Apparently it can go either way witch citalopram. Gain and loss are both side effects. I gained a bit.

Hi Heather, yes on the weight gain. I've been on anti depressants, close to a year, the last 4 months on cita. I knew chance of gain or lose weight, I kicked up my exercise and watched wat I ate and not good enough, I've also went off cita. My first week I feel so good, not the bloating and frumpy feeling, and I've read other people lost the weight they gained thru diet and exercise! I've also went to a naturopath, and getting the vitamins and minerals my body needs. So looking forward to being healthy inside and out! Hope the same for u! We can't let this stuff beat us! We control our own destiny! Peace✌🏻

I have gained quite a bit of weight on Citalopram. I eat healthy and cannot exercise much as i have mobility problems so i feel down about it.  It's a catch 22, do i feel better mentally and put weight on or stop them and feel anxious and depressed.

    Hey Heather,

I'm in the same boat at the moment but when I went on the cit in January I did lose a few kilos. I then had the implanon put in my arm and have now gained 6 kilos. Are you on any birth control? That could be the cause? I'm thinking off removing the implanon to see if it is really that as it has made me a little bit upset about the extra kilos.

I was on them for 2 years and also put on around 30lbs.  I'm just coming off them now and am also desperately hoping I'll lose the weight.  I'm furious with my doctor because I've got a history of eating disorders and have been very distressed over the weight gain, and yet she kept telling me that it wasn't due to the tablets and let me tear myself apart trying to work out what I was doing wrong.  She's only just admitted that Citalopram can cause weight gain.  All the best, Heather - let's hope we both have some luck getting back to our original weight x.

I found I put on weight taking citalopram, for me part of it is due to the medication and lack of energy and part due to depression and not exercising and eating junk food as it is quick and easy or for comfort.

I lost quite a lot of weight (around 3 stones) during reducing and stopping citalopram, some of it was due to feeling more positive and that I was taking control of my health and I improved my diet. I felt I had more energy/anxiety when reducing the dosage so was more active also.

Unfortunately I have put some weight back on, due to returning anxiety/depression and worse diet caused by stressful ongoing events, but not as much as when on the citalopram.

Citalopram has many effects on the body, you may find that the weight drops without having to do anything, but diet (low sugar/carbohydrate) and exercise will help it go quicker.
