Weight gain and fatigue

I have been on Amlopidine for seven months and have put on several kilos, about half a stone, in that time, although have been increasingly careful in what I ate. That in itself made me depressed as I have always been able to control my weight well. By evening the swelling around the abdominal area is severe, necessitating the loosening of all waistbands. This is not helpful for social activity. I also feel fatigued and often take a nap in the afternoon. I am 69 and at first put this down to age and opportunity. I have increased exercise too, but nothing stops the inevitable weight increase. It was only when I found your site, I realised I was not alone. I asked the doctor to change the medication. He said to half the pill. My BP was 120/80 on half the pill so he said I could stop taking Amlopidine, and return for regular check-ups. I am disappointed that my tummy is still swelling, but I have only been three days on the new regime.

Jenny, I have experienced same symptoms as you. Have been on amlodipine for nearly a year. After taking it for a couple of weeks I put on half a stone and since then more. Can't fit into any of my clothes. I have terrible bouts of tiredness, and struggle to get through housework and gardening; also notice I don't meet up with friends as much as I used to. I have just turned 60. Other side effects which I believe I suffer from are blurred vision, slightly swollen hands, ankles, knees; on the odd occasion feeling light headed enough to almost fall over. Plus over the last few days tingles in my left arm and hand leading to slight numbness. Am gong to tell my doctor that I want to come off this drug.

I sometimes can't even make meals or clean up or even get dressed and washed. i nap also in the daytime, but never feel NOT tired. ANYONE ELSE ,NOT FEELING ANY LESS TIRED AFTER DAYTIME NAPPING? I have always been someone who makes the most of their appearance EVERYDAY, but now i don't have the energy! Also put on weight. My joints and muscles ache all the time too. Especially my RIGHT ARM and LEFT HIP. My arm feels dead and i can't pick things up or grip things. ANYONE ELSE WITH THIS PROBLEM. i feel really down as my life has been affected so much. i do not know 100% if it is AMLPODINE but when readibg other comments similar, it makes you think. It actually brings SOME comfort, as you think you're going round the bend, and people just think you're always winging! anyone the same? PLEASE answer, its awful. I am only 47,but feel 77.

Very interesting forum. Have just had conversation with my consultant re swelling of feet, ankles, knees, all of which have come on in the last day and having been on Amlo for just a fortnight. Just thought I'd check the side effects of this pill and behold, not only are these possible symptoms but other things which are happening could also be down to them. For example, walked about 7 miles over the course of yesterday - getting fit as advised. By the time it came for my 2 mile walk home from work I really didn't think I was going to manage the last half mile as my legs and feet felt as though I'd walked the coast to coast. Once I did make it home and flopped I instantly fell asleep for an hour. Not like me as I'm usually a get up and go person but don't seem to be able to complete any task at present without regular rests. Now I'm wondering if the blurred vision I'm experiencing at the moment could have something to do with the Amlo too. Consultant says take the tablet (5mg) every other day to see if this helps but am seriously thinking of knocking them on the head completely, especially as heart probs haven't categorically been confirmed yet.
