Weber C Fracture Experience

Hi all,

During a rugby match on 17th Mar this year I ended up with a Weber C Fracture (full dislocation of my left ankle and fractured fibula) after an awkward tackle.

I had a stress reduction and temp cast put on later that evening and subsequent ORIF surgery the following morning with a syndemosis screw through the ankle and metal plate along the fibula.

I was in a backslab for 3 weeks and fibreglass cast for a further 3 weeks before a final x-ray and cleared for weight bearing on 27th Apr.

I started PT on 30th Apr and have been to 3 sessions to date. I’m also currently down to one crutch when out and about but happily hobble around without any assistance at home.

I’m keen to hear other people’s experience who’ve had a similar injury around the rehab and recovery.

I’m 29yr old male and reasonably fit prior to the injury (i.e actively running most workdays etc) - however I did rupture my Achilles on the same leg a few years ago so no stranger to rehab.

I should also add I’ve been working from home over the 6 weeks that I couldn’t weight bear and have now started going in to the office twice a week and working three days from home.

I’m also scheduled to have the syndemosis screw removed in just over a month but the metal plate along the fibula will stay in.

I’m now just over 9 weeks post op. I’ve had 7 PT sessions to date (twice weekly) and have found the sports massage and exercises helpful to date. I’ve been doing Knee to Wall and Seated Calf Raises and have now been given the okay to start Standing Calf and Toe Raises holding onto the back of a chair and also Proprioception exercises. I have my last clinical appt with my Orthopaedic Surgeon in just over a fortnight and then subsequent surgery to remove the syndemosis screw in just over 4 weeks. I’m comfortable walking with a slight limp which is improving daily. Anyone had similar experiences and any idea whether I’ll need to be back on crutches when the screw is removed from my ankle?
