Walking after 6 weeks bunionectomy

Hi Friends,

For those of you who had only one foot done, I am wondering how you are feeling at 6 weeks. I have been walking for about 10 days in the aircast, as I had the surgery 6 weeks ago yesterday, but my foot is still sore and hurts, and I have severe sciatica in my good leg from sitting around for so long. My wound is raw and red, though no bleeding or oozing, of course.  I thought I woud be much better by now.  Is anyone else at the 6 week point, and in pain?  I'm very dicouraged as I was told I could drive at 7 weeks, tho I am in this boot until after 8 weeks.  Thanks so much.

Hi Joyce.. I had my right foot done 6 weeks ago... I have been walking on my heel since like the second week.. Not a lot but a little.. the crutches were a little dangerous.. I still find I have to elevate daily too...

?I was driving 2 weeks after my sugery  However my husband had vascular surgery 2 weeks after I had foot sugery, soo I had no choice  but to walk, and drive...

?I was suppose to go for 6 week followup Thursday but a snow storm closed all the rd to the dr, so I have to wait another week. I find I can get around pretty good with that fancy boot but I'm still not wearing a shoe or over doing things.. My foot below the pin feels weird and my big toes is bumb and dry and calased I hope that's suppose to happen... my scars are not scars either, the dr did a great job. it'll look like a cat scratch maybe when all healed...

I am having the other foot done once this one is healed.. I'm dreading the first 2 weeks of it.. but I cant wait to have proper walking feet and less back pain!!!

?anyhoo I was just googling post op cause I have a few concerns.. like

?why does the bottom arch of my foot feel like its on fire.. and toe spacer do I have to keep it in.. its driving me nuts.. LOL

thanks for posting and saring.. I am following

6 weeks on Tuesday January 16th.   I’m walking short distance like 20 feet or so in air boot for about a week.  Hurts like s number 7 out of 10.  I finally hit my breaking point today.   Told my wife I was going to get out of the car (on our return trip to get groceries ) and take off running thru the snow and see how far I make it before I go down in pain!   Lay in the snow and flail and kick into a circle!  Lol.    I thought I would be functioning way better than this by now.  Foot is still bandaged after 5 weeks and 5 days.  I see doctor tomorrow.  Getting X-ray and supposedly into regular shoe if none is healed.  I bought a larger than normal pair of sneakers last weekend.   Foot swells up and is beet red.   Hurts.  Running out of patience.  What have I done.

Try not to despair Martin, I know I did and it really did not help, thought I would never be able to stand on two feet, walk again or be out of pain and discomfort. 8 weeks on and I can walk/hobble in a wide shoe although not without support of one crutch. I expected to be where I am today 6 weeks ago, but am learning slowly that I have to be patient and trust the process of healing, which is seemingly a lot different in my body than it is in others. Hang on in there I know your pain and frustration, I have only recently stopped taking pain killers completely. My toe in particular feels as if it will explode if I overdo it, just keep your foot up, listen to your body. I saw a physio yesterday who re-assured me of the individuality of this recovery and prescribed some exercises. I am sure it will get better.

      all the best

Thank you Karen for the kind encouragement.  I’ll be 7 weeks on Tuesday January 23rd.  I’m walking on it barefoot in the house.  Still have to wear boot when I leave the house.  The boot hurts my foot.   Swells up either way but walking and doing chores in the house now.   Ankle very weak, makes cracking noises occasionally. Trying to cautiously get my leg and ankle strength back.  Icing and elevating it now after a long day of work and house Work.   Suppose to get rid of boot January 29th.  That

    LOL No seriousily though

?how long will I have to wear this boot.. I see the dr again Feb 22

      Cathy,

It will be a year on Feb 2nd that I had right foot bunionectomy.

I was in my boot 8 weeks.  Had alot of swelling for probably 6 mos post surgery.

I am only now feeling completely healed.

I had to buy wide shoes at first. Your foot has suffered a lot of trauma. Do not rush the healing process.

Lace up Skechers were my go-to shoes.

Don't become discouraged. I do not regret having the surgery. Only a red scar remains  & I'm wearing almost any medium width shoe I desire now.

      Hi Cathy,

I think I might be luckier than you, and certainly haven't had pins which needed to be removed, gosh how brave you are. my op was on 18th Jan 18, so I am 5 weeks tomorrow in a boot. I am very impatient and so decided I needed to go to the bank today. I managed to drive safely there and back, I wont be doing that very often, but it felt so good. I then tried taking the bandage off and putting an older comfy shoe on, I only sat watching TV in it, but matching shoes felt so nice. I have been told to take the bandage off next week and wear normal shoes, my consultant said,0 when asked, possibly sandals. I am looking for a flattish pair with Velcro straps across my foot so I can vary the fit. Hotter seem to have some at about £50, will look for cheaper ones.

I hope your swelling goes down soon, Have you tried Guinots 'swollen leg milk?' It took my swelling down, also laying on the floor with my feet up on the bed for 10 minutes a few times a day. Hope you are out of that awful boot soon, they don't have any street cred do they?

Hello everyone. I see there is some recent activity on here, so I decided to join. I am in the US and just had my second foot done 2 weeks ago. Both times, my situation has been non-weight bearing for 6 weeks, and then a walking boot. My bunion was shaved and bones cut; I have 2 good sized screws inside the top of foot (above the toes).

I found this page because I was looking for information about injuries after surgery. I am so active that I have a difficult time sitting still. Last time, I banged my foot twice during recovery, went to docs to be on the safe side, and all was okay. Today, I just fell on my new foot! Seems like all must be okay, since it did not do any damage last time when I did this. Does anyone know if there is any way to tell for sure? My doctor always feels my bones and foot when I go in, but I have no idea what he is feeling for. Anyone have any knowledge of this?

My foot fell twice off the scooter, that was so painful. I called the doc and the nurse told me it happens a lot to patient to patients. She said I would be able to tell if I did damage by unrelenting excruciating pain. But always wise to call and check.

Thank you, Lulu. The pain has not been much worse than before my foot hit, and it is not constant. I would just go in, except that I live in a very rural area, and my husband has been adamant about me not doing anything! So, I have not told him what happened. I went to see the doctor after I banged my first foot last year, and everything was okay, so it seems like it must be kind of difficult to actually be injured while wrapped up so well.

Hi I’m at six weeks this  Wednesday having had my bunion removed and hammertoe straightened.  My foot is still very stiff and swells up if on feet too long but wound has healed.  I’ve to wear my heel boot until my X-ray a week on Friday so hoping to get a shoe on and drive then.

This is my second operation having had the other one done last year.  This year has been so much better than last time.   Much quicker recovery.   Good luck.

so how long was it before you fully recovered from your first op people say up to 12 months hopefully not

Hi Jane, I’m also interested in when you felt recovered as far as the swelling. I know it can last for up to a year. But, when did you feel for the most part, you could wear a shoe the majority of the day without much swelling?

      Hey, Ann and Lulu ~

This is my second surgery; It was about 9 months before I was back to normal (all shoes and such) last time. I was pretty much there at 6 months, with just a few lingering issues, such as wearing heals.

6 months well that should take me to summer hope im running around properly by then i have 2 more grandchildren due then need to be fit and able to help out

I was doing pretty much everything before then, just not the same as before until 6 to 9 months. Here are some details copied from my blog after I was no longer wearing the surgical shoe:

      - Wearing my own shoes: tennis shoes with laces loosened all of the way at week 10. Slip on dress shoes with low heel at week 12.

