Weight Gain on Losartan!

Hi all, I am a 56 year old female who has always been on the slim side. Since taking Losartan (after awful side effects on Ramipril and

Amolopodine) I have found that I have put on a lot of weight. my GP warned me about swollen ankles but they didn't swell, my legs certainly have though. i have put on over 2 stones and am constantly hungry. My joints are extremely painful and my feet are very painful. I am waiting for a podiatrist appt to discover what can be done with my feet. I have been diagnosed with an aniexty disorder but wonder whether the Losartan are making that worse too. I'm beginning to feel really depressed and have been tempted to just ditch the Losartan altogether but am scared due to my high blood pressure. I would be very grateful to hear from anyone else who has experience similar side effects from Losartan. I take 50mg every evening. Thanks for your time

15/3/2020 Hi Wendy, Im a medically retired RN, BS from the US & was just prescribed Losartan (Cozaar) 2 weeks ago after having a BP reading of 194/90+! (due to being in extreme pain & under extreme stress from the pain!) I reported my BP reading to my PCP/GP over the phone, so we have not yet met to discuss my HTN or this med. My pharmacist (I believe you call them "chemists") instructed me to take Losartan at night right before bed because new studies have shown that blood pressure spikes very high on everyone right after waking up & remains high for a few hours until leveling off to normal. From my 30-year professional experience, there are SO many anti-HTN meds to choose from that surely your dr can find at least ONE from a list of close to 100 (!) that will both LOWER your blood pressure AND not cause you such misery-producing side effects. My best to you from "across the pond!"

Hi Wendy, I have been on Benicar for a year and a half. Benicar is in the same family as Losartan. Last week my doctor increased my Benicar to 40 mg. I can tell you while on Benicar I have gained about 12 pounds at least. Since last week when they increased my dosage I have gained 3 pounds! I can tell you that I am 60 years old and a very regimented eater. I rarely deviate from my diet. I am very discouraged as I was always very slim and watched my diet as heart disease runs in my family. I know I am in menopause, and I do have a desk job, but I can't believe the weight I have gained in a short amount of time. I do need to to start an exercise program of some sort, even just a brisk walk. I hope this helps that you are not alone.

On a side note, since they have increased my Benicar to 40mg, I feel lousy, and exhausted. My BP is still borderline as a friend of mine is a nurse and has been taking it pretty much everyday since they increased it. Hoping it starts to drop soon. I realize it's only been a little over a week.

Im 38 and i'm on 100mg Losartan i've been on Losartan for 2 years i put on 2 stone in the first 6 months and 4 stone by the end if the year. l've still not lost it and my cardiologist wasn't bothered as my BP had reduced and my valve had improved. But its very depressing going from a size 12 to a size 18.

50mg is a high dosage. The higher the dosage the greater the risk of side effects, perhaps you can ask your doctor to put you on a different variation of the drug.
