WBC 1003 no infection

2 weeks ago I had a urine test as I was suffering uti symptoms. The result came back with wbc of 1003 but no infection. In fact I received a call from the GP's office to ask if I was ok. I sent a test again the following week and the wbc was down to 245, I was told by results nothing needed doing as the infection was clearing! I had confirmed previously that there was nothing else showing in the original results except the wbc. As I was still unwell I sent a third sample for testing. When I phoned for the reuslts I was told this was only dipped and was fine so it wasn't sent for testing. I was extremly worried be the first phone call, never heard of a GP surgery ring to ask if you are ok.
Has anyone any dealings with high wbc or am I worrying uneccessarily.
I have been getting uti's for about 30 years I am 68 years of age
Thank you

A high white blood cell count is usually taken as a sign of infection. The dipstick test looks for wbc (leukocytes) and also nitrites. A high level of either one or both should alert whoever is doing the dipstick test to the possibility of infection.
Can I just ask why you don't actually take yourself along to see your GP? Just sending in a urine sample and hoping for a cure is perhaps not the way to go. You say you're extremely worried, yet you'd rather post something on this site for the world to speculate on than get an actual doctor's opinion! I can see that after 30 years you're probably weary of UTIs, but all the same, if you're worried do the sensible thing! High wbc can be very dangerous as it means your body is fighting something off.

Hi
Thanks you for your reply. If I feel a UTI coming on I normally ring the surgery and they tell me to send a sample for testing. This has normally worked and prescription issued to help immediately. On this occassion i received a phone call from the surgery on a Friday evening (before I expected the results to be back) asking how I was and if no better take a sample in on the Monday, which I did. When I phoned for the results, which were contradictory I did ask for an appointment and was told there were non available and advised to take another sample in on the Monday. At our surgery you cannot see a doctor unless you first have a telephone consultaion and there were no slots free. I was made to feel as if I was being a nuisance, this is what sewed the doubt in my mind. I am old school and do not want to go to A&E unless I feel it is a true emrergency. So I am not sure if i am being over the top or should be worrying.

Ha, yes and sorry, our GPs don't have this system but I've heard it can be difficult to get anything sorted out. Also, I've read Marina's reply below and think she might well be onto something as I've also experienced brning sensations from weeing that are actually caused by thinning tissue. Oestrogen cream did sort it out for me and I do actually need to get some more! If you make an appointment it's something you perhaps could ask the doctor. How are things now, after 3 days? If worse I would definitely see the doc. Good luck.

Fingers crossed for a few weeks free of the dreaded UTI

Hi...are you taking any sort of HRT or do you use a vaginal oestrogen cream or pessary? At your age the vulval tissues, including the urethra are thinning so a hormone supplement can be very useful in helping to 'plump' them up again.