      - Walking in my shoes: 1 mile in 23 minutes on flat surface during week 10; 1 mile in 20 minutes at week 12; just a tad faster the following week; 1 mile in 17 minutes without pain at week 14.

      - Yard work: week 10.

      - Bicycle riding after wearing own shoes: After 12 weeks, rode 12 miles on a mountain bike type trail with virtually no pain; up and down a few mild inclines, stops and starts, and able to stand up while pedaling.

      - Standing on a hard surface with no pain at 13 weeks.

      - Range of motion has increased in my leg on surgical side, although ankle and toe range is still lacking at 13 weeks.

      - Walking a mile in 18 minutes or less.

      - Standing on tiptoes without pain: week 14.

      - Caring for my foot without worrying about tenderness - applying lotion, cutting toenails, exfoliating: week 16. My foot is still slightly tender on top around the scars; however, I am able to apply lotion and such as usual.

Hi I had a few complications last time ie a bone was fractured when pin put in.  I was off work for about eight weeks and although used my own trainers for driving I switched to the flat black boot for walking about.   I still get twinges in that foot but so, so much better than before op.  I think the most important thing is follow all the advice you are given.   This is a major op - as I kept getting told!

Iris, thanks! That does give me a timetable of sorts to go by. I’m week 9, so sounds like I have another month or so to turn the next major corner, then continuing from there. I know patience is the key.

I agree with Iris... same amount of time for me as well. I’ve had two surgeries on that foot years ago... and it still hurts, but I feel that’s because I was given NO instructions on how to exercise or any PT. My ROM is horrid, and I’m hoping to ask my new surgeon if he can someday (not anytime soon as I’m only 3 weeks out in this one!) fix my left foot, because it still hurts. One thing my surgeon told me this time, that for me is important, is to rub my scar (when it’s closed) in circular motions to get the scar tissue moving around. On my left (old surgeries) foot, when I touch the scar now i can’t feel too much, or it feels “out of place”. So for sure I’ll be doing that with these scars! I have already been doing it a bit, but it’s not totally closed yet so I’m not aggressive, and I can feel it :-)

as I had work today, and yesterday, I’m sooo tired!! I wore my daughters tennis shoe on my “good” left foot, and I use the knee scooter for the recent one, I had severe pain on the ball of my foot ( is that the part on the underside, just below the toes?)  . and I had to put my slip on Tom shoe back on. I was bummed. I’ll be needing some good supportive shoes when I’m done with the scooter, and I just know I’m going to have a heck of a time with both feet.

Wow, super notes!!! thanks wish I had done that years ago. I will do it this time! thanks! so did your ROM get better  and better because you kept doing excecises until that time? Plus of course your regular activities I’m sure helped. Just curious how long you kept up on the exercises.

I just got in the mail today my “scar tape”. It said from many reviews that it could be applied to old scars and keloids, and I have both, so I’m anxious to try it and see if it works as well as most said. And of course I’ll use it on my recent bunion scars, after the steri strips finish falling off.

Good morning, all! Wow, lots of activity on here last night. We are early risers, and I work at home, so I tend to be on here while most of you are at work, it sounds like.

Dona, my doc did not tell me the name of my procedure either, but it sounds the same as yours (3 incisions--1 large, 2 screws, non-weightbearing...). My billing last time said: Lapidus Bunionectomy Hallux. I was surprised when I saw the X-ray of my screws, and they crisscross from foot to back and back to front in the top of my foot. My doc did not actually give me the option of  having the screws removed, because I do not think they like to unless it is necessary. He told me that he could when I asked because of my metal allergy. He also did not give me any exercises or PT. I had to figure out everything on my own. I called the office yesterday morning because I wanted to make sure some stretches and exercises I started are safe, and I am still waiting for a return call. I do yoga, and I am physically active, so yes, last time, I continued with foot stretches and such on my own, and my ROM on my first (left) leg and foot is pretty close now to what it had been before the surgery. Thank you for sharing the info about rubbing the scars. I have been applying Aquaphor, which I will apply in a circular motion now.

Lulu and Ann ~ Have a great time on your trips! I just received a sale flyer in the mail from JCPenny yesterday, and now I am getting sandal fever, too.

I got the JCP flyer too :-) my screws are crossed too. I didn’t do any ROM exercises yesterday and now I feel like my foot tightened up. Bruising is almost gone! still have some steri strips hanging on for dear life.

I never knew knew when ppl said the doctor took their screws or pins out, that it was literally sticking OUT of their foot! oh, I would freak if I had a part sticking out of my foot for weeks! I was wondering how they got the screws taken out (like ours are)- how would that be possible?? duh! lol.

I’ll have to see what my bill says, I’m sure it is on its way!

Yoga is so helpful in total body recovery. I wish I did it more often.

Sounds like we had the same procedure and the same kinda Drs, Dona (no info, exercises, or PT). I finally received a call back from the office yesterday, and now I hope my exercises, or lack thereof, will not set me back any. Not sure if I mentioned that the other doc in the office had suggested I get a non-weightbearing boot instead of a cast this time... So, that is what the doc gave me, with no information (only that I could take it off to shower seated, after I asked).

I had also been taking it off to do floor exercises several times a day; quite vigorous ones: leg lifts and bends, ankle rotations and bends, and toes, of course. I wanted to do more, so that is why I had called the office; to ask about some others. The gal who called back initially told me I could do 2 of the 4 I asked about. Then at the end, she said I needed to be doing them with the boot on! It is not even possible to do the stretches and such that I asked about with a boot on my foot and leg. Not sure if they were not listening to my questions, or what. My foot was kinda sore the evening before she called me back, so, considering that and their reply, I have cut back some on what I was doing.

      lulu

what are you doing to help keep the swelling down mine seems to swell later in the day any thoughts

    • Posted

The non weight bearing boot.... I wonder if that’s the same as my Velcro shoe? No, mine is literally a wedge like shoe.

if so, my nurse told me at my post op appt. I could take the shoe off as much as I wanted, and to take it off for exercises and sleep. So basically I just have it on when I’m riding around on my scooter and think I may fall or something. I still get that feeling that my bones are being “splayed” out and maybe need some kind of support.  But I have no clue! Like compression socks? Or is that a bad thing, oy! then the more I look online for answers the more confused I get. Lol

Exercise in the boot??? In my Velcro shoe I can only wiggle my toes, so that doesn’t make sense! How frustrating!

I had the boot the first surgery, but I didn’t take awesome notes like you, and I believe I could hobble around on it, it was more of on my heel? and that was after several weeks of a scooter with a cast on.

Im still wondering if I should be doing more exercises or not. Are you able to email anyone? I only got a response from my very first email from the nurse.

      Hi all!

Lulu, I am 2 ½ weeks post op.

Dona, I had a cast last time. This time it is a boot that goes all the way to my knee, and sticks out 3” past the end of my toes.  My doc says absolutely no weight for 6 weeks. He said I cannot even put the bottom of my foot flat on the floor with my knee bent on my back to exercise. And, I have to wear it to bed. It weighs 2 ½ lbs!

    • Posted

Oh yikes!!! That is a lot of bulk to lug around and try and sleep in! I hope you figure out the exercises. I just messed the nurse again asking my questions. We shall see if she ever answers!!
    • Posted

Wow, you are going to be driving, Dona? Didn't you say you are the same time frame as me -- 2 ½ weeks?

