Usually you would go to a cane after crutches. At 5 weeks, it's a little early to go without any support. No wonder you were tired.

You've had NO PHYSIO!?! That's not good. Go online and find THR recovery exercises and do them. This is so important.

It's vital that you don't limp. Limping throws your body into bad positions and puts the load on your back. Use a cane until you are not limping at all.

Side leg lifts are the best exercise for reducing limping.

I'm sure you can go swimming at this point. It would be very good for you.

I personally would be checking with physio at your place of surgery, or contact your surgeon via his Secretary and ask the question first before going swimming, a couple of reasons, firstly certain swimming moves could cause dislocation, secondly if your wound is not 100 % healed you could get an infection.

Also I think that as previous poster said, going walking without any form of aid could maybe be slightly dangerous, especially as you are taking a dog for a walk who could with warning pull you, did they not give you a list of precautions to follow

Also I'm presuming you will be seeing surgeon next week for your six week checkup, you could ask then, great that your up and walking but I think a little caution is called for,.

    Hi Chloe

I am on my 3rd hip - and have found that this time round what really helps is walking lengths slowly in the pool - using your arms to do standing up breast stroke to keep you steady. Swimming usually not allowed until after your 6 week review.

The more you move around the better your back will settle - mine is always better the next day after I have walked in the pool. You have to remember everything is readjusting after the surgery as you will have been walking wonky for ages.

Also remember your muscles and tendons have been cut and resown together so they will take ages to recover and will ache as you start to use them again. did you get some physio exercises at discharge? They are simple and easy to do and really do make a difference.

FYI I reckon ever though I am nearly 6 weeks away from my op I wont be ready to drive safely. I dont really mind as this is a 25 long solution hopefully - and getting the first part of the recovery done without risk to the longer term outcome is my main focus

Take care, be patient and remember to take the pain relief smile

    Hi Chloe.

Sounds like you are doing fantastic, well done.

I'm guessing you are quite young, therefore recovering quicker than some, think it might be a bit soon to start swimming but check with surgeon. I had RTHR on 13th July and feel I'm 99% recovered.

Regards the back pain I had the same problem I think sitting after the op caused this because I was leaning to one side because of the swelling. Like others have said find some physio excersizes on the net and do those they will speed things along.

    Good luck and well done.

    Graham.

That's just your body telling you that you have overdone it a bit.

You are really doing very well, keep it up.

    Best wishes

At 11 months post op, 10 months post revision, I still get pain in the lower back, just above the hip joint that was replaced, and not at all on the un-operated side.  Usually when sitting at my work desk, or when commuting.

Just a sign that everything is not as perfect as it should be, and I'm overdoing things a bit.

Hi I'm 9 weeks post opp but been told to use both crutches outside and one inside. When I walk without them I limp really bad and do get some pain. Not sure if the limping is normal.

Contact the Physiotherapy department to get an appointment as this is very important. Well done for walking with no support wish I could do that. Not sure why I'm still needing my crutches.

Hope you get an appointment soon for Physiotherapy

I was swimming, Well treading water at 21 days after my surgery, with my GP's permission, OHHHHH the relief, in a heated pool, lovely.  Some months later after long time waiting, they stuffed up my appt, I finally saw a physio, she was delighted I was doing so well, very strong in legs. But she did ping me I had not done enough side leg lifts or clams and I had weakness in a particluar muslces in my buttocks and it was part of the cause of me feeling as if I was not able to balance on my operated leg.

Very important you MUST NOT try normal swimming, just very gentle post hip replacement exercises only in the water, and YOU MUST get clearance form you GP tell him you are planning on gettin gin swimming pool, and infection coul dbe disasterous.

    hi chloebo,

    how are you feeling today?

hopefully you rested and doing better -

It might be too soon to walk unaided - we all want to get rid of our devices as soon as possible but actually do need them - you are early in recovering from a major invasive surgery where muscles, tendons etc. were severed -

your body is not able to keep you in balance yet, hence the aids - important to be very aware of how you are walking - starting all over again after a time of compensating for the hip pain -

When is your follow up appointment ? ask your surgeon about getting physical therapy and about swimming ....

you are doing great already - please let us know how you are getting on, okay?

    big warm hug

    renee
