Walking Distance Calculation?

Posted , 8 users are following.

Have been reading lots of comments here about post-op walking distances. Daunted!

How are people calculating these? Guesswork? Or technology?

I've recently acquired Fitbit Flex, which calculates steps/ distance walked. This, obviously, includes pottering around the house.

So, when people say, for instance, that they're walking a mile a day, are they including the pottering? Or technical 'walks'.

Can't speak for the others but I downloaded an app called Map My Walk which I use when I actually go for a walk. It tells you how far you've walked, how long it took and how many caliries you used though I think this last us very over optimistic! I found it helped because I coyld use it to compete wirh myself - set myself a target to go quarter of a mile further or do the same route more quickly. It also emails you weekly and monthly wirh you weekly and monthly totals and best if all? Its free!!

Thanks for this Rosie.  I've had various fitbits but I would love to Map a proper walk so will try this app next week and report back.  I don't do any formal walking at the moment but seem to be very busy, active and recovering well.  I guess the Fitbit could track walking around the house, shopping and working but a mapping app could track a proper walk.

As for me I use my Garmin that counts my steps. The total I come up with at this time is usually around the house but plan to start outdoor walking soon.

I just started by walking around the block then to the local shop. I found that if I gave myself a point of Origen just a little further each week I made my goal, but you must remember you will need to make it back home so don't push yourself to hard or you will not have the energy to get back home.

If some one goes with you and you get talking you will find it is a lot easer.

I already have the Niki Run app.  Good for walks, but not pottering.

    Hi!

I've a free health app on my Galaxy 5 phone, which does bp and steps and more.

So, i aim for 6,000 steps aday, includes pottering as well as walking: I reach this about 70% of the time, best being 18,000 steps and lots of rest and 2,500 steps next day!

    Cheers

Given I'm supposed to be resting, due to tendonitis in the groin, I've set (after much palaver) my goal to 1,500 per day.  But will be helpful to convert to distance.

Goodness me!! 18,000 steps !!  I've never even dreamt about doing this many.  That's some good going...

This point has been discussed on other threads.  I think it's exceptional and shouldn't be used as a comparison.  People have become really disheartened.

The recommendation for a fully healthy and fit person is 10,000 a day.

    Hi again,

At 5 weeks, 2,500 steps was about my average, at 5 months its about 6,000. suprising how many steps pottering round house, like 875 this morning clearing up after a dinner party!

And yes, 18.000 was exceptional, as was a TV rainy day yesterday at 2650 ! We all are different, but believe it is good practice, not disheartening, to aim for gradual improvement, just for ourselves, not stagnation, and lots of rest after an exceptional time!

    Cheers

Absolutely understand, Mic, because I've followed you. Merely concerned that people like Laura won't be aware of that context: as proven by her reaction.

I simply think we should be careful not to post extraordinary achievements which others could construe as the 'norm' in recovery.

      hello!

posting here extraordinary 'good' at 18K, and extrordinary mediocre at 2.65K. And I'm still a good way from the 10,000 'norm' the NHS recommends!!

how is the app going? are you finding quite a variation in steps too? I find if I'm about 5.2K in the evening I take the cat for awalk round the block!

      Ha!

Haven't had Fitbit for long enough to judge variations. I'm finding the website very user unfriendly, badly designed.

Well I would say, just walk to the shop, or so, an easy distance, and try to ease it out, untill that magical 12 week time has come and gone, and take it from there, just never do too much or you will pay for it for about three days afterwards, and the more you do the worse  the swelling on your ankles will become...Ian.