    • Posted

Ann,  mine swells too? I only ice it for about 15 minutes and get off it. I don’t think there is anything much to do. The PT said when sitting, raise it up and move your foot back and forth. That gets the lymphatic system moving the fluids. Sometimes I do that then put my hand around my foot and “smooth” it up down towards the leg...make sure the foot is higher than the leg when you do that.
    • Posted

Iris, at 2.5 weeks, I’m not sure you should be doing foot exercises...or do you mean just leg?  When I started leg exercises at 3 weeks, I just did different lifts from the side, the bicycle movement in the air, got on hands and knees...foot off the mat, at did bum exercises, some yoga poses...nothing where the foot touched the floor. But I wasn’t in a cast.

Yes, I think so? I’m experiencing major brain fog again! I keep thinking, how much longer????

The nurse told me if I felt comfortable enough to push the pedals, I could drive to work but still no weight bearing. So I’ll have to have help to the car, and when I get to work to get out of the car. And still use scooter as I do now. I have NO clue how I did it last time, but as long as my neighbor helped me get my scooter in the car for work, I was able to get it out myself and get into work! it was my left foot then, and I was younger! but looking back I deserved a medal! Or a smack!

I get frustrated when I think I’m not improving :-( I think I’m trying to figure out too much all at once, and I’m just overwhelming myself. Hard not to look online when there isn’t much else to do!

    • Posted

Yes, those are the leg exercises I have been doing, Lulu (foot not touching the floor either). The toe ones are bending my toes back and forth (doc said I could do that). One thing he said I could not do after I asked, is to push them against my fingers (resistance). The ankle exercises I quit doing because my foot felt sore after 5 days, and then the nurse/doc told me I had to wear my boot (I did not talk about the ankle exercises with them or ask that, specifically). I cannot rotate or flex my ankle back and forth with the boot on, so I quit those. I was doing the ankle exercises, because I am pretty sure they told me I could flex and rotate my ankle last time though...as much as was possible in a cast, that is.

Different experience for me this time, for sure!

    • Posted

Iris, my doc also said to move ankle back and forth and it really felt like it hurt my foot and I stopped. I don’t regret stopping, either. I do it now to get fluid moving in lymphatic system.

Dona, you didn’t see the screw sticking out because they would always rewrap it very bulky at each Checkup. But I did peek when it was unwrapped. There was a rubber tip on it. I mainly felt it when I would try to place my foot over to that side. Sometimes i could tell and it bothered me, sometimes it didn’t. I was really scared about the pain when he took it out at 4 weeks, but I never felt hardly a thing! I was so relieved. Not sure how it works when the pin has been placed permanently and they take it out.

I have overdone it the last week and now am paying for it. I’ve been up more than done, walking in the treadmill every other day, doing things with my son home from springbreak. Now I feel my bones hurt all over and the muscles on the top of my foot up to the ankle are sore. I’m going to have to stay off of it the next few days to heal and take ibuprofen, baby it. And here I thought I was doing so well.

I go to PT today, and don’t see them doing much exercising, but rather masssging and working foot manually. Thankfully insurance covers it.

I find if I skip a day of my ROM exercises, my toes really stiffen up.

I also have plantar fasciitis, and try to find sandals with arch support. Just ordered some bionic fir $100 yesterday from Zappos. I have a similar pair from dsw for $34, but can’t realky walk in them far. They are more just going to a restaurant sort of shoe, I hate spending that type of money one basic sandals, but oh they feel wonderful!

im getting tired of this waiting game to heal.

Ann, I do this one exercise that might help you and your toe. I stand with the good foot in front of the bad, like you are going to walk..not directly in front of it, and not spaced too far.

Then you just just sort of rock the feet back and forth, coming up on your big toe, then rock back. Do that 15 reps, twice.

Hi Dona, Lulu, Ann, Jane, and all!  Just checking back in w y'all!  Definitely lots of activity here since last week.

The 📷 event last Wednesday turned out well!  It was my first time behind the wheel [7wk post op] so I was a bit nervous when initially pulling out of the driveway.  It was a breeze once I got through our subdivision and out w the traffic.  I wasn't such a metal foot as I used to be though. 😬😊 Just more careful and not too much a risktaker as before surgery.  So during the event I was on my feet for most of the 4hrs w only about 15-20 minutes on my bum when uploading images then we were on our feet again.  One of the things my Dr told me during my 6wk post op appt was to be cognizant of how my surgical foot hits the ground moving forward now that I'm out of the air cast boot and to land heel-ball-toe slowly w short strides. And the strides will lengthen in time as my muscles and joints get used to working together again.  When I don't, my gait is all messed up and I'm limping.  So that's what I did that night.  I was a lil' slow but having that in mind while moving helped my gait for sure.  At the end of the night, I elevated my foot at home as my whole foot felt tired and swollen.   The following 2 days, my calves were feeling the pain big time.  I regretted not doing stretches when I got home.  On Saturday, we dusted off the mountain bikes and went only about 5 miles on mostly flat surface.  Wanted to explore more for maybe a total of 10 miles as before, but hubby was tired.  Foot was fine but I elevated still upon getting home and massaged it was EOs which is always soothing.

I've been slacking off a lil' these last few days on my ROM and notice the difference.  So I'm back at it again w full force on the ROMs and including lower leg exercises to strengthen my ankles and calves especially now that there are plans to fly back out to CA for our daughter's Gadsby-themed engagement party.  Y'all can imagine the stress in trying to find the right shoes that are decent looking for such an event and, more importantly, that are comfortable.  So I placed a few online orders during a good sale.  I'm normally a size 9-9.5M in sneakers, and 8.5M in heels/sandals, but ordered 9's.  Foot was able to squeeze in comfortably into a pair of closed toe mary jane platforms - Sofft Monique Platform Mary Jane Pump w 3.25" heel ($49.97 Nordstrom Rack sale).  These seems to work for the occasion/theme especially w the strap to secure my foot in.  I don't think I'll be in these for the whole day/night though.  Dr said 3hrs max in heels moving forward.  Will have some flats w me just in case.  Also ordered a nice open toe strappy 3.25", Naturalizer Kinsley Dress Sandals ($62.30 Macy's sale).  This pair is still on the way, but hope these could be another option.  With either of these, I plan to use my CicaTape over my scar which helps camouflage it and actually stays on.  Thank goodness for 90 day return policies should these not work.  Would be interested to know what pretty shoes and sandals y'all are able to get into, for how long, and at what point in your recovery (6wks, 8wk, 3mos, etc).

@Dona: The compression socks my Dr recommended prior to my surgery are made by Injinji.  Injinji primarily makes toe socks, but the compression version doesn't compress the toes; just the foot and calves.  I wore the compression sock on my non-surgical foot at my 2wk post op appt, and Dr said I could put on the other pair before leaving since I had them w me.  I was too scared to though since my stitches were just removed at the time and didn't want to mess w or move my steri strips.  So I threw those back in my purse, and the nurse bandaged me up w compression dressings instead, then I put on another pair of Injinji no-show socks that weren't so tight and that kept my toes warm from the cold.  These compression socks are super tight and they do help w keeping the swelling at bay.  However, I didn't use them on my surgical foot until my incision fully healed and all scabbing were gone (4-5wks post op).  Also, I practically replaced most of my socks w Injinji toe socks, mostly no shows.  After going through my sock drawer after surgery realized most were tight in the toe area.  Also, the Injinji toe socks seem to work best for me in combination w the Correct Toes.  Using that as a non-surgical approach w my other foot that has a minor bunion, but hopefully not for long!

