yes, Armin. That was one thing I didn’t mention—the anxiety. It can most definitely be the worst part. My anxiety with peri has caused me to not want to leave my house some days. The anxiety will make any peri symptom that much worse.  I try to remind myself that the hormone fluctuations are driving the many symptoms, including anxiety (what a vicious cycle!) and that I just need to take a deep breath, take a step back and try to look at the whole situation from the outside (rather than in my head—which I’m constantly doing).  Some days are better than others, but I keep telling myself I know I will get through this.

I understand your anxiety. Please try to take it day by day and know that you will get through it!  A calmer you with help calm your gastro issues.  Sending you hugs and strength—Sarah

I have this problem for the past four years. I got admitted in hospital because of dehydration several times, the vomiting just goes on and on.. My doctor treats me with terrible antibiotics and I feel better for a few months and them wham! Again! Its like a cycle. I don't know what to do. All the symptoms are similar, it happens when I am stressed or when I eat at a restaurant and always when I am about to get my periods. I am 46

Thank you for your post. I am peri and just got my period after a 6 month break. I got my period Saturday morning and Saturday night was in full "food poisoning" vomit mode. Today is Wednesday and I am just now able to get up out of bed. I have swung through every symptom from projectile vomiting to dehydration headaches to full body aches, all the while in complete fatigue mode. I didn't put it together with my many months of constant heartburn until I decided to google it and found your post. It must be related as no one else got sick from the food we ate on Saturday and no stomach bug is going around. Also that it rises and falls with the duration of my period (which is heavier than usual) makes me sure that this is some kind of crazy side effect of perimenopause...and it is horrible. I can't do this again, much less for years. At 54, I am too old. Thank you again for your post and if you find a cure, please let me know.
