Hi Gail and welcome.
I'm coming off zopiclone myself at the moment.
Google The Ashton Method. It will explain that you need to change to diazepam (valium) to taper off the zopiclone, because valium lasts a long time in the body and zopiclone doesn't.
My specialist doctor, from the walk-in-refer-yourself drug addict clinic immediately changed me to valium.
The other thing you MUST know is that tapering should take a long time. I've been tapering with valium for six months now. But I started at 30mg daily and have gradually got down to 12mg daily.
It is vital that the taper is done correctly, Gail. If you can print out The Ashton Method take it to show your GP.
Depending on where you live, there are lots of walk in drug addiction clinics. I'm in London but have noticed that people who live in rural areas often don't have these clinics.
If I can be of any other help, please message me again.
Love Tess xxxx

At gp today ..I've been referred to psychiatric unit for support and she thinks I've been coming off too quickly...she has prescribed mirtazepine (low dosage) to be taken at night..along with zop..to see her next week ..felt she took me seriously which was good..thanks for your advice and kindness. Hi Gail,
Sometimes withdrawal can cause a loss of appetite, so It may be that when you wake, your blood sugar is very low, which can cause that feeling of dread.
Try drinking some orange juice as soon as you wake up, and have a good breakfast, even if you dont feel hungry.
It doesn't seem like much, but this really made a difference for me.
Give it a try.
Best wishes.

(( Gail)) sorry to hear you are having a rough time.
I googled mirtrazapine...it can have some nasty side effects for some people. Tell your doctor. There are other medications that might work better for you.
If you withdraw too quickly from zopiclone you will feel quite ill. The idea is to reduce your dosage slowly over a period of months.
Say you are taking 5 mg...you would stay at that dosage for a few weeks and then reduce it to 4 mg...just take it easy and slow.
I did this and hardly noticed any ill effect.
I also recommend fruit smoothies, chocolate and naps