Cheers to y'all for a speedy recovery!! 👣😉

Hi Ria and everyone! That is great you have your driving freedom back! It’s a wonderful feeling, isn’t it? For some reason I thought I wouldn’t drive for months, so was pleasantly surprised how quickly it happened.

I am 10 weeks post op exactly today. I find that I’m walking well itself (not 100%, but more like 80%), as far as my gait. But I’m still more swollen than I thought I would be at this point. It fluctuates during the day. Sometimes I think I do to much, and my foot is really sore on top. I think I need to put my foot up more often than I do now. I also feel very stiff if I don’t do my ROM exercises daily. I guess I’m a bit frustrated with the swelling overall.

i still can’t wear any of my shoes. I’m still wearing my ugly grey Propet travel shoe and a black Maryjane style athleisure shoe. That’s my fancy one if I go out somewhere nice, haha! At times when the swelling is down, I fit in one bootie I own, but I’m too scared to wear it out in case my foot swells.

My doc told me I can wear any shoe I want at 11 weeks...but it won’t matter if I can’t fit in anything. I am very ready for sandal weather! Those I fit into, of course!  I had dinner last night with my friends and they all showed up in sneakers....lol...love those gals!

Im surprised you can fit into closed toe shoes.,,you must have minimal swelling. Have fun at your wedding. We are heading on vacation in May, so I’ll be in sandals at least by then.

Do you wear compression socks just in the house? If you do, do you find it helps with ongoing swelling?

Since relocating to the south 6 years ago, I found that most folks out here don't wear heels.  I've also lost the desire to wear high heels, except on special occasions.  Then again, it's likely due to the foot pains I was getting because of my bunions.  So lately prior to surgery it's been mostly low heel booties/boots or flat casuals/sneakers.  I'm surprised too that I could get into some heels now.  The ones in the closet are painful so had to buy some new ones that were comfortable to be in.  I'll be 10.5wks post op by the time our daughter's engagement party rolls around.  So I'm hoping my swelling won't arise as much then.  God-willing, it'll be a painless event.

As for the compression socks.,,, yes, I wear them primarily here when at home and solely for swelling.  It definitely makes a difference w keeping the swelling down.  I use the updated version of over-the-calf compression socks by Injinji.  So it covers the whole lower extremity of my leg.  Can't imagine compressing only my foot while calf bulges. 😬  I haven't tried on my surgical foot while out and about, but will do so for a meeting this Friday evening.  And will let you know how that works out.

I just know you're going to have a blast on vacation in May.  Y'all are heading to Hawaii, right?!  What island?  Hubby and I had our honeymoon in Kauai.  Such a beautiful island!! 🌴

Thanks, Ann!  It's fun shopping for new shoes/sandals, isn't it?! 😆🙃😉  I'm not quite 100% either at 8wks+2days today.  But I'm hopeful that at 10.5wks post op when the engagement party rolls around (April 6th) I'll be 110%. 🤞🏼😁 When trying on the said heels here at home, it's a lil' struggle to walk long in, but it's doable.  So hopefully I won't have as much swelling by April.  Maybe I'm getting ahead of myself or too hopeful, but the flats will be within reach just in case. 😉👊🏼

BTW, you're going to Hawaii too, right?!  Did you say you'll be 10.5 weeks when you go?  And what kind of flight socks are those you mentioned?  Are they like compression socks?  You'll have to let us know how your trip goes!!  Fun-fun!!

Hi ladies!  I am 9 weeks out and am in a boot now.  I have also recently started physical therapy.  This is surgery on my second foot.  The problem that I find I am having is that my feet were so bad for so long that now that they are fixed, my legs (muscles) have to get used to walking the correct way.  Just had pt today and am in a lot of pain.  Just sent my son out for x strength tylenol as the ibuprofen is not helping.  Is anyone else having these difficulties.  I began the ROMs as soon as I could, so my motion is really good.  After pt or walking a distance or standing for a time, I am exhausted and my foot is swollen.  I cannot believe some of you are driving---that is so awesome!  No driving for me for a while, but, it will happen.   Just need some support from you guys!!!  Thanks in advance!!!

All., I wore compression socks for the first time when we went to Italy 3 years ago. My feet and ankles weren’t swollen at all when we got there. However, I didn’t wear them home, because I didn’t care if I was swollen back home for awhile. But this time, with surgery, I’m wearing them both ways. They were snug of course, but I didn’t find them uncomfortable. They also kept my feet warm, and I’m always chilly on planes. I think mine were 15 pressure units (or however they measure). You are actually supposed to ask a doctor what you should wear.

I have some cute walking sandals in silver and Black I’ll be wearing, but I’m on the hunt for some taupe/beige/gunmetal color...basically a neutral. I have plantar fasciitis, so I’m looking at the sandals from The Walking Company. It kills me to pay those prices, but I needs ones to walk miles. I save my cheaper ones just to go out here and there for the evenings, etc. it’s hard to find cute and functional, but I think I do a fairly decent job.

My stitch bruises are still there. I say they have only lightened 50% in the last week. When I run my foot with Shea butter and massage it, it seems they look darker for awhile.

Tami, I’m sorry you are having issues with your muscles learning to walk, I’m glad you are going to PT. I find ibuprofen neve4 helps with pain, just extra strength Tylenol. I find ibuprofen only helps with muscle swelling, (not fluid though).

Hey all! I’ve been wondering how everyone was doing!! Ria, so glad the event was a success! hope your calves are feeling better now!

On Sunday I  attempted to drive. It was a no go though because I still have quite a bit of bruising on the bottom of my foot. I also have it around my ankles. I’m starting to wonder if they used a clamp of some sort during surgery. I tried using a slipper for driving at first. It is a pretty sturdy, secure slipper. I also used one of my husbands sandals with Velcro on it, and that seemed the best. Hideous, but sturdy. It’s hard to try and not use toes to drive! I felt like I was driving for the first time ever! I even used my turn signal to get out of driveway. Lol! no sense in pushing my foot to go all the way to work, then try and actually work if it will be sore from driving. I’ll try again this Sunday.

On the compression socks you wear now, are they toe socks as well? I love how specific you are, and I find myself going to Amazon to see what you mean. Holy expensive!! So I want to make sure I get the correct pair. I not usually a toe sock lover, but  that also could be from the fact that my bunion starting to loop over my second toe. I am interested in getting a pair though as they seem to really help a lot of people.

A Gadsby themed engagement party! how neat! Oh I want to see pics! And I’ll be looking up the shoes you mentioned ;-) we are the same size! If you ever have any shoes to get rid of, Iet me know before donating! I still haven’t gone to an actual store to look at shoes. I’m going to try to go to DSW soon to look at them, since it’s a wide open store, and they may have many brands that I’ve heard are decent. A lot of ppl say Sketchers helped, so I’m hoping to find a pair of those for the time being, and then I will invest in a more expensive pair once the swelling is done. I can fit my foot into my Bobs now, but I don’t think that’s supportive enough, and it’s a bit of a tight fit, so no way! I tried putting it on my Columbia boots yesterday before work, and my foot wouldn’t bend properly to get in. I think I will need some lace ups so I can work with them. I also heard the ugly crocs work? But I dunno about those. I have a pair of the sandals that I love, but the ugly original ones... I guess if they are comfy, I may try, but holy ugly!

