weight loss

Hi, I'm new to this thread. Was diagnosed Osteoporosis Just after Christmas 2015. 3 vertebral fractures, but no results from my DEXA scan yet. Is it normal to lose weight with this disease? I've lost a stone since Christmas, in spite of eating normally - especially cheese. I'm currently taking the dreaded Alendronic Acid and if possible would love to stop using it. Your comments would be very helpful.

    Hi,

I fortunately have had no other problems apart from breaking a few bones in my feet. I was Aledronic and tolerated it very well. Sorry for your worry of loosing weight.

    Hello poemsgalore,

There are quite a few members in this and other discussions who either began with alendronic acid (AA) and gave up, or who refused and went straight on to the natural way to cure yourself.

I am one who started on AA at the beginning of November 2015 and after spending some time reading the posts on patient and also various books, I stopped after my 30th March 2016 pill and I'm making my own way with appropriate exercise, supplements and plenty of support from fellow osteoporosis sufferers and interested followers. There are many people who can and will answer most of your queries.

Unfortunately, I can't answer your fist query regarding your weight loss. With me it was the other way round because the AA pill caused massive water retention and I put on around 9 pounds over the five months that I was taking it. Most of that has now disappeared.

Most of us are happy to respond to posted queries or comments as well as private messages.

Welcome to the world of Osteoporosis and Alendronic Acid.

Why have you had no results yet? Is it because you just had the scan or you have not been told.

I would not take AA without knowing your tscores but I have refused to take it anyway with knowing my tscores which are not good.

I am guessing the AA may be to blame for your weight loss as far as I know there is no connection to osteoporosis.

I am not a doctor and everyone is entitled to choose their course of response to an osteoporosis diagnosis.

My main concern was with swallowing the pill. After reading online I have been relieved to find many others feel the same as I do.

I would take your concerns to a doctor because there are so many reasons for weigfht loss, and unexplained weight loss should be looked into.  Most causes are benign, but some can be very serious.  It's not listed as a side effect on webmd.

All I did was take a combination of Calcium-Magnesium-D3 Vitamin and Zinc and I reversed the ospeoporosis to osteopenia. To me your medication indicates that your bone density scan turned up positive.   Tell your doctor first about your desire to get away from the medication.  You 2 will be discussing your bone health.   I also take a joint complex which helps with pain because I also have compressed discs up and down my spine and I have arthritis is my lower back.

Pam, do you take them all at the same time?

People have been telling me not to take the magnesium with the calcium.

You did not mention zinc, do you take that?

Also, what foods do you have that help as well. I understand that prunes and avocados are good.

How long did it take you to reverse your osteoporosis?

Just read that magnesium is important because it converts inactive vitamin D to the active form.  Does that mean people with too high level of D shouldn't take magnesium either?

My doctor is not retesting me for D next time (in about two months).  But at next visit after that I'm going to insist on a decent discussion about the implications of sarcoidosis and the fact that people like me have to have that test, it's not just the "fashionable" thing to do.

There are several companies here in the United States that have calcium and magnesium together into one tablet. Zinc is for healing so that is good for you; So combining things together over is an asset to your body. We have to drink or eat too much of calcium and magnesium filled foods to get the best results, so supplementation is essential if you have osteoporosis or any other bone problem. Once I learned that, I was able to slowly wean myself off of the nasal spray I was taking for the osteoporosis. I cannot give you an exact amount of time it took to reverse it, but I was starting to have pain in my right hip and went to AN and go chronologist. I found it was not the osteoporosis, but after going through another bone density test I was told I was only osteopenic. The pain I was feeling was not from that. I wound up with another doctor and had my back x-rayed and learned I had arthritis in my lower back.

I've been waiting 4 weeks to have it confirmed that I only have 3 fractures. My first scan in 2013, after treatment for cancer. That result (Osteopenic) came through fairly quickly. I'm not too worried about losing weight. I was 12stone 8lbs, and 5 foot 2inches. I'm now 11stone 8lbs and 5ft and half an inch.

Can't exercise at the moment as even walking is painful, and I can't stand up straight without pain. But thanks for your comments.
