I started runnning a year ago and i have lost 3 stone. I am now looking to run my first half marathon this year- The Perkins Great Eastern Run. Can anyone else advise if they got into running to lose weight and how did you find your first half marathon? Thanks

Wow Kris that is great! I enjoyed running before I got ill recently, long story!

Anyway back to running, I've done 3 half marathons and the best advice I can give you is prepare. Run at least 3 times a week, build up your distances over time. I found 3 months was enough time to prepare from doing 5km 3 times a week up to doing about 40-50km a week to the couple of weeks before the race.

2 weeks before the race I would do an 18km run and then taper back to 10-12km per run for the next week before a couple of 5-8km runs the week of the race ginving myself 4 or 5 days rest before race day.

I also found it helpful to do a local 10km race a couple of months before the half marathon to mentally prepare for what was coming on the day of the race. I discovered very quickly that adrenalin makes you start very fast, but you pay for it at the end so it's good to learn to hold a little back.

Take water on training runs and try to eat healthy but have fun!

    Dear kris,

I have trained for many things and the knowledge given to me was to train to your best level of fitness and not the run itself and if that gets you to complete then you've won so to speak.

My Scottish friend in Australia has written a book called older yet faster, check it out.