The doctors office called yesterday and want me to come in after my sending the nurse a message with all of my questions. I’m looking forward to it, I really want to make sure I’m doing the ROM exercises right, as I still feel I’m not... and I’ve slacked off on it because of that. When I do them, the part where my bunion stuck out really gets sore, and I believe that part was fused, so I imagine the worst of course, thinking I’m damaging it. But maybe thats the normal feeling I should be getting. I just want clarification and I’ll start up full throttle. My toe has for sure gotten stiffer since not doing them. :-( So i. Glad I don’t have to wait until my April 12 appt.

I have been going into work on Mondays and of course overdoing it but I find myself recovering quicker. I noticed it’s easier to take a day in between working so I go back in on Wednesday to do everything that I can’t do from home and then spend the rest of the week at home. But is definitely improving over time. I still find myself only being able to work no more than six hours on Monday and less if I go back in without a day break in between. My FIL  has been driving me. He knows the drill now LOL. He picks up my whole body, I turn around and he puts both of his arms under my armpits and lifts me into his truck. It is quite the site I’m sure :-) he will be gone to Oregon visiting my sister in law next week. I had someone else take me yesterday, and I had to do most of the work. I wa even able to get my heavy box, purse, cup out on the porch using my scooter before he got there! I guess we do what we need to do when it calls for it.

Im 4 weeks post op yesterday. I did  take a tumble last night. It was my first yet and of course I jinxed myself by saying earlier in the day I was shocked I hadn’t somehow stepped on that foot. With my first surgery I did it right away. I was getting up from the couch and my scooter was a little too far. I got caught up in the bazillion  pillows that I have that I still need to make me comfortable and I started to go down. I did feel my foot flat on the floor, but I think that was when I first stepped off, and it wasn’t full force. I did land on my opposite knee and arm. Scared myself and my hubby! of course I cried, not from the pain, but because I was dissatisfied I myself. But I got over it. My spirits are much better lately. Glad I’m over that!

I saw on the FB bunion page ppl saying ibuprofen slows the healing process??? I’ve been taking that daily! I don’t think it helps much, and actually got out the Tylonel extra to take if I feel the need today. Still doing my ice machine, and also the heating pad.

Taking it easy today for sure!

      Tami,

I know I will have to get used to working correctly again once I can do it. I’m only at four weeks now and still wear the Velcro shoe with no weight-bearing. I haven’t walked correctly in years as I have had bunions since I was a teenager. 30 years walking wrong can’t be good... I think I walk a lot on the outer edge of my foot.

When I go back to the nurse and Monday I’m really going to try and Push and get physical therapy now. When I mentioned it at my two week appointment she said we would talk about that later when I was walking. I want it now! I know how important it is because I did nothing with my left foot and I still have major issues and no range of motion. And that scares to me death! So glad your ROM is good!

thank goodness for this site! I would have no idea about most of these ideas, tricks, shoes. I’m very grateful to all of you :-)

hi Iris! first drive was a fail. Lol. But it’s fine. I have too much bruising still on the bottom of my foot. I’ll try again this Sunday :-)

So glad you have the shoe now! so I imagine it’s like mine. I’m still NWB as well. I do have an appointment with the nurse on Monday which I’m looking forward to so I can really ask her my questions instead of waiting until my April 12 appointment. I really need to start moving my toe!

I’ll bet you were sleeping better now! And not having to look that big heavy boot around has to be such a relief. I bet your foot felt like air :-)

I also feel the need to say that I use a microphone the majority of the time I talk and I’m not very good at making sure the grammar is correct and spellchecking. I have noticed when I do catch something after I’ve already posted I don’t seem to be able to edit it. So apologies for any errors or you may have to sound out words at times to know what I’m saying LOL.

Sorry your driving day did not work out, Dona. They cut my foot a bit different; 2 long incisions. I have been using Aquaphor on mine. It looks like our scabbing is at a similar stage, although I do not have any skin peeling.

I actually have 3 incisions. Between big toe and second, top of foot and the side. The side one where the boney bunion stuck out still feels odd to the touch. I’m so used to a huge bone there!

      Hi Ladies,

?I have been to almost every shoe shop in a 20 mile radius of my  house and cannot find any shoes I can wear.  I have found sandals with Velcro  fasteners, so I could loosen and tighten them but they are no good  at the moment. I go back to my second job in two weeks I hope, but unless the swelling miraculously goes I will be in slippers and odd ones at that! I went  to a welfare meeting on Monday and was asked when I 'hoped' to go back to work, I said I was hoping to be fit enough to go back on the  9th April, ok so far? I looked at my emails today, and have two review meetings about students I haven't seen since December on my second day back ! How I am supposed to write a report on them, to present to their parents, employers and sponsors I

?shudder to think especially wearing odd slippers. Like you Ann I have a phased return, half days for 2 weeks then back into the throes of the College life. All the messages on this chat line make me think 'Is there an opening there for some of us enterprising ladies to manufacture shoes suitable for the months post op?'  We could do different shoes for each occasion, ie walking shoes, general shoes and pretty shoes. If I were a little younger I would research it. I have two other shopping centres to try and if I find some shoes I can wear I will post the name on here. Hope we all get a speedy recovery and a lovely summer, our forecast is snow for Easter! What did he say in that film? take baby steps. BTW Ann, I was shocked when I saw my consultant last Thursday, He showed me my Xray and said I had a plate and 7 permanent screws!! eek! I didn't think my foot was big enough for that many screws, one long one through my big toe joint and six holding the plate across the bone below the toe (bunion area). Hope you are all enjoying a bit of sunshine we are atm. Janet

Wow sole mates! Lol. I took the Cica tape off of my left one to take that pic. You can see the lines from it around where I place it over old scar. It’s working for sure!!! I’m shocked as it’s such an old scar! But it has lost thickness for sure!!

Ann, I put them on as we are waiting to board the plane. They are a tight fit and it might not be comfortable doing it on the plane with so little room.

Even had our feet done in the same order! The scar on my left foot is so visible, because that is the new incision when they took my screws out 4 weeks ago. Looking at my photos from last year, it looks like they made the new incision in the same spot as last  time.

Tami:  Sorry you're experiencing a lot of pain.  Whenever working our muscles after a period of sedentary, we can expect to be in much pain and aches for the following 2 days.  My husband reminded me of this last week when I apparently over did it working on my feet for 4hrs.  Stretching helps but I rarely feel like stretching when I'm tired and spent.  Since then I've been trying to do some exercises for my calves and legs so they can jive w my foot once again.  Hope things get better for you.  I trust that they will. 😁

Ann:  The scar tape my Dr specifically recommended for me is called CicaTape by CicaSolution, $16.95US.  It comes in a box w one roll in the size of 1.76 inches x 59 inches.  Bought two rolls on Amazon w 10% off.  Though I understand that they're also available on PharmacyDirect[dot]com.

My scar treatment regimen is actually 3-fold...

CicaTape- used when I'm out and about w shoes on.  My Dr recommended this brand and type to me especially since my scar looked a little raised than normal during my 6wk PO appt.  It treats the scar and flattens it, and serves well as a protection layer from anything (socks, pants, shoe/sandal) rubbing directly on my incision.

