Weight gain and Prednisolone

Posted , 8 users are following.

hi i am about to start these steriods for a lung condition. i will start on 35g for 10 days then 30 for another 10days etc until i reach 10g, then possibly move to 5g and continue until my condition is better. i am so nervous about weight gain and moon face!

Maybe because my dose is quite low i wont have a problem or is this wishful thinking? I have battled with my weight for years and now it seems i have no choice. i am wondering if the tablets just increase your appetite or whether you gain weight regardless. Any comments/advice would be much appreciated.

Thank you

It is both really - some people eat loads more because they are permanently hungry (like my husband but he's so skinny and eats nothing that it is a decided benefit!) but pred changes the way your body processed carbs and also triggers random spikes of glucose to be released by the liver, in turn triggering production of too much insulin to bring the BS back down, it overshoots and makes you crave carbs to bring it back up. Rinse and repeat! Insulin is heavily implicated in weight gain - it encourages the body to lay down fat stores in particular places. Pred can also cause fluid retention - and that causes weight gain too.

You can help the fluid bit by restricting salt in your diet. The carb-related weight gain can be helped by cutting carbs in your diet drastically - especially "white" processed carbs: white flour, white rice, above all sugar, and limiting root vegetables and fruit as both are carb-rich and not too much wholemeal grain products. And it DOES work.

I think this is a good summary Eileen. I have been on prednisone for a number of years now and in spite of following a diet like yours, I am still gaining weight for no good reason. I've recently been told that I am gaining weight because I am old. I am 73. I can't do aerobic exercise because of disability so I feel rather stuck. I have been on 15mg daily but my doctor is now having me decrease slowly and I have just started that so wish me luck.

i have BRONCHIECTASIS and have been on high strength steroid inhalers and tablets when needed for many years. i did pile the weight on but gradually for a few years, but then decided to do something about it. it seems to me i did store fat and i do feel hungry through using steroids. I also have chocolate crazes every so often. unfortunately I need the steroids so i joined a slimming group. it worked for me but everyone is different. I cant diet as i enjoy quite substantial meals so I did Slimming World. I eat as many fruit, vegetables & protein to fill me up and lost 4 1/2 stone to reach a target i felt comfortable with. That was 2 years ago and Im still on target. Ive learnt to eat chocolate when the craze is on me but eat healthily the rest of the time. My skin has aged quicker than i have and was told by a nurse, when she had to dress what should have just been a simple graze but the skin was torn back, that it was due to taking Steroids, so moisturise regularly.

      hi Susan63174

that sounds like a really good idea! Not too sure how long I'll be on steriods for but I'm so nervous about taking them. i know how slimming world is you can eat loads of food so this could be a good diet to go on now. congrats on your weight loss, are you still taking steriods. thanks Sue

in a short time my skin has aged too. The craving for chocolate is over whelming. I am also on metotrexate. thought I would lose weight with that hasn't happened either.

I gained a kilo in a month with methotrexate! It seemed to cause a load of pred side effects I'd never suffered - including being hungry all the time! That was one of the factors in my decision to stop - in addition to aches as if the PMR wasn't controlled, hair loss in chunks and overwhelming fatigue!

my doc ordered folic acid for hair loss. I am not loosing hair now. I do have over whelming fatigue. Not sure if it's from the pmr or the mtx. the mtx has helped with the pmr.

I had folic acid - even at a much higher dose it didn't help the hair!

I stopped the mtx - that sorted the hair loss!!! Took a couple of months for all the mtx side-effects to go though.
