Waiting for hip replacement

Posted , 11 users are following.

I have been waiting for a date for a hip replacement surgery since December 2015. I was told there was an 18 week waiting list so I would be looking at May for my surgery. I had my pre op on the 9th of March 2016. May came and nothing. I rang the hospital to be told there is a back log of about 8 weeks. I rang again on the 30th of june2016 and was told they will be in touch in a couple of weeks. It's now 3 and a half weeks and still no date. Has anybody else had to wait this long and is there anything I can do to speed things up. Over 7 months is a bit too long to be fair.

Hi Nige. Sorry. But it sounds like your the victim of social medicine. I'll hope forr the best for you. It's kind of too bad none of these kind of reports were available in the USA before the now widely known Obama care.

In the usame I had surgery45 days after I decided to have it done but our waiting lists are starting to grow due to the socialization of medicine

I'm a health insurance guy and have in depth reports on waiting for care.

Hi Josh, it still baffles me, that in this country it depends where you live. I spoke to one guy who lives about 100 miles from me and he was seen, in and sorted within 3 months.

I just have to chime in and say that most parts of socialized medicine work great.  I have had a few other health issues over the years and always got very good care.  No one is ever denied care.  If you can't afford the premiums, they are covered for you.  It's mostly just these awful orthopedic wait lists.  They are going to have to figure them out!

I was referred at the end of January 2015 after being put off with a range of excuses in October I was finally referred by my NHS hospital to a local private hospital as i had been waiting so long and regularly phoning the secretary. After less than 7 weeks, at the end of November I finally had the operation in the private hospital.

By the time I had the operation I could no longer walk without extreme difficulty so i was extremely grateful for the operation.

Keep asking and eventually they may take some notice.

Hi Dennis, I felt as if I was an isolated case, but it seems it's just the norm with lots of people. I think I may have to start ringing on a regular basis. Hope all is going well with you now.

    Hi Nige,

So sorry to hear this - I have read many stories here about the list and how long some members sometimes had to wait -

I live in Holland and had a different experience - I lived in Los  Angeles for 34 years and am here now for 2 years - I was referred to  orthopedic surgeon who  thought I was perfect candidate for THR (right hip) - I freaked out, went back in denial until I could not stand it any longer - made an appointment, filled out a a couple of forums and went through tests (heart film, blood work etc.) - The wait was 6-8 weeks which was way too soon for me - went to pre-op and surgery 3 weeks later ...

same with 2nd THR --- maybe living in the country and  the hospital being a small regional one helps ----

good luck to all of you and I hope you get your date soon

    big warm hug

    renee

Hi Renee, pleased everything went well for you. I would love a speedy turn around time like that. The thing that Browns me off is, when I eventually get my right hip done I then have to wait again to get the left one done. It seems like a life time away now.

Since my first hip replacement I got referred to different NHS hospital under the same consultant I saw at the private hospital and had a second hip replacement after 20 weeks from referral.

That just goes to show the differences between hospitals and how they organise these operations.

I am a lot better since the second operation and am now getting around a lot better.

Hope you do not have to wait too much longer to get yours done.

That would be great if they would do that for me. We live in hope Dennis.