EOs (essential oils)- I use 2 different blends interchangeably (noted below) to help regenerate skin cells, treat keloidal scars (old and new), and to minimize inflammation.  My Dr approved of these when I inquired and was happy to offer tips when using EOs.  I massage these in prior to doing my ROMs which helps to soften any stiff tissue near my big toe joint, and gently massage it in to my whole foot (top and under big toe joint, between metatarsals, arch, achilles, ankle, and top of foot @ the cuneiform bone where I still have some swelling from prior bone spur that was shaved off).  I won't begin to list the many benefits of each here or else this will become a long article, so you can do your own research and choose what works best and cost-effective for you.  These specific ones I use are considered the top of the heep when it comes to EOs for scar treatment and minimizing swelling.

🍯  Anti-Scar EOs Blend: Helichrysum, Frankincense, Geranium, and Rosehip as the carrier oil.

🍯  Refreshing Anti-Scar EOs Blend:  Lavender, Rosemary, Tea Tree, and Rosehip as the carrier oil.

Mederma PM-  I use this primarily at night and place a clean gauze right over it before putting on socks so it won't wipe off onto sheets at night.  I used to use a compression wrap instead of socks to hold the gauze in place, but it's been cold lately.

BTW, have fun in beautiful Cyprus!! 🏖 That will surely be a fun adventure for you!!

Found this from my second left foot surgery... looks like a staple on top? ! When I had the second one done he went in thru same incision as well. But nothing has been removed. I’ll be  interested to know what the surgeon thinks of my left foot when I get around to asking him about it. I wore a good pair of tennis shoes well one of them the other day and after several hours the ball of my foot hurt so bad I had to take it off. That is worrisome to me because how the heck am I going to find shoes that fit that foot with that issue in this new foot with new issues? I started looking up what pain in the ball of foot could mean... and I stopped. Oy!

Lulu:  I feel ya on the stitch bruising.  My incision is 4" long from big toe joint to the cuneiform bone.  And that part of my incision is still dark too.  My Dr said that's to be expected since our blood rushes to that area and makes our incision bloody red/dark as well as the surroundings.  Keep moving and massaging it w oil as it sounds like you have been.  The area eventually gets lighter apparently.  Hopefully sooner than later though, right?!.  Meanwhile, have fun sandal shopping!  Thanks for the tip on the Walking Company.  I've yet to check them out, but will now that you mentioned it.  You know, Macy's is currently having a 30% off sale using "VIP" code. 💸😁

Iris:  Congrats on getting into a surgical shoe!  Sounds like it's lighter than your previous boot.  Happy hopping! 😉

Dona:  Good hearing from you, girl! 😁 You had me chuckling out loud w your turn signal out of your driveway. 🤣  Did somewhat similarly last week looking over both shoulders 5 or so times.  It seems we're more protective and careful after this surgery, aren't we?!  During the event, even sometimes here at home w hubby, I'm conscious of how close people get in fear they might step on my foot and I'm ready to push them outta my way. 😬😁  Hey, we gotta do whatever's necessary when it comes to shoes or slippers, whether hubby's or ours! ??  I sport my hubby's UGG slippers around the house and [don't laugh😆] slipped in my blue superfeet shoe inserts inside those for arch support. 🤓 Whatever works, right?! 😜🙃??😊

Yeah, the Injinji compression socks aren't cheap.  That's for sure!  And, yes, they are toe socks.  Back in January, I found that REI had a sale on the new compression version for like 25.9% off but they didn't have my size M available or the colors I preferred.  BTW, they have some really fun colors and styles which has helped brighten my days/nights during this recovery.  So I chanced it and boldly called Injinji directly to see if they'd do a price match and they agreed/approved, and within seconds they gave me a discount code for 25% off to use on their Injinji website.  No tax and no shipping charge either!  And the code is good for everything in your 🛒 cart, including sale items.  I looked into their competitors and other alternatives at similar or lower prices but the reviews weren't to my satisfaction, nor were they toe socks.  Plus, I trust my Dr's judgement and recommendations since he's an athlete and uses them himself, on top of being the senior surgeon, his credentials, etc.  Let me know if you want that discount code and I'll PM you.  With this type of surgery, I just didn't want to compromise on the recovery portion and so went w Injinji despite the cost.  Plus, they work well w Correct Toes for my minor bunion on LT foot which I'll not go under the knife for.

Glad to hear you're getting to see your Dr sooner than later.  It's always best to get all our Qs and concerns clarified and addressed w them.  Will keep you in prayer for wisdom for your Dr, that he gives you the green light w PT, and for peace and healing for you and your foot. From the looks of your photos recently posted, your scars actually look good.  I'll need to spend a moment to figure out how to post photos.  Been documenting my recovery w weekly photos on my progress.  It helps to see where we were at and how far along we've come.  Just wish the healing and swelling would subside faster and completely vs in 6-12 months.  It's definitely a slow process though that I'm learning to be patient with. 😊

As for shoes, I've never been a fan of crocs or sketchers and don't think I will begin to.  Lace ups seem to work better at this point vs slip ons when it comes to closed toe shoes.  Right now, my go-to closed toe casuals have been my outdoors shoes [Astral TR1 Trek M's] since late last year.  I actually picked up the mens version in size 8 (equivalent to womens 9/9.5) cause I wanted a neutral color (grey w red markings) and not the colors the womens version offered.  Dr approved of them back then and for post op since they have a zero drop between heel and toes, and the toe box is accommodating.  Originally got them this past Fall season to replace my water shoes for kayaking but have been pleased with them that I don't want to use them for that purpose.  They served me well last week for the event too and each of my post op appts.  Also just received additional tennis shoes via REI.com to change things up.  Got the Topo Athletics MT2s w similar specs (low drop, wide toe box).  Haven't worn them out and about yet, but will do so over the weekend.  It's been cold lately, even hit freezing temps last night, so I don't mind the closed toes.  I'll need to paint my toe nails soon before wearing open toes.

Ibuprofen is definitely a no-go during this time and they were explicit w that on my post op papers.  Unfortunately there had been times I've used Advil for pain but stopped when realizing it had ibuprofen.  The Rx was too strong early on and so stopped that after 4-5 days PO.  Haven't really needed anything lately.  Tylenol extra strength seems to be what majority are using here.

You're blessed to have family and loved ones nearby to help you get around!  Keep your spirits up, girl!  You have lots to be grateful for!  And no more falling either!! 😉  Hope you're doing better though and that your weekend is even better. 🙂

      Ann,

Are you asking me about having my screws removed? I think I had the same procedure as Dona: cut and realigned my foot bone on top, and 2 permanent screws were placed criss-crossed from front to back (which is why we are non-weight bearing); also had part of the bone on my bunion shaved off. The screws usually stay in, but I have a metal allergy, and the top of foot was always irritated, so I asked doc to take them out when he did my second foot.

      Hello all!

Dona: Am I reading that right? You had your left foot operated on twice? Wow, that must have been miserable. And, that is some hardware in your foot! It looks like you have more screws than me, and it looks like they are placed different, too. I saw my X-ray, but do not have a copy. Think I will ask for that on my next visit in 2 weeks.

RiaLT: Yes, the shoe is soooo much nicer! I couldn't believe how difficult it was to do anything wearing a boot that went to my knee and weighed over 2 lbs. Much worse than a cast.

Ann: I guess my procedure was not quite the same as Dona's. Looks like she has way more screws than I do!

That shot is from my first and second surgeries with the podiatrist years ago. I believe he didn’t do something right (either time) and did all that the second time trying to fix it. But that’s a guess and I’m over guessing. I’ll never go back to him, and chose this ortho surgeon from friends recommendations.

