Weight Gain

Has anyone else struggled with weight gain with hyperthyroidism. I honestly thought I had underactive because I have put on so much weight over last three years and seem totally unable to control it or do anything about it.

I am taking carbimazole and due to have radio iodine therapy near Christmas.

Consultant tells me it will all come right eventually - is he humouring me or telling the truth?

Can anyone help

Weight gain can actually be a symptom of hyperthyroidism / Graves' disease, as I found out myself after being diagnosed in Jan 14.  I couldn't believe it - I have all the symptoms, tiredness, anxiety, sleeplessness, brain fatigue, palpitations but no weight loss!  I was prescribed carbimazole 20mg a day, but on reading how others had gained even more weight, I decided not to continue with the drug... Stupid I know!  I'm waiting to see an endocrinologist as a private patient to see what he recommends.  Fingers crossed hey?!

I have put on around 10kg and feel really fat.  Pharmacist said it's from the anti thyroid drugs. I am on PTU. I barely eat but it doesn't seem to make a difference with the weight gain. I was always size 12 but now 14 and flab puffs out over jeans. My sister laughs saying for the first time in her life she's thinner than me. I initially lost 10kg in 3 weeks when i got hyperthyroid before diagnosis but I'd rather take PTU and put on weight than be as sick as I was before PTU. Still feel ill but nothing like before

Thank you for responding. Sometimes I feel like jacking it all in. I am so fat now. I have put on 7 stones over the past few years. and still have some of the residual symptoms.  My mum shouts at me and calls me fat and keeps tellin me what I am doing 'wrong'! She was a nurse and I have told her so many times that I am not the only one with these types of symptoms despite having an over active thyroid. What is wrong with people? I am not going to have the complete operation until I have a second opinion that I cannot have a partial thyroidectomy. It's bad enough battling your body, your mind, the general public and the doctors without having to put up with your mother talking to you as if you are stupid.

Hi my name is Carrie and I'm new to this site. I just found out that I have hyperthyroidism. I have gained a tremendous amount of weight and other ppl I have talked to that have hyperthyroidism have lost weight. Im still waiting to see the specialist and also very nervous to do so. I have been told that they will make my thyroids hypo and that will cause me to gain even more weight. I'm always tired with no energy to do anything and I'm always hungry. Any suggestions would be great.

    Hi my name's Emma.

I was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid when I was only 16, but I can say with confidence I had symptoms when I was 14 onwards! I am now 20 and after being off medication for 5 months I relapsed! The weight gain has been terrible I went from a size 8 to a size 12! And too some that may not seem that bad but for my age i feel massive! I work out most days for hours and since being back on tablets the weight has stopped coming off and i have a strong feeling I am now hypo! I feel hopeless I've done everything right quit smoking, exercise and improved my diet. I hate my reflection with a passion and stopped leaving the house when I was 17. I originally tried writing this because I wanted to give somebody hope, but being honest I have no hope and most days wish I was dead. Is anyone else just sick of being tired all the time?
