Weight exercise after hip replacement

Posted , 5 users are following.

Hi, I have both my hips replaced (cementless, ceramic on ceramic) , one is 1,5 yo and other is 7 months ago and I am willing to do some exercises with following machines with some weight (actually I am doing already twice a week for last 2 months);

-Leg Extension Machine

-Leg Curl Machine

-Seated Abductor and Adductor Machine

Some sources say that is ok and even recommended, some say to avoid them or avoid weight and I am totally confused. I appreciate if you guys have any experience or a reliable source/knowledge ? I am 42 btw.

Thanks, Tolga

Hi Tolga -- I have no clue as to the answer to your question.  I'm sure others with more knowledge on the subbed will respond.  I'm just 3 weeks post op but I'm interested in the answer for me down the road.

I think I would be tempted to contact a physiotherapist and have him/her provide some exercises and observe you doing them so you know you're doing them correctly.

Have you been happy with the ceramic on ceramic replacement?  I have a ceramic socket but metal ball.

    Good luck and welcome!

Hi Leslie, you should consider doing exercises in my question at least 6 months post op, and if they are ok to do. (hope somebody answer that)... Yes, I am happy so far.. There must be a reason for your doctor to chose metal to ceramic on your hip... CoC is popular for some reason, however, it may squeak in future... Hope my ones won't.

I appreciate if you could ask your PT once you get in contact for the specific machines I mentioned above.

      Thanks , Tolga

      Hi Tolga,

Oh, good that you are 6 mos post op and the exercises are working well for you.  I do hope to be doing exercises like those at the 6 month stage.

My hip is a metal ball and a ceramic socket.  Here in BC, Canada, the standard is a type of plastic socket.  If you want the ceramic socket, you have to pay for it.  I chose to pay because from what I hear the ceramic lasts longer.  I don't think any of the surgeons here are doing ceramic on ceramic though.

I know after much research I wanted ceramic,  I called my Dr and no luck they use metal here, of course I wonder if living in SC may be a bit behind..  been here 3 years and wonder if I was still in NY if I would be having anterior and ceramic.

    Greetings

I use the extensions curls and hip abductors also. Typicaly once a week

But. It is important to pause at the muscle contraction with these. Don't do the flippy thing. You will get little out of it

By doing good excersizing you can cut to once a week. Also however I either swim or elliptical prior to the leg routine. I work four sets and 8 to 10 relations each set .

I also do 3 sets of lunges but I keep my leg forward for these and don't step each time. Put your rear foot up on a stool to increase intensity. Then a few body weight squats will find Ishmael off your leg day

If your interested in developing some dynamics try frog hopping some stairs. I do this once or twice a week. Something like 4 sets of 50 stairs will really work your quads. Be sure to work these where you have a good stair rail to slide up or grasp if needed

I'm a training fanatic. I mean I've trained most days for the last 45 years. Mostly martial arts but also strength training 4 times a week. I'm 55 now. Really one great leg day week is all you need. But we are all at different levels. So take your time listen to your body.

If you use the machines correctly you will also cut down on the weight you use. Almost everyone I see doesn't know how to use the machines you talk about and they flip their leg up and don't hold the contraction at all.Even many trainers don't understand these simple and effective machines

    Good luck

Oh by the way. I'm 12 weeks post right hip replacement. it rain judo twice a week(with mybgrandson) aikido twice a week and boxing or karate one day.

Also lift and cardiovascular most days. .

My strength is good and am able to rondori (open grappling) and take break falls / roll out as needed.

I don't kick the heavy bag but do work with a water weighted bag.

I just thought I would give you a heads up as to where I'm at

Thanks for writing how far post op you are, Josh.  I am 3.5 weeks so a bit behind you.

I have set up an appt to see a Medical Exercise Specialist in about 4 weeks from now.  So I'll be about 8 weeks post-op.

Do you think that is good timing?  I'm just wondering if I should wait until I'm 12 weeks post-op and then I think all the hip precautions will be lifted.

I'll be paying for this specialist so I want to make sure that I go at the right time and not be limited by what I'm able to do.

I an now just doing the exercises from the regular Physio and also walking 20-30 minutes a day (broken into smaller times).

      Thanks for your input.

      Leslie
