Walking with a gait

Posted , 8 users are following.

i am 4 and a bit weeks post op and my concern is without my sticks I wobble as I walk. Before my hip replacement I walked with a different gait as I swung my leg round. With my sticks my friends tell me I walk so much better than ever before, but the wobble walk worries me. Seeing physio next Fri at 6 weeks.

anyone else had similar? I am religiously doing my excercises and can walk about .75 mile although it's an effort.

Hi Pauline I wobbled a bit to begin with. Think it is finding the balance again. Remember the muscles on op side need retraining. At week 9 post op I am wobble free but still cautious been out among people

Keep practising and you will get better

Yes I think it is the muscles that need retraining. That makes a lot of sense

Good morning Pauline ... I am 9 weeks post op and had physical therapy right away - first in the hospital and then once a week at home and now at the office - Walking is still challenging for me - I had R THR however have a lot of groin pain in unoprated leg (turns out I need THR there too .... but that is another story) - because of that I can't really put weight on the so called supporting leg and therefor walk crooked - I am still using my walker outside though ... I was told to do so in order to get stronger and minimize the wobble ... keep on doing your exercises and don;t exhaust your self - pain is no gain in this recovery ....

be gentle with your self - take care

    Hi again...

    Sorry you are wobbly...

Same advice as above really...I was thus at 4 weeks but fine at 8 weeks...all part of the healing process.

Sadly no physio offered in Devon...but resumed my Alexander Technique lessons on posture which help a lot...focus is on neck, head and shoulders too, as well as legs, in a smooth dynamic walking style.

    Good luck

Hi Pauline I walk atm with a limp and wobble 8 weeks post op THR R But I also need the L one done which is due to be done in July my R leg is brilliant but I am now getting pain around my left knee, The Dr told me this is because my gait has change which is causing the pain and is afecting the ligaments muscles, etc and will correct once other hip is done, the muscles need retraining, if I walk on one stick i wobble like a drunk lol but I can walk better and straight on two cructhes

I have my 6/12 week check tomorrow so I will report back on what he says

    Good luck

Hi Pauline all went well at my check up they were pleased with my progress even though I have not been able to do the amount of walking because of my other hip, I don't know if you have any problems with your other hip but they told me to try and do as much as I can with my R leg excerises with my L leg as it will strenghen the muscules which would also help with recovery when I have my L hip done maybe that may help you.

Good luck and keep going foreward smile  Ron

Hi there, I started walking around the house without a crutch at just under 4 weeks. I felt wobbly and my family's comments ranged from where had I left the rest of the Penguins to you are walking like a toddler, using arms to balance. All true and a lot less pronounced at 5+ weeks. There are some walking excercices in an NHS app called pocket physio which I have been doing, placing heel and leg correctly etc. they seem to help. Still on a crutch outside.

Thanks Maggie, I am walking like a Penguin too. I downloaded the app you mention and have started the heel walking. It certainly feels straighter, so fingers crossed that will help x

It's early days yet, don't be too hard on yourself. I'm 14 weeks post op & still wobble occasionally. Keep up the exercise , it will all be ok eventually.

Thank you all. Very reassuring! I know it's early days I just am impatient!! I am sure it will get better as I train my different muscles. I havnt walked properly for years and so all the muscles will be weak.
