Weight gain and not taking medication

Posted , 3 users are following.

I've been diagnosed earlier this week as having over active thyroid. After reading many of the posts here now in total panic. I've spent the last three years losing five stone. Now I'm on Carbimazole 20mg 3 times a day.

This probably sounds really stupid but the weight gain is a real issue for me (and probably most of you) if I didn't take the medication does anyone know what would happen? I daren't tell anyone that I've not taken any of the tablets yet and have cancelled my next blood test/follow up with my GP.

I'm normally a perfectly rational person who has several long term medical problems that I take medication for with no second thought but this has just completely made me panic.

Hey, i lost just over a stone in a matter of a few weeks. Its very important you take your pills. Having a over active thyroid increase the rate your body works at, therefore if it work faster you will loose weight. All i would say is keep a balanced diet and a good amount of excersice then you shouldnt put it back on and if you do it would be very gradual. Pretty much you can go from eating everything you want and not putting on weight to being a 'normal person' so considering what you would eat so like a person with out and overactive thyroid! Just take you pills trust me it will make you feel better!

Please take your medication. This is a serious illness that can lead to all sorts of complications if it is not controlled.

I have not put on any weight over the 4 months that I have been treated.

Ypur thyroid affects so much of your bodily systems. It needs to be brought under control.

    Best wishes

Hi, I agree with what has previously been said you need to take meds if not then you could die sorry to be so blunt but, you could end up having a thyroid storm & believe me that is not a nice experience. Without your thyroid function nothing else can function as it controls everything in your body. As for weight gain its not carbimazole that makes you gain weight its your thyroid getting better you should only gain what you previously lost. Please take meds they take around 6 weeks to kick in but, hopefully you will start to feel better before this. Take care Elaine.
