Walking Unaided

I can walk well with one crutch and at the end of my walk can walk unaided when I am 'warmed up'. When I get up from my chair however it is difficult to walk in a balanced way. How long did it take to walk normally? (Week 6.5). Tony

I'm 13 weeks out and still using a cane on occasion.. But everyone is different. Friends in how much damage you had / type of surgery/ and overall health and fitness level. It will come.

I am 6 weeks on Friday and I still have pains in my thigh as I get up and my balance for the first couple of steps is rubbish

54 days (almost 8 weeks) .... and I still need a stick when I get up from a chair, for about 2 or 3 steps, then I'm OK around the house.

Outside, I wouldn't consider it without a stick.

I am 6 weeks this week, can now walkmwith one crutch a few steps without. Had physio today and she said i had come a long way but still have a long way to go, any one else having to stand on one legย

I was having twinges and pain trying the one legged balance, so my physio switched me to just standing on two feet, but shifting the weight onto the new hip.

It let me work on it for a few days, and now am more confident and comfortable on one leg

I too am at 6 weeks . Can't walk without a cane. Doing all exercises OK but hard to stand on operated leg.

I am just 6 months post op and my new hip is fantastic and has given me back my life, however even now after sitting for a while I struggle for the first few steps when getting up, it is the same when I first get out of bed so 6.5 weeks is nothing in recovery after such major surgery. Sounds like you are doing well and will get even better as time goes on.

Oh dear, I was hoping that the struggle for the first 3 steps would be a passing phase - seems like it may last for longer - anyone else?

I'm 7 1/2 weeks and still using one crutch. I can lurch from room to room without, but always use it when I'm out. When I first get up in the morning it takes me a while to get going and I'm very achey and sore. I always feel as though my leg needs oiling! Once I get going, it eases. I don't have any physio or exercises to follow (policy from the hospital I attended) so I'm just walking when I can.

My op was 28 Oct, I do have physio exercises, and a regular weekly class too, butย have similar experience lurching without the stick indoors, and have to use one outside too.

Walking outside 2 to 3.5 miles now, weather permitting.
