Weight Gain with Citalopram

Hi All!

Was curious if anyone has experienced quite a bit of weight gain on Cetalopram?  After taking Cit 40mg for 1.5 years, I noticed that I could not lose any weight that I had gained since taking the med.  I gained 25 pounds and my stomach looks like I am about 8 months pregnant.  I have never had a problem with wieght.

Thank you,

Chrissy

Hi, unfortunately it seems to be one of the side effects. I lost about a stone when my depression hit, since starting cit six months ago I've regained the lost weight and am now the heaviest I've ever been despite eating healthily and exercising more. I'm hoping when I come off the medication I can regulate my weight again

      Hi there!

I went to my physician on Thursday and she has put me on Wellbutrin, acutally it's called Bupropian HCI 300mg.  I do hope that with my already changed eating habits and excercising, weight loss!!!!

Hi chrissy I've put about half a stone in in 6 weeks but that might be with me stopping smoking I don't know....but I've noticed wen I take my cit on a morning an hour later I'm famished lol

      Hi Ethan,

Part of it could be that you no longer smoking or the Wellbutrin. Although, I had stopped smoking as well when I started the Citalopram.  I started smoking again very soon after the start of the med.  Just be careful and keep track of your weight.

      Take care,

      Ahh Chrissy!

Have they helped you in other ways? See I am thankful for them for helping me through the hard times I was going through so kinda glad I'm happy again and prefer happiness to worrying about weight! But I know what you mean tho I have days where I hate looking at my body but then which women doesn't?

      Take care

Yes I definately put weight on with this drug. Not horrendously but noticeably to me. I have been tapering off this drug for nearly 2 years and am now on a really low dose. I have lost weight the closer I am getting to zero!!!! I also don't crave as much junk food and sugar.

      Hi Recoverygirl,

That is awesome to hear!!!  I am so happy for you!

As we all know, the weight gain is pretty depressing!!  I have a full closet of clothes that I cannot wear.  My waist line - horrible.  I have always bee small, so it's really hard to be this big.

I do hope that your weight loss and feeling good continues and you only become even happier and happier each day! smile

      Take care,

      Chrissy
