Was Diagnosed with Barretts Oesophagus In August 2013

I was also diagnosed as having a hiatus hernia at the same time! I was put on Esomeprazole 40mg on tablet a day from August 2013 to August 2014 when the acid reflux beat the PPI so I started taking 2 40mg Esomeprazole tablet each and every day!

But today I finally had my Barretts Oesophagus re-scope check and guess what they found oh yes Barretts Oesophagus- (length 2cm, 40-42) and Oesophagitis LA Grade 2 and also my Hiatus Hernia increased from (38 - to - 46)

And they have now told me to take 4x 40mg Esomeprazole tablets per day 😒😞😒

Lucky me aye!

No the endoscopist didn't mention dysplasia what is this? I have Oesophagitis LA grade 2 is this dysplasia?

No I believe it is different

Grade 0 is given to normal oesophagus with no macroscopic damage.

Grade 1 describes an oesophagus with a few areas of erythema, mucosal friability and contact bleeding. These are minor changes regarded as normal by some gastroenterologists.

Grade 2 oesophagitis has small superficial linear erosions. These tend to lie on the crests or tops of the mucosal folds and may have some surface exudate.

Grade 3 describes the condition when these erosions coalesce and join around the circumference of the oesophagus. A cobblestone appearance is created by islands of oedematous tissue between the erosions.

Grade 4 is characterised by extensive mucosal damage with deep ulcers. Strictures may develop, and where this happens there may be less damage above the stricture because the stricture forms a barrier to stomach acids.

    these are the different levels

Rob it took about two weeks u til I received my result the dr that did not even mention barretts to me it wasn't until when I went back to get my results from my PCP is when he told me that I had barretts according to the results ? I was shocked but have since 2  years ago seen a gastroenterologist and had a follow up endoscope at which time he told me I still had Barrett's of soffit guess with non-dysplasia but they cannot tell you that till after they get your biopsy results back and all non-dysplasia it means is that it is non-cancerous

Rob all I can say is dont panic, esophagitus is to do with the top part and any part not egfected by the barretts it means that part is inflamed I have esophagitus grade 3 and have problems swallowing solid food when its bad, your barretts segment is low risk as its under 3cms, and did u have biopsies taken when they diagnosed barretts if not then no abnormal cells were found so no dysplasia and even if biopsies are taken from abnormal looking cells no dysplasia can be found sometimes, im high risk on 4 separate things which I don't know if that makes 4 times higher risk or just high risk lol, im fat, my barretts esophagus segment is 7cms anything over 3cms is high risk, my aunt died of cancer of the esophagus 2 yrs and 4 months ago and finally I do have dysplasia but I have low dysplasia that just means pre cancer but doesn't mean it will become cancer just abnormal cells that might become cancerous, so if u have 2cm segment with no dysplasia even if u r over weight your risk is very low hope this helps x

Hi I know it's been a while since your post, but I was just interested, did they recommend surgery? Have you had the Fundoplication?
