Weight loss after Sertraline

Hi All

i am new to this forum and have joined because I am feeling very desperate.

I started taking 50mg of sertraline in the beginning of May this year and stopped taking cold turkey at the end of September (with doctors permission) so was on it for 5 months.

The reason I stopped taking it was the weight gain. I started piling on a few pounds over the summer but didn't put it down to the medication as I was eating and drinking more or less whatever I fancied. Then start of September I decided to have a bit of a detox so went on the 1200 calorie diet (done before and weight drops off), started excercising 3-4 times a week and really reduced my alcohol intake. 3 weeks into this (where I stuck to it religiously) I lost not a pound in fact the scale crept up. I was mortified and livid. Started googling and found that weight gain is very common with this medication so I stopped there and then. Went to see the doctor the next day to confirm it was ok and he said it was.

So ive been off sertraline now for 5 weeks and no weight loss at all despite dieting and exercising. I have been tested for diabetes, thyroid, liver, hormones. You name it I've been tested. All came back fine.

So my question is how long after stopping taking sertraline will my weight loss start to begin or will it not? My doctor has assured me it will however I'm not feeling at all confident seeing the scales not budging. I should add as well that none of my clothes are any loser nor has my shape improved so it's not the old 'muscle weighs heavier than fat" excuse for the weight on the scales.

    Hi

Sorry to hear your struggle with weight gain on sertraline. I am having the same problem with mirtazapine and tapering off it for same reason.

I must add I was on sertraline before this and never gained any weight in fact my doctor put me on mirtazapine to improve my apertite as I wasn't eating on them.

I guess it has diffrent affects on diffrent people.

The side affect of mertazapine however is weight gain and boy was that true, I gained 8lb in three weeks of taking them.👎👎

    Hi Desperate,

OMG...I am here.. right next to you...the lightbulb went on as I read...since my Zoloft went from 50 mg per day to 100 mg per day I have gained at least thirty pounds!

Thank you for sharing. tomorrow I reduce my dose. Thonk I will wait a week before consciously attempting to reduce.

    Wanna work on it together?

    kind regards

    I found this online...

Experts say that for up to 25% of people, most antidepressant medications -- including the popular SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor) drugs like

Lexapro , Paxil , Prozac, and Zoloft -- can cause a weight gain of 10 pounds or more.

"This is a phenomenon that I first noticed years ago when Prozac first came on the market. It didn't initially show up in the clinical trials because most of them were eight to 12 weeks in length, and the weight gain generally occurs with longer use. But it's definitely one of the side effects of this and other antidepressant medications," says Norman Sussman, MD, a psychiatrist and associate dean for postgraduate medical programs at the NYU School of Medicine.

Ladies, we gotta stick tigether and help each other get the poundage off.

    We will succeed!

    Hi there,

It's unfortunate that after taking these kind of pill the people who tend to gain weight life becomes a never ending battle with the scale. 7 years ago I was an average weight person 145-150 pounds/5.6". I had panic attacks and ended up in the emergency room or night. That's when they referred me to a therapist to deal with my anxiety. The therapist suggested that if I want to have it under control I need to take medication for a while to stop it. Didn't mention the possible weight problems that may arise. I started with Lexapro and gained about 5 pound a month. 4 months later I told to the doctor that I never gained weight so fast besides I didn't think the med worked, so he changed it to Cymbalta. Another 4 months goes by and I am weighing the highest ever by gaining all together about 40 pounds. I stopped taking it , tapered it down and I was ok. No anxiety and was working out with s trainer for 3 months under strict diet provided by him. I didn't loose one pound. All had changed I got wilder shoulders and back. 5 months passed by since I stoped meds and my anxiety showed up and slowly became a nightmare where I needed to get back on med again. I discussed it with my therapist and he suggested we try Zoloft since that had the least amount of side effects. I still kept gaining weight. At a point where I was so desperate to loose weight and I had a family dr visit, she /dr- was in her '60's and explained ed to me that with this kind of medication most people gain weight. Some gain 5 pounds , some 50. She prescribed to me a med for weight loss that I could take together with Zoloft and without diet and exercise within 8 months I lost 50 pounds. I kept it off for about 3 years. I started gaining again and I desperately run to my weight loss med, that unfortunately second time around didn't help. Probably my body got used to it. Anyway, I am still on Zoloft, I am afraid to quit, I don't want to experience anxiety/depression again. Now I am weighing 220 pounds and wandering what option got left for me to loose weight? Diet and exercise is not a solution. Btw the diet pill was- Diethylpropion and the dose 75mg once a day.

I have used a combination of Wellbutrin and Sertraline. The first is known to have a stimulant similar to a cup of coffee and the Sertraline yes known to cause weight gain. Given the combo of one known for weight loss and the other for weight gain, I havent had a problem. I don't know how long it will last but I'm guessing that given any weight gain I'd ask for an increase in Wellbutrin.

I have been on sertraline for 18 months now, started at 50mg and increased to 150mg. There was an increase in appetite, mainly craving for carbs and sugar. For the first 8-9 months I didn't notice any weight gain. In fact, I had more energy and was working out so I was able to lose a bit. From month 8 onwards things changed, I maintained apettite and training, however I started to put on the kilos. Luckily I am in the process of weaning myself off sertraline, not being cause of the weight gain but because its helped me to feel better. I will be on 25mg for the next 2-3 weeks and I really hope to lose the weight I out on.

Hang in there, improving your mental health is the most important thing. The weight wain is temporary!

    hiya,

i truly know how you feel. since starting sertraline in 2019 i have gone from 70kg to 128kg

for someone who has an eating disorder and body dysmorphia its been really tough to see this weight creep on and not come off no matter how much diet or exercise i did.

i started on 2.5mg sertraline and ended up on 200mg - not only has it made me gain a lot of weight it also made my mental health worse .

i mention both of these to my GP as well as the pharmacist but they took no interest.

its only since the sleep apnea staff told me that sertraline can cause weight gain that i decided enough was enough and have stopped my antidepressants around 5 days ago. i'm feeling a lot less bloated. suffering with withdrawal side effects with an upset tummy but im glad to have made a start.,

i will keep you updated - hope to see some improvement soon, starting slimfast tomorrow.

its my sisters wedding in july and my suit doesn't fit me at the moment.

    wish me luck lol

I have been on Zoloft for five years, 100 mg grams per day. I quit cold turkey; I would not recommend. I had gained about 26 pounds after increasing from 50 to 100 mg. I have been off of Zoloft for a little over two weeks and I’m down 15 pounds. My appetite it’s pretty much gone . I am hoping my appetite will resume at some point.

    Hi,

Just wondered how you got on as I am tapering off 1/2 a tablet every day for the last 2 weeks but nothing, seems gaining it instead!! I will be down to 1/2 tablet every other day for two weeks before coming off completely.

I was hoping my 10lb weight gain would go!!
