walking?

Posted , 12 users are following.

After 11 1/2 weeks, I am hoping...no, praying I get this cast off Wed. Everyone around me seems to think that I should be able to walk when this happens. It would be nice if that were true, but I don't think this is going to happen. I know the odds of me being able to just stand alone are slim, but if I say that they tell me that I am just scared. Yes, I am scared. Right now I am scared of everything. I am scared I will never walk again. I am scared I will fall again. I am scared I won't work again. Most of all, I am scared of disappointing my family. They have been taking such good care of me, but I know they are ready to have their lives back. Hell, I want my life back. Thanks for letting me rant.

    Good luck leelee tomorrow.

im sure you will be able to stand and maybe walk a little.

I understand the fear of not being able to walk, I feared the same, probably most others did so too.

I can remember not letting go of my crutch I case I fell, and now been back to work full time since mid Jan.

I was worried about not working again, bills to pay etc. My gp further added to my fear by saying recovery from a broken ankle is max 3 months, and if you have no improvement soon we will have to look at other options, including not returning to work! This was not going to happen, 3 weeks later I returned to work. I wouldn't worry of disappointing your family, they will fully understand, and will continue to take good care of you. Don't forget, these injuries could happen to anyone, then they would get the same good care from you. It's natural to want your life back, natural to rant, it ok to do so, that's another reason for this forum. We are all taking this journey together

They post poned my appt, I don't go until next Wed. If I am able to stand when this thing comes off, I will be one happy girl.

I was really upset when they called, but feeling better now.

You are right, it could happen to anyone. Until you have been in this situation, you have no idea.

      Thanks for pep talk.

      Very informative Ron. Thank you.

Have you all added a multi-vitamin or vitamin D supplements now that you have had the fracture? I've heard mixed things about vitamins.  I just take a Vitamin E daily (have done for years) and a baby aspirin (since the break).

I haven't been taking anything special since my surgery, other than what I normally take.  Fish oil, D3, CoQ10 (because I take a stain), although am taking a baby aspirin as well.  Eating plenty of cheese and yogurt so getting plenty of calcium.  And plenty of protein.  Just all around trying to eat healthy and avoiding junk.

I am sorry to hear about the postponement. It just does not make sense to delay your healing for ten days!!! Regardless of emergency. You deserve a better Doctor, I am sorry to say you are not getting the proper care you deserve. I pray you get good medical care from your doctor's office. Nick

My doctor is only here 2 days a week. He flies in from another state, does surgeries on Tues and sees patients on Wed. He is truly a good doctor, beat trauma surgeon in my area. If I wasn't a workman's comp case I could see another doctor, but workman's comp won't allow it. When you get hurt on the job, you have no control. Everything is up to workman's comp.

Dear leelee: Regardless, it is so heart breaking that you are being delayed at least 8 days. With a cast, that seems like a century. God bless you! Nick

Thanks Nick. You are right, every day in a cast seems like forever. Hopefully, when I go next week the gaps will be gone and it can come off. Maybe this is the universes way of making sure I am healed.

Perhaps this sort of thing should be kept to the Lord to fix.

Can't the cast department cut your cast off?  Then you can start PT.  My husband started to cut  mine off, got halfway and then we went to the cast clinic.  They cut it the rest of the way.  They should xray, give  you an airboot. I'm sure no one is as impatient as I am.  Try Symphytum, homeopathic for bone knitting. Mine healed in 3 weeks.  They were shocked by how fast it healed and I'm 63 and have osteopenia.  You can buy it at healthfood stores if you're worried about non union.  I had non union with a fractured elbow and the said I needed a bonegraft.  I took it for 3 weeks and went back and my bone totally healed.

Oh this is another name for comfrey I believe. I keep reading about this and it's benefits and ordered some plants online to grind up the leaves and roots and use it externally. I thought i read several places that there could be issues taking it internally...mainly damage to the liver. Have you heard anything about this side effect when taking it internally?

Never take comfrey internally or rub into open wounds, but yes a great bone healler

Linda, I don't know what a cast clinic is, but I will ask. I will also send my husband to the health food store. I am willing to try anything to make sure I am healed. Thanks

Thanks Lee- it seems like it may be really worth trying. Sounds like some people have had miraculous results! I wonder how much more potent that rubbing the real plant on vs a lotion would be. I understand mixing in the roots of the plant is super important too, because the roots pack a ton of extra minerals in them.

      Missing my high heels... Patti

By the way, this is an xray of my 'hardware':

Gosh !! That's quite something . Thanks for sharing smile

Sorry, don't know why it rotated when I uploaded it.

That's impressive! I now see what the long screw there looks like. I don't have that one. Bet you are excited to get that out. Will that be an easy surgery/recuperation? Here are my xrays from yesterday. How do you know how well the bone is growing back?
    • Posted

Actually, Patti, looking at your xray, I think you do have that long screw. Aren't those 2 on the right such screws?  Not really sure as not a doctor.  But your doctor would have told you if any screws would be coming out.  And I can't tell from mine or your xrays if the bone is healing.  Guess that's why they pay those docs the big bucks!

Gosh, I don't even see my surgeon anymore, he's so busy.  I see his PA.
    • Posted

I saw the PA once right after surgery, but every other time it is him. I am really glad it is, I always have a lot of questions and he is really good about answering every one.

They never told me anything comes out. I'll verify next time I go in. Thought those two were just holding one if the 3 bones that they had to support. Thanks- I will check! It does seem impossible to read these x-rays! I keep asking if I'm healing okay and they keep saying "yes you are" and that's it. Doctors don't always give you much info! This week's visit I was just concentrating on finding out when I could start getting on the PT's schedule and that's wen he told me I'm about 4 weeks away from that.

      Hi Ron !

I've tried uploading my X-ray and haven't been successful. Can you please tell me how to do it? I'm quite well up on all this usually but not just here haha. Thank you 🙃

Hi! It's the far right upper box with the little mountain symbol and sun (I guess that's what it is). You just hit reply, then hit that box on the far upper right, and then you can upload the photo from your computer.

Where are you from MsCamboot? US? UK?

      Hi patti.

I'm in Australia. I don't have a computer. I'm using iPhone 5. I can't see a mountain or sun symbol but thank you, I'll keep looking.

No can't see anything like that patti. I'm guessing you can't upload from a phone. 🙄

I was about to go out to dinner with my daughter who is an engineer, and much more tech savvy than I am, when i read this. I asked her to try with my iphone 6. She tried copying and pasting, and a few other things, and said she doesn't think there is a way to do it on the iphone. I guess you have to do it on a PC/Mac. Or maybe someone else has an idea.

Thank you anyway Patti. I too tried to copy and paste. I guess this forum needs to update on technology haha. 😀

I live in Oregon.  The cast clinic is available to have casts applied or removed.  A doctor can send you there or they can do them in the office.  They are available for emergencies and can replace one if too tight.  They call it the cast clinic.  I live in a ski resort so there are lots of ortho's here.
