Waiting for a Discectomy..now got burning in other buttock

Hi.. I've just joined and very new to this.
I am currently on the NHS waiting list for a L5/S1 Discectomy. The pain started end of August last year. I had a prolapsed disc 6 years ago, L5/S1, but it sorted itself out within 7 weeks. But, since then, every few months I get low back pain for about 3 days then it goes. This time tho it didn't go. The pain got worse and worse! I went to my Dr who is great. She referred to physio. That made it worse. I then paid to see a chiropractor..again it didn't help at all. The sciatic pain has been excruciating..down my left buttock, thigh and back of knee. I've got weakness in my left foot aswell. I'm on Gabapentin, Codeine and paracetamol..and it's taking the worst of it away. Yesterday and today, I have felt a slight burning in my right buttock!! No back pain..Just this burning. Do I leave it.. see what happens or see my Dr or ring my spinal team.? I'm scared it's going to progress like the left side! On my MRI scan, the L5/S1 is a large prolapse, L4 has also prolapsed but not touching nerves. I also have DDD in those 2 discs. Any advice will be great.. thankyou

Hi, I have the same as you, large disc prolapse, L5 S1. I had bad sciatica for over a year, went physio which made it worse so had MRI which showed large disc prolapse, started doing just a couple of stretches from YouTube and within couple of weeks was pain free. Lasted about 2 months then went again, was stuck in bed for a week but as soon as I could stand I started doing these stretches again and within a week I was feeling a lot better. Have now been pretty much pain free for the last 3 months almost, fingers crossed. As soon as I start feeling sciatic pains I do the standing lumbar extension stretch and the next day the pains gone, I also don't really get the pain in my back, just in bum and down leg. Seems that arching my back helps alot even have cushions in car and on chairs that sit in arch of my back which helps so much, maybe you should try this stretch as long of course you can, obviously stop if it causes more pain

I know how you feel it's awful, I couldn't do any other stretches so just stuck to the one I mentioned and another 1 and that was it, everyone is different though, i probably would take it easy for a bit and not do too much and hopefully the inflammation will calm down. Can't do any harm in talking to your doctor if your worried though, I know my symptoms used to change every week which could be very scary, was even getting tingling in my shoulder blade for a few months? I also had weakness in my foot and a limp up until about 3 weeks ago which I'm happy to say has now sorted itself out, just have numbness in parts of leg now but can live with that, really hope your feeling better soon
