Vulvar biopsy today - any advice to help ease the pain and how long did it take you to feel better?

I am in so much pain that it's made me cry.  Hubby gave me some painkillers just now. I know I've just had this done and it's to be expected but it's just awful.  How long did it take any of you to feel better?  I am going away on Friday.  I really need to feel better by then so does it ease after a day or two?  I know everyone is different but I just need some advice on how to deal with it and how long it took you to feel better.  Thank you.

hello...I am sorry  you are having so much pain.  I understand and sympathize.  When I was diagnosed, I had had two biopsies...one on left side and one on right side.  I must say I really, really didn't like going through that!  I had a local anesthetic, which meant several injections before each side was cut, and it may have been the fault of my dr. (I wonder  now how many of those she had done, since she was a regular ob/gyn and not a LS specialist)  Anyway, it was painful.  However, I was given a prescription for Lidocaine, a topical drug pain killer.  After getting the prescription filled, I went home and went to bed.  All that day I rested.  (I felt very sorry for myself, I must say).  I used the Lidocaine when I had to go to the bathroom, so that helped a lot.  I also got in the shower each time I had to go to the bathroom and ran warm water over myself as I was peeing. (I hate that word but what else sounds much better??  Urinating?  ick)  It was a bother, but it helped very much so I did it.  To be honest, the pain didn't last long at all.  I was very surprised because the biopsies hurt so much, I was sure I would suffer a long time.  by the next day I wasn't in much pain at all.  I hope you have the same outcome.  Rest, take an over the counter pain reliever like Tylenol, hopefully you have Lidocaine to use, or something similar, try the warm water running over  you, or even pour warm water over yourself using a sitz bath if you have one, and I hope the pain doesn't last long at all.

Thank you.  I've got my husband to take a look (sorry that sounds bad lol) and he got a mirror for me and it's like a big burn that has gone black around the edges and white in the middle.  No stitches just burnt and it is quite a large area (with what looks like a soldering iron according to hubby).  The procedure was awful as they never gave the local anaesthetic time to kick in and proceeded immediately and I almost hit the nurse with my knee jerk reaction.   I felt better than this after having a baby!!  Thank you for getting back to me :-)

What the heck!  What on earth did they do?  Why is the area of biopsy black around the edges...  I am feeling even sorrier for  you now!  I didn't want to risk   scaring or upsetting anyone reading this who is scheduled for a biopsy...but my experience with the local anesthetic is the same as yours...they don't help much if any at all.  My dr. offered to stop for a bit and let me have a break, but I said No..I just wanted to get it over with.  But for me, the worst part was the biopsies.  After that, the pain didn't last nearly as much or as long as I had feared it would.  I felt that I was acting like a big baby, but I went to bed and stayed there the whole rest of the day.  It does help to stay off your feet, keeps the pressure off your poor bottom.  I was terrified of having to go to the bathroom, but since I took the above mentioned precausions (is that spelled right?  it looks wrong, but I am losing my ability to spell) even using the bathroom  w as not so bad.

Was your dr. male or female?  Mine was (and still is) female, but I am still holding a bit of a grudge that the biopsy hurt so much!!   :o)

I do remember having stitches and being told to put a mirror on the floor between my legs and keep an eye on it. The worst part for me was the needles supposedly to make the op easy!

My biopsy took a couple of weeks before it felt better.  stay on top of your pain meds. Hope you get some relief soon.  The doctor also called in a topical lidocaine for me because of the pain.  You might ask for that as well.

I screamed when mine was done because it hurt so much. I remember that part but do not remember afterwards. It was about 20 years ago. The needles were awful because it is such a sensitive area.

Maybe a painkiller overnight. It should not hurt for long though if I have forgotten part but remembered the actual biopsy.

Thank you for the help - I've just rung my gp and she's doing a prescription for that lidocaine stuff - thank you for all your help.  Hopefully, it will ease it a bit and I guess the time will be a good healer too.  Thank you everyone - feeling relieved already knowing I can have something to ease it.

I screamed too with the injection of the anaesthetic but after that it did its job and I didn't feel the procedure at all or the stitch afterwards. It also kept me comfortably numb for a couple of hours following. As it wore off the site was very sore indeed and throbbing and the knobbly stitch uncomfortable and annoying. Ordinary painkillers kept the pain manageable although not gone completely. I certainly rested up for a couple of days, kept walking which rubbed to a minimum. But it improved in a reasonable time frame I think. I remember wondering if the stitch was going to dissolve as it should, but then it did.

I really feel for you, I'm not sure what's gone on there I'm sure! Hopefully your pain meds will bring you relief and time will do the rest.

you are/were fortunate that one injection of anesthetic numbed the procedure.  I had more than 4 injections during the biopsy and they did not numb anything...I felt the incisions on each side.  I had no stitches, tho.  Afterward, the dr. showed me a vial with the little "cones" of tissue in the solution which would be sent to the lab.   She seemed to think it would help me to see that only small bits of tissue were cut out.  Ha.  Didn't help at all.

It really is barbaric when you think about it. I screamed as well and tears just kept sliding down my face. After I just stood outside sobbing. Then it was more my mind going into overdrive. She did the bio up quite high so it didn't hurt to pee. I was okay after a few days. The result of being so upset led to a major flare up. Salt baths worked a treat for me. I really felt very alone at this time and had no one to talk to about it. Whilst my husband is very supportive I just kept it to myself. I still can't talk about it openly because it upsets me so much. I was so happy to find this forum and all the advice and understanding. I hope it all settles down for you and have a wonderful trip. X

I understand your feelings.  There just isn't much support out there.  Im so sorry for all of you who had to endure the biopsy that way.  My doctor put me in the hospital and under general anesthesia.  She said it would hurt way too much for me to endure with just local.  The black is from where they cautarize (sp:?) the area to keep it from continuing to bleed.  The stitches do hurt afterwards I think because of where they are...  Hope it gets better for you.

Warm bi carb bathes help and when you pee try to spread as far apart as possible and try to aim straight down a few days and it will be a lot better hope this helps

Thank you everyone.  I am feeling a little better today - still sore but more manageable.  I think I felt a little sorry for myself yesterday but definitely a little easier today.  Thank you again :-)

I felt sorry for myself a lot longer than a day!   I whined to any one who would listen   :o)         Even when it really didn't hurt anymore, I still shuddered when I thought of what I had gone through.  I can't think of a lmore sensitive part of the body to have a (or several) needles stuck in.  Someone needs to develop a better diagnostic test...like a topical pap smear-type of test, or X-ray or something!

I totally agree. I've had lots of procedures including a dreaded colonoscopy and gastroscopy - they were a doddle compared to this.  Even giving birth to 9-10lb babies with a 3rd degree tear and a large incision seemed easier (although, I do recall the 3rd degree tear being unbearable and needing physio lol so probably forgotten how bad that was) - but this.....I thought there was no light at the end of the tunnel yesterday.  I have to go out later and I'm hoping I can manage it ok!!!

I truly hope you do well this afternoon when you go out.  If you already have the Lidocaine, use it a bit before you go...maybe take a Tylenol or something similar.  All of us here understand the worry involved in the trials of this LS.  You should feel a bit better every day from now on....wink