In my recent right foot, it’s just the two screws in the middle of my foot and pie shape taken out of bone from the side scar. So I think it’s the same this time.

Im going to take a pic of this current surgery when I can, hopefully on Monday.

Good morning all, I have been experiencing discomfort in my big toe at the outer edge. It seems I’m building up a callus again after all my skin peeling and I can feel it now in the one pair of sneakers I wear. I also notice i don’t seem to have the same flexibility in my big toe and it hurts when I do the forward bend. I’m disappointed in that. Also, the muscles hurt on the top of my foot, especially at the end of the day. I wonder if I’m just doing too much? I guess I don’t feel I’ve recovered significantly, other than my gait, in the last month. I’m sure I have, perhaps it’s just not noticeable. I don’t see my doc for another month and only have 3 more PT sessions.

Hi Ann, thanks for that, I tried Clarks but the only shoe which I could get on they didn't have in my size. I am just going to have to get sandals and if the foot is cold tough. I think I have discovered what has caused the infection though - when I had my bath this morning, I saw a blackish dot on the scar line, closer examination and several hours later (the foot is again like a balloon) the dot is one of the screws! It is raised and looks like it will split the nicely healed scar. I think that is what has caused the discomfort when trying shoes on. I have rung the local hospital, but because I had the op at a private hospital I have to wait till next Thursday to see the consultant, god forbid that they need to operate again. you ladies are much cleverer than me I don't know how to put pictures or emoticons on here. Ann I am so jealous, I love Cyprus, which part are you staying in? The thought of lovely sunshine is wonderful. Enjoy it. Janet

Here is my foot from front and side. The bruising is from the stitches. The line on the left is not an incision, but marks still, left from the stitches. The bottom circle is where the screw came out. I was expecting the bruising to be much lighter by now. The incision itself is not raised. I just got finished icing it, 10 weeks post op.

      Good morning, ladies!!

Lulu, you're not alone, girl!  I had pain and trouble w callouses under my big toe at the big toes metatarsal joint as well as at the proximal interphalange joint near the nail.  They limited me in my ROMs, especially the down position and was really discouraging.  Eventually I used a nail file, the rough side, to file the calluses down.  And whenever I'm in the shower would exfoliate both feet and use a pumice buffing bar and rub more in those trouble areas.  That seems to help.  Maybe try those two methods.

BTW, your scar looks amazing!  I can hardly see it!

Hope you feel better soon from the pain and bruising!! 👣

Hi Ann, I have just had a phone call from the hospital and I go back to see the consultant next Thursday. My doctor rang me and he has given me extra antibiotics to last till then. It isn't painful except for the swelling, no shoe hunt this weekend till the swelling goes down again. As you have all said, the waiting is boring! I hope you have a lot of fun on your holiday, Cyprus is lovely, try to hire a car and go to the other parts of the island, there are some beautiful areas. Plus you can rest your foot on a sun lounger, and get a lovely tan. Janet

?Hi Lulu, I would like to know how you upload pictures and emoticons too, think you American ladies are really switched on to all the technology.

I think your foot/scar looks great, too, Lulu!

Janet and Ann: the way to load pictures is to click on the far right box at the top when you are posting a reply. I took a snapshot of this reply, and drew an arrow to the box (picture below).

Yes please learn how to post pics! lol. Your foot sounds like it’s so pretty and comfy with all that TLC!!  I want to see if I can apply directly on my scar yet. It’s getting really itchy!

I had NO clue on ibuprofen!  and my hubby of course said that was false when I told him. I  always prefer to do everything as natural as I can and he always parks a little bit of fun at me for that. But after having been through some major stomach issues and learning but not all doctors are there to find the root cause it was a real eye-opener for me and I ended up finding a mentor of sorts to really help me naturally get better which I did fully :-)

I would love that code if you don’t mind. That is a pretty good percentage. I also use Ebates so maybe I can get a percent back too! yahoo! I love deals, and you sure find them! I would also like to make sure I’m getting the similar ones that you speak of. When I looked quickly it look like there were several different kinds. With that same brand-name.  I did ask my husband to take me to DSW like I said before but I think he is having issues with wanting to pay so much for a pair of shoes that I may not wear all the time. He needs to get on board! LOL. No sense in having gone through all this to destroy it with unfit shoes. I at least need one pair! I don’t think I will get the Crocs either because they are seriously ugly. The sandals that I have don’t look anything like crocs and I use them when we  go camping and take a shower then they never come off my feet yet I still am able to get clean :-)  I will have to go back and look Astrals. Someone also said HOKO shoes are really good.

Going to my MILS surprise bday party tomorrow so yahoo, I’ll be out and about and not at the docs or work for once! I’ll try not to fly around too hard on my scooter... though it is fun!

i will give it a try dont hold your breath it might take a while was it on your laptop

Also, I took a picture with my iPad, and then when I clicked that little book Iris showed you it asked where you want to pull your pictures from.

Also, I should have taken a pic of my other foot, as it then shows the swelling on my surgery foot .

I had PT today and he said I could quit pulling and pushing my big toe. That since I’m walking so much, thatbdoing that ROM exercise is overdoing it. That one is more firvwhen you can’t wslk, or aren’t walking much. He seemed surprised at my callous and thinks it’s my shoes, they may be too big now, toe is not hitting it properly and rubbing wrong.

I will start doing that, Ria. It is so ugly, and sort of dark. I think we are supposed to have some buildup on the big toe, or it’s normal, but not what I have.  They were so soft and pretty a month ago...haha.

Yes, Ann I loaded the picture from laptop. As Lulu said though, it does ask where to pull the picture from after you click on the icon.

So, a bit more detail: I had already taken a picture of my foot with my phone. I then found that picture from my laptop (my devices sync, so I can access my pictures from any device, no matter which one I used to take it), and clicked on it to load it.

Let me know, if this does not make sense.

Thanks Ria---I have just found this second foot to be a lot more painful---not the surgery itself but trying to get the muscles to work the correct way.  I think I just needed some encouragement.  This is just a lot of work which is not fun.  Thanks for the support!

I just looked at the Propet and Astral...nope. I can’t do it! I just can’t do it!! Lol. I have never been a fan of tennis shoes. I have always felt like they were too clunky and heavy on my feet. I’m sure that’s what I need in terms of suppprt of course. But, I just can’t  imagine paying for a pair of clunky athletic shoes like those . I know I won’t wear them :-( I’m a fan of lightweight and soft looking shoes... ugh! This will be a pickle for me. Clark’s and Merrell seem nice! I’m hoping to find something that I can Velcro... to accommodate the swelling, which is minimal, but I also haven’t started putting weight on it yet.

Oh boy... I’m more of a slip on and go gal. I really need to know how important the all over support is... like on the sides of my feet? I’m sure it’s pretty important, along with the sole. Oh grrr!!

Wow, Ann ~ those side stitches look hurtful. Did they have to cut those out? My stitches were dissolving stitches on the inside. They just had to snip the ends a few weeks after the surgery.

My Propet lace up was butt ugly. But it was the only one that I could find that was in an extra wide and lots of room at the top. My foot was really swollen at the top and balls of my feet. I couldn’t wear my regular wide sneakers. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do to get around with no pain. But if you have little swelling, you have more options.

Wow! You have really co e a long way. Your incision looks great. You aren’t even bruised!!
    • Posted

It just seems like SO.MUCH.SHOE! Is it heavy? In the end I will go with whatever gives me comfort for sure. I've never worn anything like that. Wish I had so it wouldn't be such a huge deal for me to try and grasp.

