Walking Boot Questions

Posted , 3 users are following.

So I  was lucky enough to get an aircast boot today with  WBAT instructions -  no need to wear boot to bed. For those of you who have moved to this stage  of healing , can you share your Process?

Are you keeping your boot on all day or only when you plan to walk?  How long are you walking on a daily basis? How did you know when you were ready to try walking without using a crutch or walker? How did you know when you were ready  for walking without the boot?

Being able  to put even a bit of weight on my injured ankle has been a Gift!  Look forward to hearing about your approaches

    Hi Zelda,

I am almost 10 wks. post injury of an ORIF broken fibula, dislocated ankle and torn ligaments.

I have had an air cast for a few weeks now and have only been able to weight bear up to 20lbs. as of last wednesday.  I was also told that I didn't need to wear the boot at night, but my ankle is still tender and I have a small screw backing out of my ankle, so I still wear the boot to bed to protect it while I sleep.

I keep the boot on unless I remove it to wash, air my foot or do my exercises to loosen up my ankle.

I have been walking up and down my hallway many times a day without any discomfort (I am captive, so can't walk outside) and since I purchased one of those evenup shoes, it has stopped making my hip ache and I am able to walk properly and reasonably comfortably .. as much as you can with that anchor on your foot!!

I am having the small screw and the two large screws removed next wednesday and then I will be able to put more weight on it, not sure how much as of yet.

Yes, I totally agree, it has been wonderful standing upright and moving around erect instead of sitting in a wheelchair constantly.

You are doing great in your recovery, it sure means a lot to know you are making good progress and every day you are closer to getting your life back.

Best wishes for a speedy path to walking without any aids  smile

Thanks Deb... wow you have been through a Lot!  Good luck with the screw removal ... hopefully it will help with your recovery.

I am pretty much captive too at this point... but we will getting some hand rails installed on my stairs soon so I can get downstairs more often. I ordered the even up shoe and it should come next week.
