Hi There!
I'm not an expert by any means but I do know that the proper way to come off of any antidepressant medication is to taper down slowly. It is not safe to quit cold turkey.
I would get a second opinion. I'm shocked that your doctor recommended this.
Good luck with your recovery. I wish you all the very best!

doing this would make the side effects from stopping, less of a rough ride

I tapered off 50mg over 7 months and by doing so avoided all the nasty and often protracted withdrawals.
(my GP advised I go down to 25 mg for two weeks then stop - IT WAS HORRENDOUS !)
i then found the thread on this site 'sertraline withdrawal, does it go away'
it seems the lower the dose the slower the taper.
please search the thread and look for information on the 10% reduction method, it is safe and it works. You will be amazed at the. Number of horror stories from people who have tried to stop this drug more quickly and as for going cold turkey, it is dangerous and can cause permanent damage to the nervous system, clearly your GP does not have any personal experience of taking this drug.
good luck

Dears,
It's close to one month and I am pretty much fine....In last one month, I experienced light brain zaps (electric shocks through head and body, but not that bad), depersonalization, heavy head some time, tiredness as if I don't want to wake up and visit some other place (manageable though), no such major anxiety issues....
I between, I am active 2 3 times a week - walking and running for 30~40 mnts ......Practicing mindfulness and deep breathing every day...Very usseful and suggest everyone to give it a try....
Stay blessed and best of luck guys...Everything will be Ok one or other day.....HF...
