Warning about bile salt supplements

For those who are still having right quadrant pain after gallbladder removal, be VERY careful about adding bile salts supplements to your regimen. I had the same exact pain after surgery as I had before it, and I ended up being admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with C. Diff. Turns out I was exacerbating the pain and feeding the highly contagious and potentially deadly intestinal tract bacterial infection by adding bile salts supplements to my diet. Suffice it to say I was close to death. Just please, don't change your digestive enzymes without consulting your doctor.

I hope that you are recovered! What a terrible thing to happen! How good of you to let us know.
If it helps to know you're not the only one, one of my doctors said he had a patient with thyroid cancer, who went to a health food store and told a sales clerk that they were having thyroid problems. So, the health food store clerk suggested an iodine supplement. The patient, all unknowing, took the supplement and the thyroid cancer went everywhere in their body.
It can be so dangerous to take supplements! Best of luck to you! I hope you're doing much better!

I really do not believe this was from the iodine, we naturally have idone in our body, are given it for scans as contrast, including in cancer for thyroid, it is naturally in foods and lots have healed themselves using iodine, even with cance. likely it was nothing to do with the iodine and it just sadly spread

My doctor implied it was from the iodine. I just thought I would offer it as anecdotal evidence...

Agreed! I don't take anything unless my doctor tells me to. Thankfully, my doctor tested me for C. Diff. The sample was "too solid" to be considered (who'd have thunk) so I'm hoping that means I don't have it!!

Clostridium difficile colitis results from disruption of normal healthy bacteria in the colon, often from antibiotics. C. difficile can also be transmitted from person to person by spores. It can cause severe damage to the colon and even be fatal.
Symptoms include diarrhea, belly pain, and fever.
Treatment includes antibiotics. In rare cases, fecal transplant or surgery may be needed.

If you feel like you are slowly being poisoned to death, it might be C. Diff. That's what I felt like along with the pain.

That's exactly right Lynda. As soon as my diagnosis came in, every person who came into my room at the hospital wore gloves and gowns. Highly contagious. Always wash your hands with soap and water when leaving any public place. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not kill c-diff. Even when you leave the grocery store and get home you should wash your hands.

Yes, it's awful. A friend of mine was responsible for selling a house for a deceased person. This person was handicapped. Though they did not die from C.dif, they had it several times. The house had to be remediated before it was put on the market and the realtor was afraid that no one would buy it, because it had to be disclosed. Eventually, someone did buy it, though the price was discounted.
Frankly, I think that C.dif is not considered to be as serious as it is. You are indeed lucky to be alive!