The Hotter brand seems nice and gets rave reviews! I'm in US though, so I can't try them out first. Anyone try those?

    • Posted

my stitches were dissolving ones it did look gruesome then but its not to bad now just still a little swollen yea lulu it feels like it was a long time ago no bruises now are you still bruised
    • Posted

They are extremely light weight. I did put my own orthotic in it, as the footbed is very flexible, not enough for me. They also make one without laces. I did get these at 4 weeks post op when it was extremely swollen. I wish I had got the black with white soles, would have looked better I think.

No, my bruises are gone, Ann. I had a lot of bruising this time; not much last year when I had my first foot done.

I think those shoes are cute, Lulu!

    • Posted

Ann and Iris, they would probably have been cuter if they weren’t a size 10 extra wide! Lol!

i think I know what’s wrong with the top of my foot. It really hurts and I’m limping. I think it’s extendor tendinitis. Damn. It says it could be from excessive exercise or overuse. I know with all the walking I’ve been doing, ROM exercises every day, I think I’ve done this to myself. I’ll call the doc Monday just to make sure.

It says take anti-inflammatorues, rest, ice, etc.  here we go again just sitting around!

I really like those!!!! I don't remember seeing those. I only remember the vivid colored ones. And thinking they are too athletic for me. Especially to work. Restored faith in Propet! To Google I go! Thanks! :-)

Woohoooo i’ve been signed off by hospital six weeks post-op and I can get my sketchers on.  Still odd twinge but that seems to be about it - cannot fault the NHS they have been amazing!

Hi Ann I’m in Glasgow.  I got my other foot done last year and had a horrendous time.  This time has been sooo different - different surgeon one of the best I’m told.   I think a lot depends on who does your op...

Dona, I got them at DSW. You know, now that I think of it, my sons 21 year old GF had something similar she made on Etsy. It was grey lace and she had white lace put on it, too. It was altogether big and not as roomy on top, but similar.

Which sketchers did you get? The go lite ones seem to be a fav. Congrats!

      That’s Great Jane!

Dies anyone not like the format of these boards? It’s hard to keep up with a certain string of post. I wish they would revamp it.

It’s rediculous! I find myself repeating myself a lot because I don’t know what ppl see where! And no edits! I make a lot of mistakes using the microphone a lot.

Dona, I’m glad I’m not the only one that finds it confusing. I also wish there were an edit button.

Went to DSW today!! Tried on SO many pairs of shoes that I had found online!!! Tried to shove my foot in a few i shouldn’t have too ;-) oh the sandals!!!! I wanted some so bad!!

But I have to be practical with the husband. He was super helpful and got out all of the shoes I wanted to try, as I used my scooter as a chair to try on. What a workout!

no New balance for me, surprisingly! the toes aren’t round enough, at least the ones they had. They had a lot I liked but not my size. Some I would just step into to see if maybe I’d like them before asking another store. I was suprised none of the Clarks fit good. One pair of the Sketchers was good. I learned I need something right now with laces, or I did find a pair of BZEES??? never heard of them!!! From Naturalizer it seemed, that I loved! I will be buying sandals from that brand when I can for sure!!

They had No Propets there, grr! alas I was determined to get a pair of those. Birkenstock... nope!

I  had a pair of Merrill’s that I narrowed it down to. Then I found Saucony!!! And holy moly! clouds on my feet!!! I had two pairs that I loved. By now I’m starting to sweat from scooting around the store, trying on shoes, them not fitting, taking layers of clothes off! (Nothing too daring though, I had worn layers! haha.

So my hubby brought over the several that I had said I liked, or maybe liked and I tried them all on again. Bless him, man I owe him for all he has done! At one point when I went to put my Velcro shoe on and move down the shoe line, I thought to myself, Yuck, this shoe is horrid, then realized it was my Velcro shoe. Ahah. By now my knee is hurting, I’m sweating, foot throbbing, kids are all staring at my scooter wondering how fair it was that I could ride my “toy” in a store. And I was going downhill fast.

I put those Saucony one back on, and my feet for the first time ever, ever!! My feet were engulfed in clouds :-) I didn’t even bother to try and find cheaper anywhere, etc. and they were very affordable! So I have one pair of shoes that will work! Hooray! I’ll have to wear them around house tomorrow to make sure. In the past, before surgery, I would think shoes fit good, but after a few hours they would feel so bad.

      I think these will Work!

Came me home and hooked up ice machine, treated bruised knee from scooter and am staring at my shoes :-)

That’s great, Dona! I did find  that DSW don’t carry Propet in the stores. It’s really amazing what a bit of swelling can do. Now you have a pair to wear! I was very limited as I’m a wide width normally, which are limiting. Trying to find an extra wide was laughable. I always love sandal season and summer  gladiators, as I can fit into anything!

Little by little. If I were you I wouldn’t spend anymore on shoes. Winter will be over soon, and we can all go crazy over those great sandals!

      hi ladies

I’m betting at 4 months, our feet will not swell as much. Enough to feel comfortable in sandals. I’m just bummed I think I have tendinitis on the top of my foot from doing too much walking, too many ROM exercises, not elevating enough. Basically just overdoing everything. I’ve been off mynfedtvalot and taking ibuprofen since Friday. Icing when I think of it. It’s feeling better, but I’ve set myself back a week or so, I think.

now, I’ll have to start walking again to build up and I’m not doing my ROM exercises so aggressively. I think they were better when I wasn’t walking so much.

Agreed! of course I wore the left (the “good” foot.lol)one today around the house, and I think it started to hurt in that middle ball part of my foot where all other trainers seem to hurt 😞 I can’t say for sure though, I was working from home today and even though I can put my foot up, after a few hours it’s just too much on my foot no matter what I do, and I have to return to couch for a bit. So I will take it into work with me tomorrow, and wear it. That will be the real test as I’m scooting around like a maniac on Monday’s :-) I sure hope it is fine! I’ll also show the doctor tomorrow, or Nurse as I’m sure I will probably never see the actual doc again, to ok the shoes and maybe she can give me some advice on what to do on that ball of foot. Oh these feet!!!

let me know what they say about the ball of foot i have discomfort there too

Ria- how are you doing? I miss your updates!

i did end up making the blends you provided me with, thanks so much! I love them!

Quite a  bit has changed foot wise for us, hopefully you’ve been able to get out into the world footloose and fancy free!

Im having some scar issues from soaking my foot in vit e and epsoms as the nurse said I could do. I not going to soak it any more for sure! And for now, nothing on it! I had started the Mederma and then thought I could use Cica tape too, but this issue needs to dry out, especially on the end of the top scar... I’m starting to wonder if it is infected. I was certain it wasn’t, but I’ll tske a pic and email the nurse tomorrow and hope she replies back.

Im going to quickly use some hibicleans on it and just rinse that off, maybe blow dry it :-)

i actually cut a hole in my sock earlier where the scar really needs to dry. Classy! But my foot gets so cold with no sock! I’ll have to see what I can do when I go out into the real world!

Hotter brand shoes, have you told me about these?! I’ve heard from several people that they are super. I have a special on ebates that ends tonight. I have 2 clearance ones in my cart now... just wonder about the sizing. I hear true to size so I’ll have to see... free returns is awesome too!!

I  do hope you are well and loving all of the shoes that fit you perfectly!
