Walking distance

Hi All

I am nearly 10 weeks post op from posterior uncemented ceramic on ceramic.

I don't use crutches and have been pain free and walking without limp and with correct gait for some weeks. Recovery going really well.....except....

I retired early and admit I spend most of my time relaxing and seeing to our large veg garden which I have a 5 minute walk to. I have no problems or pain walking there, doing hoeing, grass cutting, weeding with long handled hoe, watering etc, and then walking home. There is a slight slope just near home and this sometimes pulls on my legs.

Anyway I decided to try some longer pure walking only. After 10 minutes it becomes a bit uncomfortable in my hip area, not very painful but twingey. If I stand and rest for a minute or so I can then walk quite far again before twinge comes back. It doesn't alter my walking gait just makes me feel tired and slows me down.

My question is.....is this normal? Is this one of the things why full recovery can take such a long time?

Yes it's normal. I was very much like you in the same time frame. at 10 weeks you feel about 90% it was not until a year that I felt completely completely healed. I got odd twinges once in a while all through until the year mark.

It takes a LONG time to recover fully, I think it was about 18 months before I felt really back to normal.

Looking at my website blog, I was walking up to about 2 miles in town (so nice pavements, no slopes) at ten weeks, so you sound to be about on target.

Feeling tired is one of the main problems, you need to build your stamina slowly, and your 'walk - rest - walk' is probably as good a way to do it as any other way.

    Best wishes

      Thank you Graham.

Realised it's the continual repetative walking pace that causes the problem whereas messing around doing different things is ok.

Hi Sandra, I was the same at 10 weeks. You feel as though you're doing so well, and then you get achy. I was back at work part-time and feeling a bit tired, and then sometimes I was out with friends, walking a lot, and then feeling really tired! Now at over a year, I have so much more stamina. Just take it steadily.

    Hi Sandra,

I'm 14 weeks post op and like you I'm gardening etc... and like you I don't have any issue's with it, but walking far is quite tough I get tired out after ten minutes and sometimes have to stop, I go out every day for a walk for at least 20 mins or more, my main problem is muscular, my back and leg muscles are noticeably weaker and tighter than before the op and become very painful if I overdo it.

I didn't realise recovery would take so long I thought it was because I've become unfit and probably that's a part of it, but when you think of the operation itself its no wonder getting over it takes such a long time!

      Hi Lulu

I think you may be right that partly it's due to being unfit.

I thought I'd be able to walk at least into town on my holiday at 11 weeks post op but may have to get taxi one way or rest for a while in a bar 😃🍷.

Still loads better than pre op though and we will keep getting better.

      Sandra x
