Week 1 in a cast after a Full depth Achilles Rupture

Hi I am 47 I have only been in a cast for 1 week due to a full Achilles rupture playing badminton. The accident happened Friday evening so had to wait until the following Monday for an ultrasound this prove the full thickness rupture. It also  gave information to the surgeon that the gap between the tendon was 4mm, the surgeon then went on to say due to this there was no need to operate and at that point  leg was cast from the knee down with my toes pointing downward. I had researched a little during the weekend before and said to myself it would be better to have the surgery. Just a bit worried

as the chances of re rupture are higher with my type of treatment.

Hi Sean , i am just over 11 weeks after a full rupture caused by dancing!!! i am the same age and never had surgery , have just had an aircast boot off after 10 days in cast and 8 weeks in boot. At the moment i am waiting on physio but can fully weight bear but still walk with a limp , i cant walk far or for long and foot still swells up . i still have the boot and and wore it for security on a night out at the weekend and a wedding last week as nervous about rerupture whilst in busy envronments incase i get knocked by mistake . So far my tendon feels quite well healed although still cant get full rotation of ankle and not cleared to drive yet . I have been told that with my treatment plan re rupture rate is only 5% which is different from the internet , also was advised slipping in the bath/shower most common along with going up or down step/kerb without putting foot fully on step , so I am being extra careful . First couple of weeks are the hardest especially if in a cast . I bought a drive medical knee scooter to get around indoors as hated the crutches and have barely used them . it was great in the house and getting around shops to get out , harder going on uneven ground. Good luck with your treatment and this site is great for advise.

I had surgery on my Achilles tendon in October, cast for 8 weeks, moon walker boot for another 7 weeks, i am now having physio since January. I know people who have not had surgery and the recovery progress is a lot slower. Caroline, my lovely physiotherapist told me the chances of re-rupture is higher in people who don’t have surgery. She herself though has been working for the NHS for 10 years and has only had 2 people re-rupture on her both non-surgical route. So i was quite happy with that even if i took non-surgical route. Re-repture sounds very rare though from what she tells me and what i have read.

Also i would op for surgery if you get a chance.
