Hi Sadie,  wow thank you  Im on the same drugs as you  and  quite a lot more, but since they increased my amatriplyn and pregablin and tramodole   my weight has rocketed. in face I brought 3 new dresses  then went to wear them at an event  to find they are to tight sad  I know I need the meds but why do we have to put on weight  ahhh .. since having the shingles as well wearing bras are a big NO.NO  finding clothes that you can wear  which must be cotten  NO nylon or  Polyaster  because it makes the  nerves fire up . Do you have some one from a pain clinic that can advise you, may be they can try out different drugs

    wishing you well  take care

    Hi Sadie:

Yes, yes, yes!! Some of these meds cause weight gain.  I have gained weight as well  Taking neurontin does cause some weight gain. I think it is a steroid type drug.  I took very large doses years ago and caused me all kinds of problems.  Then, the doctors did not realize that this med in high doses can cause conflicts in your well being.  I was taking about 800mg x 5 a day which is pretty extream.  amatryptoline is an anti-depressant and pretty strong at that.  When I was taking it, upset my stomach at the start and made me feel woozy.  After a few weeks it settled down.  Anyway before I go, I am not going to give you small hugs but nice big hugs like you do.  But they will be gentle.  I'm here if you want to talk.  Take care, feel better, and keep your spirits up.

Thanks Mel x I got doctors in few weeks so will explore my options as don't really want to stop the drugs that are taking the pain away finally lol I wish I could not take any medicine but to go back to that terrible pain everyday!!

I also hate being over weight as it really depresses me as I used to be a size 6 now I'm a 16 but that is 3 kids later lol and being 35

      Hi

      sadie:

These things are so hard to deal with,  You would think that these drug companies would find ways to develop these meds so as not to gain weight.  They certainly don't consider that.  With all the technology around, you would think these big pharmas can find ways to make better medicines. But they don't really care for a patients well being,  If they did, ways to develop better medicines can be done,  Look at all the chemicals which are synthetics which more than likely not good for you anyway,  Look at recalls of newer medicines that happen?  Tons of advertisement on TV, magazines and internet promoting this stuff,  Is it no wonder why we have to pay exhorberant prices for prescription drugs?  We pay not only for their drugs but ads as well.  You can see I am ranting as it does bother me.  We all hate pain everyday.  I would trade anything sometimes to have some relief.  Doesn't happen though.  It would nice for me to get rid of all the medicines as well.  I know some you do have to take like thyroid which I have taken most all my life and some others as well.  When you go on the internet, do you see all the new so called natural remedies?  I don't know about things like that which cure cancer and such.  Me and my wife are overweight as well but it is so hard to lose even when you try to.  You are young and at least have lots to go to be on this Earth.  Me on the otherhand, is almost the time to be leaving and not to another planet, I think.  lol  Its so hard to get up each and every day with stiffness, pain, bad balance and whatever else.  I have 2 daughters both married but no grandchildren.  One don't want and one cant have.  Listen, I am retired and at a ripe age of 76, soon to be 77.  With all the problems I have, I really don't know how many years I have left but for whatever I have, I know that my life has to be on a positive note.  All I can say is to live it the best I can and take each day at a time.  You still have the opportunity to see if newer and better medications can come on the market which can cure some diseases.  If we had nothing wrong with us, we wouldn't have to take any of the meds that we do.  I have to close now so take care, lose the weight to where you were and have a good day.

one strong hug to you makes up for many small hugs. smile

Meds put the weight on me to!  dammit...  I found my hair was thinning out and then clumps of hair began to come out..so 'Bu--ar that!!'....   I weened off.  They didn't do anything for pain anyway.   Well as a Good doctor told me, 'there is NO actual Long Term Painkiller'. So truly, if folk can learn to master the art of some physical balance to prevent flareups, just try to deal with your daily pain/s. Medicate only when you 'really HAVE to'...  Eat good food, don't over eat, and get some form of daily mobility going... Spa pool stretches and gentle aerobics maybe, and try to get some sleep, even if it is through the.  With our condition there is no real routine sleep hygiene, unless you rely on Sleeping tablets..  then you risk building up the dosage after awhile.  So if folk can do it as naturally as one can.. then do it...

I do understand that NOT Everyone has a strong pain tolerance as the next person........... so going as naturally as possible won't suit everyone.

However, think about it this way.  If your med's aren't actually doing alot for you!!, then think about the fact your dealing with pain 24/7 anyway...so by revaluating your stragies you may not have to put up with 'weight gain, and useless meds, and side effects of them'...

The other alternative is of course 'Natural Plant'.... a great sleep aid and pain killer.

    All the best...

I am exactly the same: I’m on amatriptolin and I’ve put on around a stone a year in the last couple of years. I exercise gym/swim three time a week, don’t drink or smoke and eat healthy yet i still put weight on!!! The doctor basically said tough and didn’t really believe me and thinks it’s me not the drugs... Any tips on how to `fix` this side effect would be very welcome...

yep, 2 stone and 8lb on since the meds. but i have lost 8lb of it by dieting hard, but it comes off really slow.

But i can't exercise so it's down to food alone but slow weight loss is better than non at all.

i'm hoping that the weight loss will reduce the pain too so i won't need as many pills but only time will tell.
