im curious how long all of you had to wait to get cataract surgeries done after initial visit? the top surgeons in my area seem to be 1-2 years. that seems an insanely long wait. any other options, other countries etc?

I haven't had surgery yet, but last year a neighbor who did waited something like two or three months after initial appointment for first eye then that long again for second eye. I'm seeing her surgeon at the end of this month. It's my first appointment with him, and it will be six weeks after I called for the appointment.

I waited that long for my first eye to be done by public healthcare in Canada. My second eye, which I initiated 18 months after the first eye, wait was only 3 weeks. The public healthcare system is improving in Alberta where I am in Canada. Private clinics are now allowed to do cataract surgery under the public health coverage. My first eye was done in a hospital, and the second one in a private clinic, but still covered by public healthcare. Both were done by the same surgeon.

If I had stayed with my original surgeon, whom I saw in mid-August 2022, then the wait to do my first eye would have been about six and one-half months. This is in Greater Boston.

How has everyone found the best cataract surgeon in their respective cities?

I live in Kansas City and we have many cataract surgeons who claim to be the best.

My California surgeon is extremely highly regarded, and was prepared to schedule me within 3 weeks after my initial consultation.

Even my HMO scheduled me 5 weeks after consultation (I ended up canceling, have not had a surgery yet).

1-2 years sounds terrible. Socialized medicine?
