Weight gain is a common side effect. But in my case, the weight I gained was more likely to my inactivity due to my PHN and an injury. I did lose the old-fashioned way, more activity and fewer calories and after a few months I did drop 8 pounds.
I'm more concerned about the amount of gab you're on. I've learned a lot more about this drug in the last few months, I've been on it for 19 months, since shingles/PHN nerve damage. It is approved for only epilepsy, PHN and certain kinds of diabetic neuropathy, for all other uses it's off-label and has limited effectiveness. However, the side effects can be annoying to quite serious. There has also been new research showing it linked to long-term health problems including increased risk for dementia. If you can lower the dose and feel inclined to, I strongly recommend it. For the vast majority of people, problems with depression, mood swings, anger or numbness, dizziness, memory problems, processing and cognitive issues make them want to get off or at least reduce the med. I was at 2700 and am down to 1000 mg/day. I've seen a great improvement since then.
