Washing and using a SITZ...

I am very lucky to have a sink next to my toilet.

I use a shower spray attached to the taps and am able to wash very easily with that.

i also use a bowl which I place in my toilet and fill with water to sit in.

I have an ALOE VERA plant in my bathroom and use the plant and its gel in the water to sit and soak.

it is a Godsend.

I also use the gel from the Aloe Vera plant to relieve the soreness. It is the most natural medication and I love it.

i have to wear a pad though because otherwise it will make my underwear green. But it is so worth it.

      Hello Claire,

The plant will split quite easily, although it can split too easily at times.

Gently prise open the stem and gently scrape out the gel.

It is a very slippery job and can be a little frustrating at times, but it gets easier once you have practiced a few times.

Depending on the size of the leaf I would use about a 3 inch length - although there is no limit to how much to use.

As I said, it is a very slippery job, but the gel is amazing and helps me enormously.

i have been growing the plants for a long time and it grows very well on the windowsill in my bathroom.

Allways water the plant from the bottom so the soil can soak up the water from the base so as not to get water on the actual leaves.

It grows quite quickly and has many uses.

When I bathe I put the leaf in the bath with me and scrape the gel out while I'm in there.

It is a wonderful healing plant that cools and soothes  cuts and grazes and sores.

Thank you so much for your reply.

Can I ask where in the world you are?? Im in the UK and wonder if anything would grow on my windowsill !!!

Do you think shop bought Aloe Vera would be as good?

I grow this in the uk on my kitchen window ledge.  It is a magic relief for small burns and can actually stop the blistering in its tracks.  You can now buy aloe vera gel in tubes.  I found my last one in a pound shop.  It is excellent relief for sunburn too, and often found near the sunscreens in chemists.  Just ask the staff if you can't find it, it is a well known item here now.

I live in the UK too.

it grows very well on my windowsill.

i have a plant in my kitchen too.

Shop bought Aloe Vera is not the same as the real thing - the Plant itself is as pure as you can get.

I use it everyday and am growing as much as I can. I love it.

Where did you buy your plant from? Run of the mill garden centre!? Are there different types of AV plants?

      thank you!

My Mum gave me my plant.

I have checked on Google and it seems you can buy them almost anywhere. And they can be bought online too.

There are different types but they all have the same healing qualities.

May I ask how long you have been using aloe?  Do you have to be careful not to get even a bit on the urethra?  I used pure aloe liquid from a health store very sparingly and it made a world of improvement.  I only used it after showering in the morning and nite for 8 weeks.  But then we were recently away and i dont know if it was because i wasnt showering in the evening or retaining urine longer while traveling or spraying too much baking soda on vulva but my urethra got very inflamed.  I used a test strip and there was no bacteria but just inflammation.  Now I am afraid to try the aloe again even tho i know it helps so much.

I would try it again and then you would be sure if it makes things better or worse.  I have yet to try this for LS but I had a suspicion that it would be helpful.  I am just experimenting with Manuka Honey at the moment which seems to give me relief.

      Hello Lyn.

I have been using Aloe Vera for a few months.

I don't make a point of keeping it away from my urethra. I don't know if I should or not.

I just spread it everywhere because it spreads so easily.

      it is so cooling too.

Chrissy, I promise it works in minutes.  If you google Vulvar lichen planus and aloe vera or lichen sclerosis and aloe vera you will find reports of very well done studies done be medical communities and doctors on the use of aloe on these conditions and the conclusion it is a safe and effective remedy to achieve remission.  I really believe i became irritated from a too strong dose of baking soda in a small cup of water on my urethra.  In the studies there were no side effects noted.  Also using Cetaphil to wash with in the shower helps.

Thankyou.  Just bought my daughter Cetaphil last week.  (She has some skin dryness from medication she is using on her face and was having difficulty moisturising without increasing her skin problem. Result with the Cetaphil.  I think that is an excellent idea.  I use Epaderm which is very soothing but should I need extra help I will bear that in mind.  Thanks again.

I will research the use of aloe with Ls more before I try it but it sounds really promising.  Thankyou.

Thankyou Lyn. I am so glad to hear that about Aloe Vera being studied and found to be an effective remedy to achieve remission.

i have never used baking soda.

I have only tried Coconut Oil.

And I use Aqueous cream for washing and occasionally also use it as a cooling cream if I am not at home.

Yesterday I took some Aloe Vera out with me and it was such a relief. I broke off some of the plant and put it in a tub and carried it in my bag. I was surprised how it stayed intact. I'm going to do this more often as it means I can leave the house more often too.

Hanny's baking soda rinse should definietly not be strong. I've been putting 1/3 cup in a fairly deep bath twice a week with no ill effects. I wouldn't want the bottle of rinse water to be any stronger than that. Like Dermovate, more is not better.

I'm all for using aloe vera. I used a couple of quarts of it last time I had an extensive psoriasis outbreak. Very soothing when cool.
