Was anyone diagnosed with prostate Ca after TURP?

I would like to hear if anyone was diagnosed with prostate Ca after prostate chips recovered from TURP operation were sent to pathologist and checked for Ca. How long was waiting time for biopsy after TURP?  Did biopsy confirmed Ca, was Gleason score the same, were new lesions discovered etc?

I received this scary news 8 days after TURP. My Uro is recommending to wait 3-4 months before biopsy to ensure prostate is completely healed. My last PSA was 0.7 in November while I was on Finesteride so Uro multiplied it x2 (1.4) DRE at same time was normal.

Hope to hear from someone with similar experience.

I had the TURP operation in August 2014. Although PSA's remained low I had continuing difficulty and not much relief. Flomax didn't help. In May 2015 a PSA came back at 77 and a biopsey confirmed metastatic prostate cancer that had spread to lymph nodes and one bone lesion. Began immediate hormone and chemo therapy (8 cycles). PSA has remainded below 1 since then and I'm on quarterly injections of Lupron. So far no returning problems although I stil don't hae a steady stream.

Although our experiences are different I replied to your post as I've felt the TURP aggravated the prostate and somehow accelerated the cancer. The urologist disagrees, so this is just my subjective diagnosis. Hope you're doing well.

    Hi MK,

    I'm 62 - in Australia.

I had my TURP 2 weeks ago. My PSA is 2.4-3.0 (Checked annually since I turned 50)

The Uro told me the pathology found cancer.

He said it was Gleason stage 6 and that I should adapt 'Watchful Waiting'. PSA's now 6 monthly and probably a biopsy.

My GP (encouraging fellow that he is) said given that I have My father, his brother and my brother who had Prostate cancer, It was not 'If' but 'When' I get Prostate cancer.

      Yabbie,

thanks for your response. I am sorry that you are in the same boat as I am. Just had my post op biopsy and awaiting results. My next appointment is scheduled for Aug 23 to discuss biopsy results.

i do not have a family history of prostate Ca. My father had only BPH but in his late sixties. I was told last year I have BPH that causes LUTS.

Was very negatively surprised to hear about Ca after TURP but it happened. Will let you know biopsy findings.

      Hi MK,

Yes, the whole PC thing is scarry.

Most of the time we are scared over the unknown.

Firstly, the PC path to take. Our uro will recommend a treatment protocol that he sees as apropriate. He may be right, he may be ill informed or he may be wrong.

The side effects of the treatments are ours to own - it's our body after all. The Dr will do his best and send the bill. He won't have to live the rest of his life with the results (don't get me wrong - most of the time the outcomes are wonderful)

We need to be overcoming fear by understanding as much as we can about the condition we have. That's why the forum is important. I am reading as much as I can about the different treatments (and their side effects) so I go into the Dr's surgery armed with a written list of questions.

I'm reading a layman's journey called 'An ABC of Prostate Cancer in 2015' by Alan G. Lawrenson at the moment. Very detailed. I didn't know there are so many ways to deal with this cancer!

I'm writing an article called 'I have cancer'. It's a 'work in progress'. A way for me to express my feelings and is exploring the different ways people handle the fear.

Some things we are right to be fearful about. Others need information to calm and clarify our fears. Others have to do with the shake up of being confronted by our mortality and what we do about it and the future beyond that.
