Hi

I want to stop taking Sertraline now, I have been on 50mg a day, for about a year now, but I feel I am ready to come off now, naturally I will speak to my GP, but just wondered what the procedure is?

I am not a professional but from what I have researched you need to taper gradually reducing 25 mg every week or so. I would strongly recommend to get in touch with your doctor. Have you considered why you want to get off it, if its helping you without serious side effects you should continue the treatment that's just my advise in end you should consult with your doctor and you are one to decide.

    Hi there.

I am not a doctor or professional but i have literally just done this myself coming off sertraline at 100mg. To break it down i did this:

    • reduce to 75mg for 4 weeks. I spoke to my gp and they have me 50mg tablets so i would take 1 1/2 daily.
    • reduce to 50mg after 4 weeks.
    • reduce again to 25mg.
    • then i would start skipping a dose every other day for 4 weeks. to break it down over 4 weeks i took 6,4,2 then 1 over that last 4 week period.

throughout all of this i journaled. I made notes of any side effects physical and mental.

My one bit of advice is that you will feel constant confusion between "am i withdrawing" or "is it the meds causing this" and finally "am i relapsing".

The side effects can be horrible but i found they only hit me 2 weeks into dropping to 50mg.

Im now completely off them and feel great so if i can do it - you certainly can!

    Hi

Many thanks for the replies, I shall chat with my GP when back from going away.

At the last review in November 22, the chat was to look getting me off them in Spring 23, which I was ok with. I am hoping they have done their job now, mainly prescribed for insomnia and anxiety, but that was because I was in a terrible place from being floxed by Ciprofolxin.

I just think time to try and leave the stuff now.
